I had the same problem. It turned out to be with the NSI prop control.
The set screws in the motor had backed out, and the wires exposed. Check
for anything that could be shorting to ground.

Anyone ever have a "rotax" tack work one moment then go Eractic the next?
Appears to be grounding issue, but prior owner said he tracked down
      ground,
      replace tack and sender...

Here is an important point I thought I would share for those using the above
set up. First with your engine off your sink rate will be increased
significantly. I know, you say you knew that already. Well we all probably
knew it but doing it is a major revelation. Also, elevator input will be
less as well. Secondly, the freewheeling prop adds significant drag and
increased sink rate when not creating thrust. Might I suggest everyone at
least experience the effect over a long runway before you are taken by
surprise during an engine out situation. I believe there needs to be some
type of device to stop the rotation of the blades in the event of a
committed need to have maximum glide.

On the other hand the freewheeling redrive as on my 582 allows me to
practice engine out landings without shutting down the engine. Of
course in this engine the freewheeling is a result of a clutch that
disengages at 2500 engine rpms. While it may result in a decreased
glide ratio it allows me to know exactly how the airplane will behave if
I really do lose the engine. I may not glide as far but I know how it
will behave and I can practice as often as I want.

I have a model II with a clutch.

The advantages outweigh the disadvantages by far.

Flying it - Just pull the throttle back to idle and every descent is practice for
an engine out. Very do-able even at gross weight. I have practiced repeatedly
with the engine at idle and with the mags off. With mags off, I aim to begin
my flare about 1/3 of the distance down the runway so I won't be short. It
performs exactly the same EXCEPT that it gets too quiet when I have those mags
      off!!

Biggest disadvantage - I can't prop it. That makes me maintain my battery in top
      condition.

New to this list, lot of good info. I'm looking to purchase a Series V
project and I want to install a cont. 0200. Is there anyone on the list that
may have some info on the performance of that combination? Also is Skystar
      closed?
Unable to get a response on kit prices. Unable to bring up pricing on their

      I'm including here a link for a O200 powered KF V for
sale. If you contact the owner Ricky Simmons, he may
answer your questions. You may even want to do a
      deal. The price sounds right!

gross weight to1320. Sport Pilot weight. Thanks for the reply. Later Neil

      Neil:

I really like that plane. The only reason I don't buy
it is because the gross weight exceeds 1320 pounds. I
want to keep the option to fly without a medical. I
understand that, if you are certifying a model V, you
can limit the gross weight to 1320 pounds, and make it
      a sport plane.

But if you limit GW to 1320, and you throw in an 0-200 as well, you're
really killing your useful load...Is it worth it?

I have a BMW thermostat plumbed in to mine and it works great. I put the
radiator inside the cowling and with careful baffling, it keeps the engine
cool. With this setup, it is imperative to have an oil cooler since a lot
of the air going through the radiator goes by the muffler first.

      Mike,

When I was running an EA 81 I was able to put a Ford Escort t-stat into
one of the hoses and put a hose clamp on each side to keep it in place.
This had been used by someone else on this list and it worked for me.
      Just a thought. fwiw. Norm

      Hi ! Paul,
I'm not sure if this is relavent to you but it may be of
interest. I have a MKIV with a Maule SFSA tailwheel. This is the hard solid
wheel. Now it was always twitchy and hard to taxi straight let alone
take-offs and landings. I thought it was me, however as it was also very
noisy I eventually substituted just the wheel itself for a Homebuilders 6"
special from Aircraft Spruce. This is a soft rubber wheel. I've never been
so happy in all my life. The thing runs very much quieter and I can taxi as
straight as a die. Take-offs and landings are vastly easier. I put this down
to the fact the new wheel is soft rubber and is not bouncing as much also
not being flat I think it is getting some directional control rather than
      sliding across the ground surface.
Hope something here helps you sort things,
                                                                         Rex.

Yes you are losing a couple hundred pounds of useful load, but 95% of are
flying is alone,so you can carry what you need. The only time your over your
Sport pilot GW is when you have a passenger with full fuel, your now not
legal but the airplane is safe to fly just not legal and only if you get
caught. You can increase the gross at a later time but you can't go back to
SP 1320 GW should you want to change it back. Later Neil

      Hi ! Paul,
I'm not sure if this is relavent to you but it may be of
Hope something here helps you sort things,
                                                                         Rex.

When you have 115 acres on a dead end road, 50 feet from a river, with a 2500'
      grass strip, a hangar
in your house with two airplanes, and no wife, life is really good.

When you have an apartment at the back of the hangar next to your house, you
are always picking fights with your wife in hopes of being kicked out to the
        doghouse.

Wow you are a lucky man...a 3200 sq ft hangar with an apartment.
Please come tell my wife that is what we need to do.

I talked to them last week regarding tracing the third package of three.
They were on the ball, but UPS lost the third package in roseburg oregon 70
miles from me. I could have bought my poly-fibre from acs, but feel Skystar
needs the business more. Hangin in there... Ron NB Ore

When you have 115 acres on a dead end road, 50 feet from a river, with a
      2500' grass strip, a hangar
in your house with two airplanes, and no wife, life is really good.

When you have an apartment at the back of the hangar next to your house,
      you
are always picking fights with your wife in hopes of being kicked out to
      the
        doghouse.

Wow you are a lucky man...a 3200 sq ft hangar with an apartment.
Please come tell my wife that is what we need to do.

BTW, are you at Elm Creek?
