You asked about rib repairs and as far as I remember, many repairs are
allowed for certified aircraft so by extension, I think repairs to Kitfox ribs
should be okay. I believe FAA Advisory Circular (AC), 43.15 Aircraft Repair and
Alteration (I may have the number wrong, but if you search the FAA web site,
the correct AC will be obvious.) should help in identifying and explaining
what, where, and how these repairs should be accomplished. Just be sure to
examine each rib very carefully to be sure there is no 'hidden' damage.
Sometimes the obvious damage makes us complacent to doing an extensive review
of
each part.

OK, this is somewhat disconcerting. I'm almost ready to start
covering my Series 6 and I'm making a checklist of things to do
beforehand and going thru the manual again when I come upon
two 14' wood stringers - kind of large parts to have forgotten.
The sticker claims that they are for the "fairing package option"
and the partslist bears this out but for the life of me I cant find
any reference in the manual to these 24011.000 stringers and
what to do with them. They are identical to the stringers in the
wings - 3/8" by 5/8" with a rounded top. Any idea what they
are for????

do you have the bottom false rib option for the lower surface of the wings?
On my series 7 there are two 14 foot bottom stringers (P/N 24011.000) and a
set of bottom false ribs (P/N 24022.000).

Stringers are used for the upper and lower wing false rib option. I
purchased the wing "quick build" option and these stringers along with most
of the false ribs were installed at the factory.

The gearbox you're referring to is the Suzuki Power Group -2 (SPG2). I like
that one, but it would be too long to fit aesthetically. Sold by Airtrikes,
run by Vissili Tarakanov.
I am planning on the Raven, but alas, I'll have to a)move the distributor to
the other side, or b)go DIS.
Someone once said that airplanes are simply a bunch of compromises flying in
formation.
Since I bought the plane, I've come to the conclusion that the Rotax 582 is
poorly suited to aircraft use. I want reliability (over power), and I've
heard much about the Geo "...just turn the key and fly...". This is what I'm
looking for.
I looked at everything else, and only the Geo conversion fits my airframe
and meets my cost goals. Weight is more than the 582, but less than Subaru.
Fuel injection (TBI or MPFI), four-strokes, Turbo ability in un-modded form,
and readily available parts and props all add up to the winning combo for
me.
My motor should arrive next week, and first on the list is a complete
teardown and re-build. Then I'll start sourcing parts for the conversion. I
plan on documenting everything, and providing that to the web for those that
are interested.

Go Bradley! I almost went the geo as they have hp to weight, run forever on
no gas, low maintenance, and even less dirty words. There are now gear
redrives available and often advertised on barnstormers or ebayy. There is
some trike maker in canada which uses them I think. I have VW parts and

Thanks everybody, I think the mystery is solved. I think what happened is
that
when Skystar added the false ribs to the 'quick build wing' option, they
didnt take
the stringers off the partslist so I got the stringers pre-built into the
wing and
duplicate stringers in addition. My fuselage does have the wood stringer
along the
bottom and the aluminum tubing stringer rugging down each side so its not
for that purpose.

Hi Guys, now that Ive licked my wounds for a few days its time to face
reality and look at the damage objectively. Considering she was rolling
around in the surf for around an hour, 4473 in largely in tact with damage
primarily sustained by the wings. Surprisingly the spares are fine.
Certainly a testament to the strength of these wonderful aircraft. The
airframe is straight and nothing popped. All welds appear to be intact but
without stripping off the cloth and carrying out and NDT its hard to know
exactly. I have had many offers of help with parts and I believe I will be
knocking on Johns door for those hard to get items. Obviously without any
support services here in Oz much will have to be manufactured or purchased
from the USA. I am happy to pay for any parts that may be available and
would appreciate an email from those of you that have spare instruments,
wing ribs or any item that will assist in the rebuild. Both bump cowls have
also been destroyed. One question I do!
have is, is it OK to splice broken ribs? Its just a thought but looking at
them I feel that the breaks are so clean that a splice plate on each side
might be OK.

Jeeze I hate it when I forget to put in those large parts! Either that, or,
Skystar was just trying to test our deductive reasoning skills!
There are three places the stringers go - A) Throught the top of the wing
ribs to support the upper false ribs (one stringer for each wing); B) Through
the bottom of the wing ribs if you got the lower false rib option (one
stringer for each wing - if you got the lower false rib option you should
also have gotten a bunch of lower false ribs which have less of a crown than
the uppers and are longer than the uppers); and C) a single stringer for the
bottom of the fuselage (this one is a different length that the others).
That's a total of either three, or five stringers depending on what you
ordered - they all have the same cross section. They are not for the sides of
the fuselage - that is what the aluminum tubes are for.
A word to the wise - don't always assume Skystar shipped things the way a sane
and reasonable person might expect. I had several interesting muck-ups in my
order. A) Two left wing tips (I finally gave up trying to make two left wings
and went ahead and got a right wing tip!); B) Some incorrect parts which were
cleverly disguised under the correct part number; but, where an obviously
different part was substituted (ostensibly to test my abilities in spatial
orientation); C) A few cases where half as many, one fourth as many; or twice
as many parts were included for a purpose (I counted my fingers and that came
out right - so I figure the parts count must have been wrong) . (And we're
not even talking about the $18,000 worth of parts I am currently purchasing
for a second time!)
If you didn't order the fairing option and didn't get the lower false ribs;
the fact that you have two extra stringers may simply be a muck-up on
Skystars part - you might not be going nuts after all.
If you go over your original order and your inventory checkoff when you got
your kit the situatiion should be apparent.
I have a couple pals back in MN with model 6s; one flying and one being
constructed. They both love 'em.

