Hi Brent
I fly a model III with a rotax 912. It is off the runway in as LITTLE as 75 feet.
Landing is more difficult. It can land as short as 300 feet. But after 700
hours I am not 100% always able to land within 500 feet. Any float at all eats
up a lot of a 450 foot runway real quick. The good news is that if I can get
in it will be possible to get out. I can be off the ground with two people and
an 8 mph tail wind in 300 feet. But a 300 foot landing distance only leaves 150
feet of over run.

Hi,
I'm new to the list and I am looking to aquire a kitfox in the near
future (January). I am really interested in the STOL capabilities as I
would love to be able to operate out of my house. I have 520' of very
flat ground with basically no obstacles on one end (one way in-one way
out). Is this just too short for a light kitfox I,II, or III? And are
those the best STOL models in the lineup? I am in central OH at
around 700'MSL and I weight 160lbs.
Also, I have roughly 500hrs in tailwheels and have 6000+hrs across 40+
aircraft types (corporate jets to ultralights).
Thanks in advance,
Brent

I recently noticed that the middle hinge on the rudder of my KFIV has a
fair bit of play in it. If you grab the top of the rudder, and pull it
side to side, you can see and hear the movement from the middle hinge. I
was going to fix this up with a bushing..but then I got to thinking that
it might be there by design, so if the rudder flexes, the middle hinge
does not bind. That is a long shot..but I thought I would ask the list.

Hi, all.
I am attempting to finish a kitfox iv-1200 that I've
been working on slowly for the last 12 years. All
covered now, engine mounted, instruments purchased and
really only lacking the electrical system. My lack of
engineering background meant frequent calls to both
Skystar and NSI (also now gone) for explanations and
advice. I'm debating now whether or not it is
feasable for me to finish the project with my limited
construction skills and the lack of support for the
electric prop (also NSI), engine, and airplane, but
I'm pressing on until that decision becomes clear one
way or the other.
My current problem is the counter balance weights. I
damaged the old flaperons while transporting the plane
on a trailer. I ordered a retrofit kit from Skystar a
few months back as they explained that the design had
changed and I couldn't just get a replacement right
flaperon. The instructions called for me to use my
old counter balance weights, but it seems to me that
the design of the counter balance weights must have
changed since my airplane shipped in '93. My airplane
used only 2 counter balance wights and the directions
in the retrofit call for 4.
So... I'm trying to aquire 4 counter balance weights
or I guess have to have them machined somehow. I
can't find any specs on the weights themselves. My
old ones weight 2lbs 8 oz each, but I don't know if
the new ones would be the same size or weight?
The good news is that I might have a perfectly good
left flaperon of '93 design available soon if someone
needs one.
Any one have any thoughts?
Thanks
Eric

I think most folks on the list know I am parting out the model 5 that I
have. Its getting down to questions of will this and that work on a model 4
or model 3. Is there someone who know what airframe parts will cross over to
which models. FYI the engine is still listed on EBay. The CAP and digital
prop soon unless someone makes me an offer. If you need a vacuum conversion
for your EA-81 I have that as well. I will up date the list I sent out soon.

Eric,
The retrofit plans called for 4 Mass Balance weights simply because there
are two on each flaperon. You need two for each flaperon - hence the 4 Mass
Balance weights needed for a retrofit kit. You should be able to reuse your
old weights without any problems. You will, of course, need to get 'em off
your old flaperon. That's going to be the toughest part. Use a heat gun
(be careful!) to soften the structural adhesive used to affix them to the
flaperon after first drilling out the rivets. They should come right off.
I have a set of the new ones that I could weigh & measure if you would like.
They basically are hollow and filled with lead to create the necessary
weight.

Sam,
I did the same thing a few years ago. I had to take the fuselage back
to Skystar to have the bungee truss replaced. While there I talked with
the engineer about salvaging the wing parts. All the wing parts that
are not damaged are reusable. The ribs can be removed with a heat gun
to soften the adhesive. Use a screwdriver to test it while heating. It
will soften with the heat and can be scraped off.
Mark the parts before you remove them. The flapperon brackets must go
back onto the same location on the same rib they came off, if reusing
that rib.

Have not been able to get Lockwood to respond. Would appreciate
any ideas from the list as to where I might get such a part as
described below.
Thanks

Hello
I have an older Rotax 912 UL (serial #4005270) and need a fitting
to the oil pump as follows:
1. 12MM to go into the oil pump and 1/2" NPT on the other side of
the fitting.
OR
2. 90 degree fitting with 12 MM to go into the oil pump and a hose
barb fitting on the other side of the 90 degree fitting.
Hope you can help me.
Thank you.

Hi Jimmie,
I'm basically a lurker, but I am just getting into the installation of
my IO240 on a Series 7, and I was pointed in the direction of the
Aeroquip company, by a good friend, and their products. I am
essentially a novice, but they can help you out in much of this type of
situation.
You can find a local dealer for your area by doing a search for Aeroquip.
Good luck,
Jim Gilliatt

Only that my K-IV 1200 circa '93 uses 2 balance weights, one on each
flaperon outboard end. My problem is that my weights don't balance the
flaperon, as they should.

K-IV 1200 / 582 / 99.9% done, thanks mostly to Bob Ducar.

Guy,
I don't understand what you said in your post. I have the two balance
weights and have had no problems with them over 750 hours. What do you mean
by not balancing as they should.
