HI Guys, I need some advice from those that have a model 1V with an NSI engine.
I am fabricating a pod and am a bit concerned about putting it up against the
back of the radiator. Has anyone gone through this exercise and if so will the
radiator breath OK with the pod backing against it. If anyone has pictures they
could email me it would be really appreciated. Its turning out to be a bigger
job than expected but the end result should be worth the effort. Also, are
there any aerodynamic issues that have been experienced by others that I should
be aware of. Have a great Christmas everyone where ever you are, thanks for
the help throughout the year and enjoy your turkey roast.
Cheers

I'm looking for wheel penetrating skis, too. I have a IV-1200 with the Grove gear
and the Skystar standard ATV tires with their "knobs" ground off. I'd like
to purchase a set of skis but failing in that would be interested in a set of
drawings (for which I'd be willing to pay).

Alan,
I put 300+ hours on 2 different sets of Avid wheel penetration skis (narrow
and wide tire versions). They work great! You'll make all the guys at the
airport jealous when you taxi your ski plane up to the pump, then takeoff
and play around in the powder. I'll post a video on the Lazair Kitfox site
of my Avid on them in the next day or two (visit
http://lazair.com/kitfox/index.php?act=idx and go to the videos section). I
didn't have deep snow at the time but at least you can see how they work
that way.
One year I was lazy (too busy flying) and didn't take my skis off until mid
summer. I had a rather fun experience because of that too; I was going
cross country and had to stop at a small airport for fuel. A very nice
young man came out to fuel me up and was totally taken back by seeing an
airplane at the pump in mid June with skis on it. He looked at me rather
puzzled and asked "Where did you come from?". Holding back my grin, I
responded "Artic Circle". His response, "WOW! And in a plane with a
snowmobile motor!". I felt so bad making him believe my B.S. that I flew
away without ever telling him the truth. Oh well, I'll bet he convinced a
few people over the years that those snowmobile motor powered Avid Flyers
are nothing to underestimate.
Back to the skis, if you are ever operating in really deep snow the wheel
penetration skis might not work as good as a straight ski. The secret I
learned from a friend that flys bush is to make a cover out of ski bottom
material for the hole where the wheel is sticking through the bottom. Take
some air out of the tire so you can slide the cover under the wheel thereby
closing up the hole on the bottom of the ski. Then use either a can of air
or a 12v compressor to reinflate the tire, effectively holding the hole
cover in place. You now have a straight ski that will get you out of that
deep snow you are stuck in. And all you need to do this is to carry a can
of air and the two plastic hole covers in the baggage compartment should you
need them. I used mine once. Worked just like he said they would.
For any of you interested in buying wheel penetration skis like this, my
friend Jack at www.cornellaeroworks.com (telephone is 715-239-3716) is
making some for the Just Aircraft Highlander and Escapades he builds, and
said he might make some for others if they are interested. Contact him if
you are interested. Worth mentioning too is that I suggested he make them
wider for the heavier airplanes, and he said he would build them that way.
That would make the perfect ski for our Kitfoxes.

think about taking off my floats and putting the wheel-skis on my Model IV)

Travis,
My opinion is that there is no right way. I was chastised once by an A and
P for my loose springs. He was in a facility that did a lot of work on
Stearmans. I was taxiing and landing perfectly fine as they were. Since
then I added eye bolts to improve the spring geometry and it resulted in a
bit tighter spring or an over tight spring as you describe. I went back to
the slightly loose to reduce stress on the rudder hinge. My suggestion is
that you try both ways and see what works best for you and then ignore all
the helpful advice, especially from experts in other airplanes.

The one that seales the gap between the firewall edge and the cowl.
There is nothing in the parts list or manuel to give an idea where it
was purchased. I've looked in the ACS cataloge, and don't see it
there. It may be one used on a GA aircraft, and ordered that way. A
suitable replacement number is OK also. T I A. Norm

Mike,
The skis are designed specifically to allow you to land off-airport, as well
as airports. That's the neatest thing about them. If you fly in areas that
get plenty of snow just about anywhere can become your landing area with
wheel skis on your airplane. Frozen solid Lakes and big fields are perfect.
My video shows me operating on Lake Dubay.
Fwiw - My Ski video of my 532 powered A-model Avid is loaded now on the
Kitfox lazair site for anyone interested.

Yep! And don't forget: getting a plane on ski in a hangar is hard!
Wheel penetration makes it so much easier! :-)

Epoxy, as other resins, is a good insulator, Jimmie. In my days of
radio amateur, when my soldering iron was smoking often, I used epoxy
to embed "dirty" soldered components that I had onboard my sailboat.
But I don't know of that particular 3M product.

