I asked this question under a different title and got no response, so
I'll try again:
I've had a little trouble taxiing my IV
(tailwheel w/Grove gear, and Jabiru engine with the normal CW rotation
viewed from the seat) and making a left turn with a right-rear
quartering wind. No amount of left rudder/brake combination seems to be
able to overcome the wind during this maneuver. I haven't been lucky
enough to have a calm day to practice my taxiing, and both days that I
did, the wind was the same....about 12-15. Is there a "demonstrated
crosswind handling ability" published for these planes? I haven't seen
it if it is. I'm still learning to fly, and have only 2.3 hours
instruction in a tailwheel 180 and only 1.3 hrs taxiing in the 'fox, in
addition to about 34 hrs in other models (trikes).

Lynn: I have an IV with the Jab 3300 and have had a similar problem when
taxiing
more than about 5 mph. Slower doesn't seem as bad. ( Wind about 10/14)
With my engine the tail is lighter ( about 43 # ) than it should be.

Hi Eric:
I did. I think the dorsal ridge enhances the overall appearance of the
kitfox. It also prevents water from just sitting there. There are some
pictures in the photo gallery of my web page.

I've flown in nasty 15-20 with gusts up to 25mph. My
IV likes to weathervane and it isn't easy to get her
around when taxiing downwing. Sounds pretty normal.
I guess I demonstrated something (maybe ignorance) on
those days... :

Lynn, I have landed in a consensus (flight of six) derived, over 25 mph.
the Kitfox has enough rudder authority to handle significant cross winds.
My guess is that with a little practice you will develope the technique.
Are you using the flaperons during taxi as you used when learning to fly?
Is your tailwheel unlocking in your turn? You might check the chains for
proper tension or the springs. Lots of theorys there.

Say a guy is planning a flight to see Hell's Canyon. What is the best route

special radio procedures? I may be in my Commander 114 rather than the
Kitfox (wife and brand new baby), and I want to keep things safe and

Hello kitfox flyers, How does the KF perform in a good X-wind of say 15 to
18 knots at about 45 degrees. or should one not be flying that day? Did
Skystar or D.Denny ever set an arbitrary figure based on standard piloting
skills for a max X-wind ? I fly a high wing loaded a/c and my airport is
notorious for x-winds. I am considering a kitfox for local fun flights.

If you have been using full rudder deflection you have been unlocking your
tailwheel steering. Try to keep it locked then add brake as necessary. We have
no trouble in a KF V .

They are steel that goes over the bolt inside the oilite bushing. I may
have an extra set, how many do you need. John McBean or course is the
source for all that stuff. ( do you need the insert or the large
bushing. The bushing is a standard item from most any bearing supply
shop. )

I would agree my first 50 hours.... no way...now I have over 300 and feel
pretty comfortable in a strong crosswind. One of the limitations is the
rudder authority, the Kitfox has a very powerfull rudder, that, combined with
proper technique, you really handle a strong crosswind.

I find that the Kitfox does a good job in a cross wind, for a light
plane. My wife and I were flying Young Eagles one day at a town close by
when a wind storm came up. We decided to head for the barn before it got
really bad. I was flying a Cherokee and she flying the Kitfox. When we
got home the wind was so bad I ran out of rudder so had to jam it and
swing it around on landing, and angled the runway at that. I was really
worried that it was too much for Linda but as I was getting out of the
plane at the hangar she taxied up. I said that was a heck of a
crosswind, and she said it was not that bad. One thing to remember. If
the wind is too strong for you to safely land on the runway- don't land
there. Use the ramp or the taxiway or a different airport. With a strong
headwind you only roll a few feet so find an open spot on the airport
and land there. If it is a towered airport request were you need. Don't
be shy. We get so used to following the rules and the normal that we
forget that when we are flying we make the rules if we need to if
required to be safe. I have seen it so bad that the plane had no
forward speed at all on touchdown. The pilot had to just sit there and
fly it on the ground until we could find enough people to hold it down
and pull it out of the wind. The place you will flip it is turning 90 to
the wind while on the ground. It will get under the wing and take you
over if the wind is strong enough, but my guess is it takes close to 40
mph to do that.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the fiberglass
fairing on the rudder post of my M4 speedster.(under
construction) The construction manual says to cut
large enough holes in the fairing to get the attaching
bolts through the rudder tabs and tail post rod ends.
OK, I assume when the fabric is applied the holes need
to be cut out to provide access as stated above, My
question is, are these holes covered up in some way
after final assembly as they are quite large and will
certainly be visible? I hope the makes sense to
someone but not to me! Looking forward to some help on
this one, Thanks, Don.

