HI Guys, Im experiencing some erroneous readings on my electric prop digital readout
and was wondering if anyone else with a CAP system has experienced the same.
When adjusting pitch the display is all over the paddock and I have to take
my finger of the switch to stabilise the readout so I can see where I'm at
with the setting. I have used a scotch bright pad to clean up the area where the
brushes contact and it appears to help some what but the problem quickly returns.
      Does anyone have any ideas?

      Cheers

      Graeme,

Might check and clean the cannon plug connector contacts on the firewall. I
would use some type of non residue cleaner on the disc contacts. Pull the
brushes to make sure one of them are not cracked or sticking. See if your
run out is good on the disc. All connections tight on the control box wires?
It could be the gage, doubt it but the switch it self may be the culprit.
The last thing I would check is the drive motor leads and its mounting.
      Isn't chasing gremlins fun.

      Rick

      Randy,
I don't know anything about the penalties, but how would over gross be
discovered on a ramp check? Just think of the length the FAA would have to
go through to find out. They would have to bring in scales, guys to help get
the plane on scales, etc. Most of the time, a ramp check is to find out if
you, the pilot and the plane has the proper documents and equipment. It is
not really for determining airworthiness, especially for experimental like
      the Kitfox.

      Group

I've been a lurker on the Kitfox list for the past 2 years while finishing
my 5 year build on my Classic IV. I've read and enjoyed every post and
learned a lot of things. I made changes in my construction based on things
I read on the list. I feel like I know some of the people on the list from reading
their adventures. On May the 19th I moved my beauty out to the local grass
strip and let the MD-RA inspector (Canada) I was ready for my final inspection.
A weak later I had passed the inspection and was waiting for my flight
permit which arrived shortly. In the meantime I thought it would be a simple
formality to re-certify my private license and started along that route. I've
had a license since 1974 but haven't been current for many years. I used to own
a Jodel D-11 and had put many wonderful hours on it. The transport Canada
medical guys made me jump through all the hoops including a cardiac stress test
and ultimately a cardiac stress with a radioactive tracer in my bloodstream
and subsequent before and after gamma ray photos of my heart. When they couldn't
find anything wrong they finally had to give me back my license. It all took
about three months. I used the time wisely to test and tweak and ground run
my fox with an EA81. Taxi testing went very well and I was anxious to fly.
After doing a flight review and about three hours of taildragger dual time in
a Merlin I felt ready for my maiden flight.

August 26 around Calgary was a beautiful morning with clear sunny skies
and the Rockies off in the distance. I went for another check ride in the
Merlin and decided I was ready. My wife came out to witness and photo the event.
Take off was beautiful, climbout reasonable, and cruise reasonable. I
wasn't pushing anything to hard, just verifying numbers and feel. I did one circuit
and with everything running in the green did a flyby and went around for
another. The landing after the second circuit was one of the most satisfying
landings I ever did even with that little skip. I taxied back, shut down and
was congratulated by good airport friends and my wife. I checked out the aircraft
from nose to tail and found nothing amiss. After fueling up I had to get
more of that Kitfox joy and headed out again. New to the new aircraft I was
gingerly exploring the flight characteristics and performance of my new pride
and joy for three more circuits. When my wife hadn't returned with my son after
the third touch and go I thought I do a fourth and come in for a full stop.
Circuits are flown at our little strip at 500 ' AGL to remain well clear of
the control zone above us. To my great surprise and dismay my Subaru stopped
suddenly on the downwind. Too far from the airport to glide in (mistake) and
only at 500 feet (mistake) I didn't have much time. A quick attempt at a restart
was negative and awkward, left hand -key switch, right hand -throttle, knees
holding the stick and trying to maintain safe glide speed. I opted for a
hayfield (turf) to my right because all the cropped fields were soggy with the
torrential rains we had all year. On coming out of the turn I found myself a
little high and a little hot and a barbed wire fence running across my landing
path. I pulled on full flaps with a left wing low attitude close to the ground.
I had just read "So You Want To Fly A Kitfox" a half dozen times in the
past few days and knew that full flaps would reduce aileron effectiveness but
      by the tim!
       e I real
ized I had no aileron response it was too late. The left wingtip impacted first,
bounced up and then airborne and flying almost sideways the right wing and
gear hit next driving the front spar tube 3 feet into the sod and snapping it
off. The rear tube also 3 feet in was badly bent. The right Grove gear leg was
driven up under the fuselage. and caved in the fuselage under my butt. One
blade of the Ivo was bent up under the cowling and the hand crafted (200 hrs)
cowling was cracked and broken. The doors popped open and all loose items flew
out the right door. I saw a few stars but quickly got my belt off and was out
of the cabin with no injuries. No fuel leaks after the impact but rad was
      broken with fluid running out.