I have mine just at the point of no slack but not actually stretched. This
does not place a load on the bearings and seems to work OK. A point here
though is if control is a worry and you have the solid Maule SFSA tailwheel
then changing to the Aircraft Spruce 6" homebuilders special soft rubber
taiwheel will work wonders. The the wheel is under $30. Also it runs much
quieter.

Thank you Michel, just looked at your drawing but I have the Grove gear
which has a different axle mounting system, i.e., there is no axle bolt
passing thru gear and wheel. So what I'm going to need is how the skis are
attached when one is using the Grove.
Enjoyed your price - probably not as easy to come up with (except the smile)

Bill, If you are fabricating the skis, I would think it would be a
relatively simple task to make a fitting that would be bolted onto the
inboard side of the gear leg with the required threaded mounting hole. it
would require longer bolts, of course.

If you solder a connection it must be totally isolated from vibration or
it will break were the solder stops wicking up the wire. The wire
hardens and it concentrates all the movement at that transition point.
Solder works well on radios and other small wire items were the harness
can control the movement, but if its not in a tight harness the risk of
failure very real. A lot of people want to make that perfect connection
so crimp and then solder thinking they are being extra good. On any wire
that you do solder shrink wrap the connection to help increase the
radius of any motion it does get.

What is the little blue and white plane?
If the photos do not show what you need, or if the descriptive measurements don't

3 Side-to-side brace tubes- 1/2" OD x 8-3/8" long
2 Vertical post tubes- 1/2" OD x 5-3/8" long
4 Fore-aft diagonal braces- 5/8" OD x 17-1/4" long
2 Crossing diagonal braces- 5/8" OD x 19-3/4" long
Square tube that holds tailwheel- 7/8" square x 8-1/8" long
2 Bolts that hold ski to wheel- 7/16" by 1.825" usable (not including head)
2 Cross-wise tube pieces that hold the 7/16" bolts- 7/8" OD by .854" long
Overall length of nylon foot, measured along curved bottom 59"
Overall width of nylon foot 11-3/4"
Outside-to-outside across long side tubes 9-3/4" (leaving 1" of nylon exposed
to the outsides of
these tubes)
Long side tubes converge (peak) 1" back from the front "peak" of the nylon foot
The square tube that holds the tailwheel is 5/8" in from the trailing edge of the
nylon foot
There are 3 other side-to-side braces as you go forward. From the rear edge of
the square tube
holding the tailwheel, these are located at 13-1/2", 29-1/4", and 42-1/4".
The cut-out for the wheel is 11-3/4" long by 4-1/2" wide. One side of this cut-out
is located at
the inside of the long tube opposite the cross-braces.
The rear edge of the cut-out is 16" from the rear edge of the nylon foot.
The 2 skis are mirror images (obviously). The cut-out is on the "inboard" side
of the ski in each
case.
The two vertical posts supporting the bolts that hold the ski to the wheel are
located 21-14" from
the rear edge of the square tube that holds the tailwheel.
The bolts are centered 6-5/8" above the upper surface of the nylon foot.
The diagonal braces going fore and aft from the bolt housings extend out 16-1/2"
each way from
the base of the vertical support posts.
The inside distance between the cross-wise tube sections that carry the bolts that
attach ski to
wheel is 8-1/8".
The tailwheel is 4" diameter with a 3/8" bolt, 2.33" usable (excluding the head).
The center of the tailwheel is located 3" in from the outside of the inboard long
side tube (7/8").
Let me know how much of this makes sense.

Just one more note on wiring. Use aircraft wire and connections. Do not
use automotive terminals. Use proper aircraft terminals that are welded
and crimped with proper crimpers , not the type used for automotive
insulated connections, then shrink tube the connection. Its no harder to
do correctly, but a little more expensive.

Subject: | Model IV with Rotax 582 |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Doug Sloan" <dougsloan@nctv.com>
I have inherited a Classic IV kit with a Rotax 582 LC engine. This kit is
still in the original packaging. My grandfather never made it to assemble
this airplane. In reviewing the packing slip, the following options were
added: Cargo container mounting brackets, gascolator and mounting bracket,
prop - 3 blade fixed, antenna mount plates, speed fairing kit, vents,
auxiliary wing tank kit (left and right), and full instrument panel. The
rest seems to be the standard full kit.
I have all of the manuals, invoices, etc. I was wondering if anyone could
tell me what this kit was worth or give me an idea how to sell this. I am a
hobby pilot that flies Cessnas and have never attempted a taildragger
transition. I do not have an interest in building a plane either. If
anyone can help, my e-mail address is dougsloan@nctv.com.
Thanks.

Jimmy I have heard that 3m can be removed with a heat gun where Hysol may
not. Just a thought if your pullin some amps or in hot environment. Ron NB
