Just a quick note. Gotta go to S. America soon.
Have your tried a level slip to control speed with
full throttle? You can also do tight turns (60
degrees AOB) pulling some "G's" to decend if necesary.
That bleeds speed off pretty good and the engine can
keep going. But climbing first, if you aren't near a
place to land, is the best first step. That gives you
minutes to think right away before any other actions.
Spring loaded to full throttle is better than going to
idle if the cable breaks. :-)
Old airplanes didn't have a throttle. They just
"blipped" the ignition off and on to control the
engine. Those were low compression engines though.
Doing that at full throttle might blow the heads off a
modern engine.
Haven't got the time to think thru it all right now,
but I think you could:
1. Don't Panic! You don't die at VNE. It is just
more risky to exceed it.
2. Climb. Open the doors for drag, if it is warm.
3. Navigate if you can. Check your fuel to see how
much time you have before it is a real problem.
4. Communicate
5. Slip to level off?
6. Tight turns over the field to descend.
7. Remember, as long as you have fuel and daylight,
don't hurry it.
8. Long runways are nicer if you have a choice. You
can kill the ignition and slow down right above the
runway to land nicely anywhere on it.
If you check your fuel and see that you have plenty,
then take the time to come up with more ideas to
control speed and try them in flight. Everything is
working. You just can't slow down.

access to a firewall forward construction manual for a Model 7 configured

rotax 912ULS? I have the complete firewall forward parts for the rotax
engine. Anyone close to my neighborhood (Minnesota) with a manual? This was
one of the items I lost in the bankruptcy deal. I have the main construction
manual, but am missing the part for the firewall forward. I am sure that was
supposed to come with the engine. Didn't get the engine I purchased so
didn't get the manual either.

Two routes you can take...place shutoff valves at each tank outlet, or get
one-way check valves and place them in-line. I understand PCV valves are
good for this, and can be replaced at condition (annual) inspection easily
and cheaply.

Might check to see how level your parking area is. Then if you install at
least one fuel shutoff to the header tank, it wont transfer. Also make
filling easier. Be sure and put a remove before flight flag on the shut off
valve. Worked for me.

Hi guys, I have done a search of the archieves for an answer to this
question but have been unsuccessful. My right wing tanks fills from my left
leaving more in the right than the left. This creates a problem when folding
the wing because it vents very quickly all over my beautiful new plane. Is
there any way that the tanks can compensate equally when running through a
gascolator so I dont have to drain excess fuel before folding the wings. I
have found that 20Liters left per side is OK but when it all drains across I
end up with 40 in one and very little in the other. The paint work has
already been affected by this happening twice.

Many years ago in the infancy of aviation most engines ran at full throttle
all the time. The speed of the engine was controlled by turning the mags
off and on to regulate the engine rpm. In actual footage in early movies
you can hear the engine sputtering as the mags are modulated. ( I am
assuming most engines had two mags)
I am not suggesting this will work well without causing damage to the
engine but in an emergency one does what one must to save the bacon.

Skystar's assets, which include intellectual property such as its manuals, "belong"
to the bankruptcy estate, now under control of the Bankruptcy trustee. Theoretically,
there could be a question of copywrite infringement by publishing
these manuals w/o permission. As a practical matter, I doubt anyone will do anything
about it but the risk is there.

Tom, I haven't seen 9460 in the Aircraft Spruce (or Wicks) catalog.
Both carry a similar product, Hysol 9430. John McBean carries 9460
(you're the man, John!). I've only used 9460 myself, since it came
with my kit, and I am completely satisfied with it.
9430 and 9460 are quite similar, they both have a 40 minute pot
life, they are both "high performance."
The differences- 9430 has better shear and peel strength, 9430 is
mixed 4:1, 9460 is 1:1 (volume or weight), and 9430 is thicker
(before it cures, obviously).
So which is better? That depends.
Some glue realities: bond strength is usually limited by surface
preparation and the materials being bonded. With either of these
the wood will breaks before the glue. Bond strength in wood depends
on the glue's ability to penetrate the surface. Although 9430 is
stronger, but 9460 may be more effective for wood since it is
thinner (can get into wood grain better), don't hold me to this.
I think since 9460 is mixed 1:1 is much easier to mix accurately,
especially if you get it in a double syringe. Since the components
have the consistency of toothpaste, you can't exactly pour them into
a measuring cup, instead you make two globs that are exactly the
same size (as opposed to one glob exactly four times the size of
another glob).
By the way, the numbers I found for T-88 show it's strength to be
about the same as 9430. Again, I've never used either, just
throwing out another data point.

Not too bad, I'll add a couple.
On 2) Climb- consider climbing at best rate airspeed until you are
within glide distance of a suitable landing site.
2.5) (?) Clean- retract the flaps. (A good idea with any engine
problem because it will help the climb rate and extend the glide
distance if the engine does fail.)
5) Tighten the straps (just in case).
6) If/when you secure the engine, remember to turn off the fuel
valve and aux pump (just in case).
I agree with your remark about emergency situations and the brain
getting soft. Human factors are sometimes a wildcard.

Those iginitions (Electromotive) are pretty much bullet proof, however there
have been some rare failures. Have him throw a new set of spark plugs in
before he does anything else. A bad plug can start and run fine, but start
missing under heavy load such as takeoff power.
Finding a pickup might be a challenge.

The ignition system is made in Northern Virginia. I believe it's an
Electromotive ignition. Don't tell 'em it's for an airplane - say it's for
a race car, boat, air boat, or whatever. If you can describe the pickup to
them, they may be able to provide some help. Electromotive is still in
business - unlike NSI (arrgh..I have one too -- I'm a little worried about
parts availability myself)
Next best option would be to try a speed shop. You would most likely have
to show them the original pickup so they could match it up.

I don't know if it's true or not, but one of the members on the Yahoo Subaru group
said that NSI was being reorganized, and would be known as Maxwell Propulsion
Systems beginning about the first of the year. No hits, however, when I googled
the name. I, for one, hope it's true, and that they'll provide better
service than NSI.

I don't know why. In early WW I the aircraft were full throttle all the
time and power was controlled by turning the ignition on and off. Why
couldn't you do the same?

Not sure how the other engines are configured, but the Rotax engines use
what I think are called bugnuts - the screw in devices that hold the cables
to the carburetor arm. With these things you can easily change out the
cables at annual in five minutes or so - mine takes about three feet of
1/16" cable available at the local hardware store. An extremely unlikely
chance of cable breakage in a years time and a really good check of cable
clamping. Will need carb balancing, but that should be part of the annual
anyway.
Has anyone ever heard of a runaway engine due to cable failure?