Three days later back at the airport I took the prop off and attempted
a start. After a few backfires from mistakenly loading the manifold up with
fuel the engine fired and ran well. I only ran it for a short time because
of no coolant. I salvaged the fuel tank, lift struts, wingtip and lights from
the right wing but the rest was too beat up to do much with. I have the plane
back home now and will soon start the cut and replace in the fuselage. Grove
can rebend and heat treat the gear to new specs. I need three outboard ribs
for the left wing. The engine starts and runs well now. I have no Idea why
it quit in flight but I am still looking.

It was amazing to me that a thread ran on in the list for about a month
after my accident about not extending full flaps lest you lose aileron effectiveness.
I will definitely be putting a stop in the flap system during the
rebuild. I need a right wing and three outboard ribs for the left wing that
may be difficult to get now that Skystar has declared bankruptcy but I am talking
to others and getting good leads. I hope to be back flying by next summer.

On August 26th I got to be a test pilot in a beautiful, well behaved
comfortable aircraft that I built lovingly over 5 years. The ecstasy of the
first flight will stay with me forever. I had an accident that day that could
easily have taken my life or seriously injured me but I walked away unscathed
thanks to skill or luck or some other reason and for that, August 26th was the
      best day of my life.

Are you planning on flying in an airshow? The only ramp checks I have ever seen

repair any defects before flying. Anybody else ever seen a ramp check?

      Tim,
How long were you flying when that happened? If it was approximately 20
minutes I can tell you what happened to me. I was downwind after doing what
you did and a fuel low light came on. I landed and the light went out. What
I found out was I didn't have my fuel lines running exactly right. When I
landed and the tail came down the header filled back up when I was in a
three point attitude. Re-routed running downhill and have never had the
poblem again. Jeff Classic IV Ohio

that little skip. I taxied back, shut down and was congratulated by good
airport friends and my wife. I checked out the aircraft from nose to tail
and found nothing amiss. After fueling up I had to get more of that Kitfox
joy and headed out again. New to the new aircraft I was gingerly exploring
the flight characteristics and performance of my new pride and joy for
three more circuits. When my wife hadn!
      > 't returned with my son after the third touch and go I thought I do a
fourth and come in for a full stop. Circuits are flown at our little strip
at 500 ' AGL to remain well clear of the control zone above us. To my
great surprise and dismay my Subaru stopped suddenly on the downwind. Too
far from the airport to glide in (mistake) and only at 500 feet (mistake) I
didn't have much time. A quick attempt at a restart was negative and
awkward, left hand -key switch, right hand -throttle, knees holding the
stick and trying to maintain safe glide speed. I opted for a hayfield
(turf) to my right because all the cropped fields were soggy with the
torrential rains we had all year. On coming out of the turn I found myself
a little high and a little hot and a barbed wire fence running across my
landing path. I pulled on full flaps with a left wing low attitude close
to the ground. I had just read "So You Want To Fly A Kitfox" a half dozen
times in the past few days and knew tha!

      > ized I had no aileron response it was too late. The left wingtip
impacted first, bounced up and then airborne and flying almost sideways the
right wing and gear hit next driving the front spar tube 3 feet into the
sod and snapping it off. The rear tube also 3 feet in was badly bent. The
right Grove gear leg was driven up under the fuselage. and caved in the
fuselage under my butt. One blade of the Ivo was bent up under the cowling
and the hand crafted (200 hrs) cowling was cracked and broken. The doors
popped open and all loose items flew out the right door. I saw a few stars
but quickly got my belt off and was out of the cabin with no injuries. No
fuel leaks after the impact but rad was broken with fluid running out.
      >
      > Three days later back at the airport I took the prop off and
attempted a start. After a few backfires from mistakenly loading the
manifold up with fuel the engine fired and ran well. I only ran it for a
short time because of no coolant. I salvaged the fuel tank, lift struts,
wingtip and lights from the right wing but the rest was too beat up to do
much with. I have the plane back home now and will soon start the cut and
replace in the fuselage. Grove can rebend and heat treat the gear to new
specs. I need three outboard ribs for the left wing. The engine starts
and runs well now. I have no Idea why it quit in flight but I am still
      looking.
      >
      > It was amazing to me that a thread ran on in the list for
about a month after my accident about not extending full flaps lest you
lose aileron effectiveness. I will definitely be putting a stop in the
flap system during the rebuild. I need a right wing and three outboard
ribs for the left wing that may be difficult to get now that Skystar has
declared bankruptcy but I am talking to others and getting good leads. I
hope to be back flying by next summer.

