Kirk, did you try a complete new set of plugs?

didn't not think much of it because I didn't have anything go wrong until
last winter. The carbs started to leak fuel from the vent line. I sent the
carbs to Lockwood, they checked out fine. I changed motor mounts, balanced
the prop, and installed new carb mounts. I checked resistance with an
ohmmeter on the ignition coils and found three were out of spec. I bought
three new coils from Lockwood and changed all the plug wires. I changed all
the sparkplugs as well. Still had the slight rough sound in both sides of
the ignition, and the "B" side ignition had a slightly lower drop than the
A.

out the springs. Slight roughness still there. I did that about two months
ago.

rough than usual. I did an ignition check at 3850 rpm. The B side dropped

the stator because that would be a total failure like the modules.

one. The one was about 6.02K ohm. The book says 4.4 to 6 K ohm. So, this may
be the cause I don't know yet.

> As I stated before, I changed out three coils because they were out of
spec. I thought maybe I should buy the fourth coil, but the rough drop in
rpm is on the B side ignition, and the old coil is on the A side ignition.
Keep in mind that there is a slight roughness in BOTH A and B side
ignitions. It's just that the more rough, and 325 drop in rpm, is on the B
side, and I cannot fly the plane.

Is anyone of you out there using the Evans waterless coolant in your engines, whether
auto or aircraft?
I'm considering making the switch while I've got my Soob powered Fox5 down for
annual, but thought I'd ask if there's any personal experience any of you might
share.
Also, any sources and/or prices would be appreciated.
Tnx,
Deke

Kirk
My ignition may be different from yours in that it is the type
that mounts behind the firewall. I found it by systematically
moving every wire connection. I finally noted that this
particular wire was slightly loose and probably the result of a
cold solder joint. The connection problem was a solder lug on the
condensor for the B ignition. In the event your ignition system
is the older type we can get together by phone and I will be glad
to assist. No doubt you are on the right track and will find it.
Let me know if I can assist in anyway.

In my engines it appears to cool pretty much as well
as regular EG. I used to run 100% EG in the Kitfox
to avoid boiling after shutdown and one has to be
concerned with gelling. Not with Evans. That and
the lifetime nature of Evan's alone are well worth
the few extra bucks to me. Plus, the higher boiling
temperature is nice down here in TX were running at
95 to 100+ OAT a lot of the year is normal.

Ted

Subject: | Best RPM for takeoff with IVO prop and 912ULS |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "wingnut" <wingnut@spamarrest.com>
Hello. I'm a new owner of a Model IV 1200 with a 912UL and an IVO prop. The checklist
that came with the airplane instructs me to set the prop pitch for takeoff
at 5200RPM. According to the published specs for the 912UL, peak power is
made at 5800 for two minutes then 5400 continuous. Shouldn't I set the prop pitch
for peak power?
Finding the best setting for cuise is another area of confusion. I'm assuming that,
since the RPM is adjustable with pitch that I need to look at the manifold
pressure to set for 80% power. Then it's just a matter of tweaking the pitch
for max speed right? So what manifold pressure constitues 80% power?

Grant,
Wow...yours came in almost exactly the same as mine.
Rt. main 432
Lt. main 437
Tail 52
921 Total empty.
I did have a small battery in the back that weighed only 12
pounds---changed it to a 22 pound Odyssey
to help weight and balance.
Put a Tool kit in the back of the baggage sack that weighs about 15-20
pounds....still have room for
a couple of 200 pounders, full fuel, and 65 pounds in the baggage bay!
Only thing that out performs mine at my airport is a Rans s 7 with a 912.
His does not have the gross
that we have though.
I use a grass strip that is 1600 feet with a 50 foot cottonwood at one
end...use half of it (most of the time)
taking off and landing!
You will love the performance.

Dee,
Which product is best for us flyers? NPG, NPG+, or
NPG-R?
I might switch to this in Florida with the heat the
turbo puts out.

Mal I'm sorry there are none quite like this. There is a very good Avid
flyer group at yahoo. Also there is the lazair sit which links to a joint
Avid / kitfox forum. What do we stink?

Yes good stuff and eliminated the need for a thermostat. You will need
double the standard NSI over flow due to greater expansion. Be sure to
use the flush first. Get a low pressure cap as well.

Is anyone of you out there using the Evans waterless coolant in your
engines, whether auto or aircraft? I'm considering making the switch
while I've got my Soob powered Fox5 down for annual, but thought I'd ask
if there's any personal experience any of you might share. Also, any
sources and/or prices would be appreciated. Tnx, Deke

In the true tradition of the Internet I'll offer an opinion even though I
don't know what I'm talking about. If I remember correctly, the IVO is an
electrically adjustable, but not constant speed, prop. I'm guessing, then,
that 5200 is the static RPM that will get you 5800, or thereabouts, at Vy.
Regarding your question about how to set power: a very useful equation
someone once offered was that the aircraft velocity was proportional to the
cube root of the power. Thus, if you know your maximum velocity at maximum
power, you can find 80% power by adjusting power until you achieve 93% of
that maximum velocity value. (0.93 is the cube root of 0.8.)
