If the S7 false ribs are like all the other models
you can straighten them up after covering. Just get
them glued straight then after fabric goes on (after
shrink but before Polybrush) simply nudge them
straight. Even stubborn ones can be 'tacked' with
some Polytack through the fabric. After Polybrush
they're pretty much not shifting.

I'm preparing to replace my S5 original acrylic tubing sight gauges. They've been
in service for 5 years now and have become somewhat discolored, but no other
problems. Looking at ACS catalog I find two types of clear rigid tubing.
One is "clear extruded acrylic tubing" and the other is "clear PVC rigid schedule
40". Does anyone know which one is the correct one to order?
Also, is there a better way than using the clear rigid stuff and having to bend
it? I seem to remember a thread where clear Tygon was used with inserts to keep
it from leaking. Any input before I order would be muchly appreciated.

I believe that John McBean has got them on his web site. He sells the complete
site gauge kit w/placard, etc. I imagine that you could get the tubing from
him or upgrade to his complete setup.

There is an easier way. Call or e-mail John McB for
his sight gauge mod. Look here:

John has quite a list of parts now. Look under wing
accessories for new tubing and sharp looking placards.
These are softer tubes that should last a long time
and not leak or get brittle. If they do, it is an
easy tubing change instead of heat bending the hard
stuff. The kit converts over to tubing fittings
instead of those touchy compression fittings and holds
the soft tubes in place for clear easy reading.

Hi Don,
If you have a model hobby shop near by, they should
have a pile of that thin plywood for you to find
straight material from. Some can be found on the web
too in a google search, but I prefer to see the stuff
and pick straight pieces.
If not, the few that I had to straighten in the wing
and tail were done by pushing them over thru the
fabric and using a few straight pins to hold them in
place. Use enough pins so as not to pucker the fabric
and then poly tack/brush then in place.
Seemed to work ok for me, but if you have a lot of
bent material it is better to look for straight stock
and save the work later.

I went back to tygon. I found that the old barb fittings were fine and I
heated and bent it to get the indicator part vertical. I got tired of the
nylon fittings loosening and leaking.

I finally got to see this on a computer down here in
S. America. Not all computers download pics and
movies well, if at all. Hard enough figuring out the
keyboards.... :-( etc and keys in different
places. I get hand cramps from it.
Nice looking wingtips Lowell. How did you form the
glass part?
What I would like to do is install one of those 2
million candle power lights for a landing light. Darn
things are just too big in diamater though. I have a
hand held and it lights up over 1000' of runway really
well and people can see you when you turn it on.
Might build it into the cowl later on.

Thanks Pete,
On some planes you can keep cranking and suck the fuel
and fire back into the carb/engine, but I dont know
if that will work so well on the Eillison TB. And
once the fuel gets out of the filter it is too late.
In any case, I keep cranking, if I get a backfire just
in case.
I think I might put some more of that thin heat
barrier on the cowl around the intake too, just in
case.

Hey Don,
I solved the problem even before I installed the false ribs by cutting 1/4"
wide strips of 1/32" plywood and glued to to the top edge at full length.
This not only keeps the false rib straight and gives it needed strength but
it gives the fabric a wider, better looking gluing surface.

gauges that come with tygon tubing and a brass rod that lets you
bend to fit your particular application.

Hi Pete,
Sorry about your fire and hands. Sometimes a little
snow is a good thing.
When you get a chance to sum up the damage, we other
NIS owners would like to know what burned for so long.
I have had several back fires of my own when I
overprimed, but none burned anything. I just get some
oil splatter out the filter. I am wondering what you
had that would burn for 2 minutes and light off the
cowl. I might face the same problem in the future?

I'm not sure I should comment here because I'm a Rotax 582
man and have hardly looked at a Sabaru. However our governing body here in
Australia used to be called Australian Ultralight Federation [ AUF ] but is
now Recreational Aviation Australia [ RAAus ] At the moment in our magazine
there is a lot of concern re Sabarus catching fire and they are still
working on the problem so they would no doubt appreciate any comments and
also be glad I'm sure to make same with a view to helping all concerned.
Out of our latest magazine I just recieved yesterday are some suggestions
being entertained. I quote :-
" Last time I wrote I mentioned that a coroner advised that the carburetor
installation should be rethought on the Saburus. Two identifiable causes for
an engine fire are having the carby sit on top of the exhaust, and secondly
an incorrect fuel system set up. Many thanks to those that wrote in or
responded by e'mail. Please note that the Sabaru's are no more dangerous
than any other engine, so awareness of correct set up needs to be spread
From the response I recieved the following suggestions were put forward.
* Drip tray under the carburetor with a drain tube leading away from the
engine.
* Installation of a pressure sensor between the last pump and the
carburetor.
* Correct choice of electric fuel pumps for fuel system, eg rattle
diaphram pump vented to the atmosphere.
There also has been a suggestion of an article on fuel system installation,
which I believe would benifit most readers. I hope to have something put
together for you for the next issue in 2006."

I have the NSI SHO engine with the dual Electromotive HPV-1 ignition and one
of them has gone bad. I have isolated the problem down to the module itself
and discussed this with the technical help at Electromotive. He said it is
not worth tearing it apart to fix it but the replacement part would be $695
and would require me to redesign the whole mounting system for the ignition
since it is different than the old one.
Does anyone have a spare HPV-1 ignition module they would like to sell me?
The guy at Electromotive said I should look on Ebay, but that could take
months for one to show up with no guarantee that I would get it.
Does anyone know if there is an email list for people with the NSI setup?
I have the full schematics for the unit, anyone out there that can help me
repair it?
My plane is grounded until I can get this fixed.

The lens is polycarbonate and I formed it over a plaster plug made from an
impression of the wing tip. I did it in my wife's oven while she was out of
town.

Michael is it the diodes that you think died in them . if so we are in the
process of rebuilding some and will in the next several days if it works .
if it does then will everyone know where the proper diodes can be bought
from .