Eric,
I have pictures on SportFlight:
http://www.sportflight.com/cgi-bin/uploader.pl?action=view&epoch=1028485209
I think it improves the aesthetics as well as smooths the airflow at the
bulkhead at the from of the rear access. I got grief that I had added to
much weight to the plane. They are probably right, I could have done it
lighter, but the wood I used was very light redwood. I am please with the
result.

Hi Eric,
I just had it done on my IV and I know of two other guys in the phoenix area that have it done and are flying. It sure adds a nice touch. I have photos on my buildsite under Mods if you would like to see it prior to getting covered. www.azshowersolutions.com/Kitfox1.html

Did you want the weight of the engine or the whole plane? Mine

All,
I am beginning to tear into the wiring on my 5, I want to get to know it
since I did not do it. It has a breaker marked "Field" only one wire from
the breaker (other side of breaker to nothing) to half of the master, other
side of master has a wire that dead ends in the harness to nothing?? Im
confused, anyone know what this is for? Is it hooked up right? Where should
it go?

Michel,
Engine weights are tough to nail down because you have troubles comparing
apples to apples.
As another data point, my 5/7 912S came in at 776 lbs with Big tires and
Grove gear.

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: D& D Syverson <ddsyverson@comcast.net>
Lloyd,
You are probably looking at someone's previous custom work where they may have
used a split alternator switch and only used part of it. Normally these have
one side to connect the main bus to the battery and the other side to connect
the field of the alternator to energize it sp it produces current. The
nomenclature is somewhat of an artifact from the days when we had generators,
since, on a generator the field is part of the frame (which energizes the
generator) and the output current is pulled off the armature .... on an
alternator - the field ends up being the rotor and the frame coils produce
the output, but we still call the energizing part of the device the "field"
even if it is the spinning part.
It is pretty much impossible to tell you if it is hooked up right or not. What
is right depends on what kind of a system you have (rotax, auto, or
lycombing/continental which are pretty much like an auto charging system)
and if the original builder actually used the switch for that purpose, or if
they used a salvaged alternator/ bus switch for something else. A guy is
going to have to trace wires and understand how their system is wired and to
what, unless the original builder left you some sort of notes.
Good Luck,
Dave

No the holes are not covered, and yep... are definitely visible. But to me
they add a high tech look to the rudder. I'm fairly picky, but they don't
bother me.

Hi Lloyd,
I agree with what you have already been told, that
there are several ways to wire the
battery/master/alternator. You'll need to chase wires
and make your own diagram to really know it as is.
Is your plane operating like this? I assume you are
talking about a split master switch? As I understand
it, the field side of your master goes to a CB and
then nowhere? And the B+ solenoid
(battery/alternator) side of your master has a wire to
nowhere? Sounds like this switch isn't doing
anything.
One pretty normal setup is with the B+ side of the
master switch wired to ground on one side and the
battery solenoid on the other. That is for a solenoid
that is "on" when grounded thru the switched pole.
The 2 other major poles off the solenoid are for the
battery and for the aircraft systems. Don't reverse
the battery in and out poles.
The field (alternator) side of the master switch might
use B+ power on one side, then thru the switch to a CB
and the alternator field off the other side of the
switch. This could be wired differently too,
depending on your alternator.
I think you need to first find out how your alternator
and master solenoid work before you can determine if
they are wired properly. Even when your head is well
wired for electrical systems, this is going to take
some grunt work.

Does yours have the Engine Instrumentation System or the EXP 2 bus
installed? If so I have develop simplified circuits of these components and unified
them into one simple diagram for trouble shooting by the pilot.
