Hi Kurt,
The Kitten has a 5 gallon tank that sits just behind the firewall. I
installed the gascollator because there was no 'low point' for a fuel drain. (I
bought
the J3 used)
I also replaced the aluminum firewall with a stainless steel one.
Incidentally, the Kitten has a 4130 Chromolly fuselage and wooden wings.
My Kitfox has it's header tank (and drain) behind the seats. I will not
install a gascollator since this tank is already providing that function.
I must say that this particular thread was very interesting indeed,
especially with your account of the failure and quick reaction. Thanks.

An interesting thing on cooling. I visited a Lancair IV pilot for some
ideas along with the owner of the IV I am working on and he made an
interesting comment on cooling. He has a later cowl with smaller inlets.
He extended the inner lip of the cowl about two inches, flaring it laterally
to create a reverse venteury effect and said that the resultant reduction in
air velocity gives him the same cooling as the larger inlets in the
conventional cowl.
Whether this would help at our speeds is a question yet to be answered.

Do you have the old ones? If not, real simple. Just cut a cone out of paper
and fold and wrap to your desired shape. You could either sew or velcrow
them to the cover boards.

There are no old ones. If there were I would just copy them. The problem I
see with the cone idea is that the stick does not come of the hole
perpendicular to it. I played around a bit with some paper and it seems each
side of the boot needs to be a different size and shape than the others.
I was just hoping someone had come up with a refined template to optimize
the shape of the boot.
