Michel, I am barely sustained in these times of no flying by thoughts of
previous flights. Back in December, one of my last flights in the
Motorfalke, before the snow/freeze set in, was late afternoon, a fog along
the Danube, but the airfield was clear, a high layer of cloud but clear in
the West with the sun going down behind the Alps so they stood out in white
and dark contrast between the layers of cloud. I just hung about up there
soaking it all in until I really had to land. There was another Falke up
there and later in the club someone started talking about this great sunset
and we realised we had both been inspired by the beauty of it all and didn't
want to come down. The circuit bashers in Cessnas and other types hadn't
noticed a thing. So the intoxicants of that flight have kept me going but
your comment about "feeling very sick" alerts me to the fact that if I don't
get a fix pretty soon I will start to twitch. Yes a bit overdone but there's
the Kitfox in the hangar ready to go and no sign of the "tauwetter." The Fox
is a bit faster than the Falke (actually quite a bit) but it will one day
take me on long, long cross country flights across Europe. Can't wait.

Gosh! Whenever I have been travelling or sailing, Kerry, I had with me
two small books: The Little Prince from St. Exupery (also a pilot) and
Bach's Jonathan Livingstone Seagull. In fact, the company I am working
for now, is called Seagull, in honour of the book. The company was
founded by a friend who also loved the idea to "fly to reach beyond."

The pilot was not on the list. The plane was owned by his father. His father
was likely lurking here.
This accident was reported here on the list by Bill Hammond with a follow up
by me. We watched him take off from our home airport a few minutes before
the accident, which happened about 5 miles north of here. (48v)

I changed the subject so more people might read the message.
Hoping I will to prevent a repeat for someone else.
There has been some discussion in the past regarding some of the dangers of static
electricity and refueling. Well, I have a story to share. Some of you know
me and know I have been working on this model IV for two years now. Seems like
I started it yesterday. It has been the most rewarding project I have ever been
involved with. I am finished covering and I am in the painting stage now.
I must confess it is much easier than I thought it would be. Just like the poly-fiber
book says, "poly-tone is dead easy". Well, the tail feathers are silver
the fuse is white and today I started painting on the wings. I had one wing
on the rotating fixture in the booth (garage) and was wiping it down with C-2210
to prep for the first spray coat of poly-brush. I could "feel" the static electricity
popping as I wiped the wing as I had felt it numerous times before
in the painting process when all of a sudden, "woof", the rag ignited and I had
a nice fire on my hands. The wing was burning and so was the rag. Luckily, I
blew the fire on the wing out almost instantly (no damage other than some soot
and pride), but the rag was saturated with C-2210 and as I threw it to the floor
it flared up pretty good. I kicked it to the door, got the door open and
stomped it out, but, WOW what a scare. This is my third incident in my life with
static electricity. Y'all be careful out there.
Any input on how to prevent this would be greatly appreciated. I am not done painting
yet, but I am a little nervous about wiping down with C-2210. I was using
painters rags from Home Depot (t-shirt type material).

I have been preaching a product called static guard for a lot of years
now. It is a product that women use on dresses and the same stuff that
you use around computes. It is at your grocery store. When painting
spray it inside the wing or in whatever you are working on. A ground
wire is also a good idea. It will really help in the painting as static
will mess up the paint and pull everything into the wet paint, and it
might help keep you from blowing it up. If you refuel yourself, spray it
on the funnel, the wing and the gas can before you pour gas.

I haven't seen it but, Yes, that would be me, that is when I had my Kitfox
model IV XL. I was the odd duck flying the Kitfox amongst all those Kolb's.
It was a great fly in. We flew into the ultralite field, (A real hoot if you
have never done it!!). Rick, John and John flew into Iron Mountain together
the night before and landed at my friend Scott's field, (about 2 miles North
of me) they spent the night there and then we all hooked up at IMT in the
morning and flew formation to Oshkosh for the 2003 Airventure. John had
reporters from an Ultralite Magazine waiting to interview him when he
landed. He was also met by the folks from Kolb who slapped a free weeks pass
for Airventure on each of our wrists, yes, even the odd duck, they are great
folks. Looking forward to when I can do it again.

I could use two. I had a plug open up and caused one side of one of the
E-boxes to go bad and I already had one side of the other E-box faulty from
that same open plug when I housed the plane for the winter inspection and
repairs. I'm changing out the panel fuel tank,and installing a full panel
and header tank at this time. I'm trying to find and fix all the problems
now while I have the time.
