I am fabricating a pod and am a bit concerned about putting it up against the back of the radiator. Has anyone gone through this exercise and if so will the radiator breath OK with the pod backing against it. If anyone has pictures they could email me it would be really appreciated. Its turning out to be a bigger job than expected but the end result should be worth the effort. Also, are there any aerodynamic issues that have been experienced by others that I should be aware of. Have a great Christmas everyone where ever you are, thanks for the help throughout the year and enjoy your turkey roast. They work great! You'll make all the guys at the airport jealous when you taxi your ski plane up to the pump, then takeoff and play around in the powder. I'll post a video on the Lazair Kitfox site of my Avid on them in the next day or two (visit http://lazair.com/kitfox/index.php?act=idx and go to the videos section). I didn't have deep snow at the time but at least you can see how they work that way. One year I was lazy (too busy flying) and didn't take my skis off until mid summer. I had a rather fun experience because of that too; I was going cross country and had to stop at a small airport for fuel. A very nice young man came out to fuel me up and was totally taken back by seeing an airplane at the pump in mid June with skis on it. He looked at me rather puzzled and asked "Where did you come from?". Holding back my grin, I responded "Artic Circle". His response, "WOW! And in a plane with a snowmobile motor!". I felt so bad making him believe my B.S. that I flew away without ever telling him the truth. Oh well, I'll bet he convinced a few people over the years that those snowmobile motor powered Avid Flyers are nothing to underestimate. Back to the skis, if you are ever operating in really deep snow the wheel penetration skis might not work as good as a straight ski. The secret I learned from a friend that flys bush is to make a cover out of ski bottom material for the hole where the wheel is sticking through the bottom. Take some air out of the tire so you can slide the cover under the wheel thereby closing up the hole on the bottom of the ski. Then use either a can of air or a 12v compressor to reinflate the tire, effectively holding the hole cover in place. You now have a straight ski that will get you out of that deep snow you are stuck in. And all you need to do this is to carry a can of air and the two plastic hole covers in the baggage compartment should you need them. I used mine once. Worked just like he said they would. For any of you interested in buying wheel penetration skis like this, my friend Jack at www.cornellaeroworks.com (telephone is 715-239-3716) is making some for the Just Aircraft Highlander and Escapades he builds, and said he might make some for others if they are interested. Contact him if you are interested. Worth mentioning too is that I suggested he make them wider for the heavier airplanes, and he said he would build them that way. That would make the perfect ski for our Kitfoxes. I was chastised once by an A and P for my loose springs. He was in a facility that did a lot of work on Stearmans. I was taxiing and landing perfectly fine as they were. Since then I added eye bolts to improve the spring geometry and it resulted in a bit tighter spring or an over tight spring as you describe. I went back to the slightly loose to reduce stress on the rudder hinge. My suggestion is that you try both ways and see what works best for you and then ignore all the helpful advice, especially from experts in other airplanes. Use aircraft wire and connections. Do not use automotive terminals.