walked away unscathed thanks to skill or luck or some other reason and for

No Tim, it was the best day of your life, so far! The real best day is to come.
The day your repaired aircraft will fly again and you'll head west toward Banff

      Graeme,
Our CAP140 blade angle gage is also inoperative.
It had been just flashing wildly different numbers, but after a recent
"reset", it has been displaying only "52". Haven't had time to mess with
sorting it out, but rumor has it that a new chip may be required in the
      'black box'.
If we get around to sorting it out, I'll post the results. Please do the
      same.

      Jeff
I don't think it was a fuel problem for a couple of reasons. 1) I had
installed a low fuel warning system in the header tank after reading about
long shallow descents in the list and the chance that the fuel would all be
in the forward areas of the wing tanks, not over the pickup at the rear of
the tanks. I didn't notice the low fuel warning light come on in the middle
of my panel. 2) The engine quit without a cough or a sputter which I would
have expected with a fuel issue. In fact in my mind I can remember the
instant the prop stopped in front of my face and my first thought was that
the ignition failed. Thanks for your input Jeff, I certainly will pay
attention to fuel line routing when I put it all back together again.
By the way my ignition system is the Leburg system from England. I
installed it as a single system. I checked the ground to the system and it
is solid. The plane starts and runs well in my garage now. I had 50 hours
of ground running on the engine before my first flight. I also am running
the Aerocarb from the Sonex guys with a main and auxiliary fuel pump. I
found it difficult to set up but once set up it runs well and is very
      simple.

I am back on the list. Not quite as big a move as
from Alaska to Texas, but I am near completion of my
      move from KY to FL.

If WX allows, I expect to be flying My S-5 from KY to
FL between Wed and Friday this coming week. (Nov
2-4)Route of flight is probably down V-51 with the
first fuel stop at AJR, Habersham Co, Georgia.

I need a mogas fuel stop somewhere in S.E. Georgia to
northen most FL. Anybody know of a good mogas stop in
the area? Bacon Co GA is just about the right
distance, but they don't list mogas.

I would strongly recommend NOT REMOVING those gear attach brackets. One day
you (or a new owner?) might want to install floats, or skis as you
suggested. The little bit of weight and drag you will lose by removing
those brackets would probably not even be measurable. Plus, should you ever
decide to sell you airplane, it could kill the deal if it was someone like
me that would want to use the Kitfoxes extraordinary ability to handle any
kind of gear (floats, skis, or either kind of landing gear system, bungees
or spring). A fox without the brackets would have no value to me as it
would be limited to just a spring landing gear. No options for anything
      else.

      Just my advice...

flew. I can not offer any thoughts on the power outage other than the usual
carb ice, or in the case of several soob powered planes, electrical
      failures.
I will be running a tempermental VW on my Kitfox IV and expect to at least
foul an occasional plug. It will take hours before I trust it to fly over
unlandable terrain. It is the point of no return on the runway that is a
danger to me. Glad to hear of your survival and the enthusiasm to try
      again.

Good to hear from you. I had begun to think you'd been blown away by one of

Welcome back Kurt! I have learned a lot from your posts.

I know that there are at least two web sites that list airports with Mogas
or auto-gas, but I can't find them in my favorites list.

      Hi everybody!

Thanks all! Somehow the other comments were more reassuring than Jeff's.

I have been looking for an opportunity to take advantage of the PACE
program. I think all my paper work is correct, but...

Randy -- way under gross most of the time - and always within CG range!

They only do the weight, balance and CG computations after the crash. Jeff