Jeeze I hate it when I forget to put in those large parts! Either that, or,
Skystar was just trying to test our deductive reasoning skills!
There are three places the stringers go - A) Throught the top of the wing
ribs to support the upper false ribs (one stringer for each wing); B) Through
the bottom of the wing ribs if you got the lower false rib option (one
stringer for each wing - if you got the lower false rib option you should
also have gotten a bunch of lower false ribs which have less of a crown than
the uppers and are longer than the uppers); and C) a single stringer for the
bottom of the fuselage (this one is a different length that the others).
That's a total of either three, or five stringers depending on what you
ordered - they all have the same cross section. They are not for the sides of
the fuselage - that is what the aluminum tubes are for.
A word to the wise - don't always assume Skystar shipped things the way a sane
and reasonable person might expect. I had several interesting muck-ups in my
order. A) Two left wing tips (I finally gave up trying to make two left wings
and went ahead and got a right wing tip!); B) Some incorrect parts which were
cleverly disguised under the correct part number; but, where an obviously
different part was substituted (ostensibly to test my abilities in spatial
orientation); C) A few cases where half as many, one fourth as many; or twice
as many parts were included for a purpose (I counted my fingers and that came
out right - so I figure the parts count must have been wrong) . (And we're
not even talking about the $18,000 worth of parts I am currently purchasing
for a second time!)
If you didn't order the fairing option and didn't get the lower false ribs;
the fact that you have two extra stringers may simply be a muck-up on
Skystars part - you might not be going nuts after all.
If you go over your original order and your inventory checkoff when you got
your kit the situatiion should be apparent.
I have a couple pals back in MN with model 6s; one flying and one being
constructed. They both love 'em.

The sticker claims that they are for the "fairing package option"
and the partslist bears this out but for the life of me I cant find
any reference in the manual to these 24011.000 stringers and
what to do with them. They are identical to the stringers in the
wings - 3/8" by 5/8" with a rounded top. Any idea what they
are for????

Hello everyone
I'm just getting ready to start my float installation on a series 6. John Mcbean
has been very helpful with misc. drawings and such for general float installation
but I have nothing specific for czech amphibs on a 5, 6,7 kitfox. What
I'm looking for is the rules of thumb concerning step location relative to the
center of gravity, float angle relative to the wing and so on. I'm also looing
for other sources of float strut material.
This list has had answers for everything else over the past couple years, I
hope you can help solve this one too. (and maybe someday I'll be a helper too!)

Here's something out of my files that might help you. I have some more info
I will forward separately once I lay my hands on it that I received from Jay
Frey (EDO) and Matt Sigfried (Aerocet). But essentially the setup should be
similar to your old model IV with the Aerocets. You might also want to talk
to Paul Liedl over in Minnesota as he set up a Model 5 on Murphy amphibs a
few years ago and had to figure it all out on his own. But I think he had

Installation
Two critical factors determine float installation: 1) step location in
relation to center of gravity and 2) angle of incidence of float to wing
chord. The builder should consult with the aircraft manufacturer or designer
in this regard.
In the limited experience of the author, the following information is
offered.
Step Location
Direction on float step location in relation to c of g varies in the
reference literature. Some sources indicate the float step should be located
directly under the c of g, others suggest the float step should be some
moderate distance behind the c of g. Two methods for locating the step in
relation to the c of g have been found. One is to locate the step behind the
aircraft c of g a distance equal to 1/3 times the width of the float at the
step (e.g. With an 18" wide float, the step would be located 6" behind the c
of g). The second is locate the step 5 degrees behind the c of g (e.g. The
step should be located on a line 5 degrees aft of a vertical line extending
down from the c of g point on the wing).
The closer the step to the c of g the less stable the float/aircraft,
though the nose of the aircraft can be drawn higher giving better prop
clearance on tractor aircraft. If the c of g is too far forward, the
aircraft tends to plow nose down when power is initially applied and resist
planing.
Angle of incidence and stance
The angle of incidence is the angle of attack of the wing in relation to
the float's longitudinal axis. In the authors limited reading on the
subject, this varies from 3 degrees to approximately 12 degrees. The greater
angle of incidence results in greater parasitic drag from the floats but
faster takeoffs. The aircraft manufacturer may be able to provide some
direction on this subject as well. Floats should be 4 ? to 6 feet apart
depending on wing span.
General
Other elements of float attachment such as determining attachment points
on your aircraft need to be determined by the builder as dictated by the
requirements of the aircraft. Again, consult your aircraft manufacturer in
this regard.

Thanks John but in Oz we are governed by a different set of rules to
yourselves. Recreational Aviation Australia provides blanket regulations for
both ultralight and the light sports category. My aircraft was registered in
the 19 cat which means it is experimental and can be worked on by the owner
and to a non specific set of standards. The only condition is that as the
build or in this case repair is being undertaken, a licensed aircraft
maintenance engineer (LAME) provides guidance and approves the method of
work on a periodic basis. It really is at the end of the day at the
discretion of the owner as to how the work is undertaken. Its a blessing in
disguise and provides an enormous amount of flexibility. Im not sure about
the sections of your regulation that you refer to but it appears by your
email that splicing is acceptable in certain cases. Is that a correct
assumption? Thanks John.

That is a correct assumption.. BUT.. AC 43.13 will show how the splice is to
be done to be "In Accordance With" (IAC) or "as Acceptable by the
Administrator" to be approved for airworthiness.. I realize that you fall
under another set of rules but the guidelines in AC 43.13 will show an
"Approved" method for the repair. Which is another way of saying.. It's a
good guideline to start with....
