Dear Listers,
Well, its November 30th and that means three things...
1) Today I am officially 42 years old (sympathy is appreciated)!
2) It marks that last "official" day of the List Fund Raiser!
3) Its the last day I will be bugging everyone for a whole year! :-)

Thank you to everyone that has made a Contribution so far this
year! It is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.
In my opinion the most probable causes you suggested are:
- Inadequate outlet area. Indeed I don't understand where the outlet area
is on the kitfox cowlings. I have just a gap between the cowling and the
firewall underneath the plane. I measured this area and is far less then
the front opening. Where is the air outlet ?
- Exhaust leak. I'll check the ball joints, I know one of them is not
perfect. It got a little deformation by welding. What kind of anti-seize do
you use ?
- Air flow. The 3-blade propeller is at about 5 cm (or 2 inches) from the
front cowling and I have a spinner installed. There are also landing lights
installed in the cowling on the sides of the gearbox. Could these create
some turbolence in the air flow around the air-filter ?
I have not a silencer installed, it is good to know that it robs power.
Ciao
Andrea

My air outlet is along the bottom edge. It measures about 13 x 2 3/4
inches. I also have the outlet all around the aft edge of the bump cowl. I
doubt, however, that this will contribute to an RPM loss. Even with zero
exit you should still have plenty of air swirling around to feed the carbs.

I got mine at the local auto parts store. It's made by Permatex and is
called, simply enough, "anti-seize". It's silver in color and a little greasy.

Subject: | Flaperon Construction |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Guy Buchanan <bnn@nethere.com>
All,
As my Kitfox IV-1200 will live in its trailer with its wings
folded all the time I have become concerned with this problem of the
in-plane stiffness of the flaperon causing excessive loads at the bearings
during trailering or whenever the wings are folded. I therefore desire any
information on the flaperon construction, circa '93.
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan

Guy, when I folded the wings and got everything ready for the trailer the
normal was to use the tube supports at the front (wing root) and the rear where
the wing closes in on the vertical stabilizer.
Of course, before folding the wings there are a couple of things to do and
one of them is to position the flaperon with the trailing edge pointing upward.
Otherwise the flaperon gets in the way of full folding of the wing (and the
trailing edge could damage the fabric on the VS.)
Now when the wings are fully folded and the front and rear tubes are in place
the rudder cover and pads protect the Vertical Stabilizer from the buffeting
of the flaperon.
But for extra measure I used to: At the two safety pin points that come
close together inside the craft (these are the pins that normally couple the
linkage to the flaperons when the wings are spread) I used a small bungee and made
a figure eight and kind of held the flaperon in tension, so that they would
not buffet any during road transit. I used to maximize my transportation to 60
MPH on the highway, a little slower when I knew a large truck was overtaking,
that he could pass more quickly.
So, I did not notice that there was any excessive loads on the flaperon
bearings.
What I did notice though, there was excessive tension on me when I was
unfolding or folding the wings. You require full concentration when doing this
because you can easily damage something when bystanders want to talk to you during
the folding process.
It is only natural that they are curious when they see the wings being folded
or unfolded.
Hope this helps. Eric.

Hi Andrea
This type of power loss was discussed on the list several years ago.
The problem is the air inside the cowl gets hot from the exhaust muffler
and causes a slight loss of power.
I had a silver head 582 in a Model 4 and replaced this with a blue head
582.Both engines showed the loss in power.
It has not caused me any problems in actual use
