    Subject: Kitfox on ski technique
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no> Hello guys, Yesterday was the first nice day this year and I went flying. I used the opportunity to do some touch and go, with my skis, on the snow, on the shoulders of the runway. It didn't go very well. There was about a good foot of powdery snow with a thin crust of ice on the top. Because I don't have a ski on the tailwheel, I try to land on two wheels, tail up. But then, the drag (wheel penetration skis) in the snow is such as the nose tend to go down. Normal reaction is to pull the stick. But then the AoA increases and the plane is airborne again, to fall back in the snow a few yards away. It felt like the bad landings I did when I learnt to fly my tailwheel Kitfox. I did four such bad snow landings then gave up. I can't find the proper technique. Should I do a three-points landing? Do you, guys, have a ski on your tailwheel? How do you attach it? Thanks in advance, Michel

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Larry Martin" <CrownLJ@verizon.net> Hi, I got a tow bar with my airplane and live only one country mile from the field. I used the tow bar a couple times and I did not like the stress that it appeared to put on the tail post area of the airplane, especially in a turn, nor did I enjoy the stress that it put on me. Though I keep the airplane at the field, I bought a boat trailer and did a real rudimentary modification and only have about $100. in the whole thing. It is easier and less stressful on me and the airplane with it on the trailer. You still have to observe the normal towing limitations with regard to fuel in wing, control surfaces, etc. I use it to bring the plane home for extended maintenance and it is made in such a manner that other airplanes would easily be accommodated on it, so other can use it. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: Lynn Matteson <lynnmatt@jps.net> I didn't use that material for the gap seal, because I made an airfoiled vertical stab. and rudder, so the gap seal wasn't necessary. But I did use the material for the top of the rudder and vertical stab., however. I epoxied it in place, laminating it to the width that I needed, then used Hysol to smooth out the surface, and covered with Polyfiber cloth and the usual products. So in that application, the MEK did not get a chance to attack the gap seal material. To be safe, do a test of MEK on a hidden area to be sure. I got no instructions with it, but I looked at pictures to decide what to do. I think one of those pictures was on Skystar's online catalog. Check Lazair site or John McBean's site. Otherwise Google "kitfox" images. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: James Shumaker <jimshumaker@sbcglobal.net> One more thing about towing Don, I towed so much that the towbar began to bend on me and had to have plates welded on to beef it up. Jim shumaker James Shumaker <jimshumaker@sbcglobal.net> wrote: --> Kitfox-List message posted by: James Shumaker Don I towed my Model III to the airport every time I flew for about 4 years. I used up a few pairs of tires, but I thought that was cheaper than a trailer. And they were the cheap atv tires that were only designed for about half the load. When I got a set of cheap golf cart tires the load rating was much higher, the rubber thicker and they lasted a couple of years or more. Hitching and unhitching did not take long. Maybe 15 or 20 mintes at each end. Not much longer than pulling it out of a hanger, or so I thought. But when I finally got a hanger I discovered it up it really does add about an hour to each flight. I also got a bit of hanger rash from storing it at home. Mostly nicks and scraps. But there really is an added risk for damage every time you fold the wings out and fold them in. When there is wind, the whole operation gets even dicier. The day I lost the turtle deck over the top of the wing ( it missed the wing but hit the engine cowl) was the day I decided that a hanger was not that expensive after all. Oh, and don't tow with the tanks full of fuel. and make absolutely sure that that you use the braces. The welded tabs can snap off so make sure that you have a back up to the wing tip braces. Also, strap the elevator up (stick back with the seat belts). That will help keep the wings from swinging open while towing. Which leads to great damage. I would love to hear from anyone who has used one, either good or bad. I'm not sure if I should go this route of should consider a modified boat trailer. Maybe your comments will help make up my mind. Thanks, Don. M4/1200-912 Speedster Don Stevenson, Caledon, Ontario, Canada

When you think about it, it will help to keep the aircraft straighter on roll out and shorten landing distance. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: Herbert R Gottelt <gofalke@sbcglobal.net> Michel, I had a similar experience with home-made wheel penetrating skis. The snow was very deep. Upon trying to land, the Fox decellerated very fast, in fact so fast that I was afraid to get airborn again. I had to use full power to get off again before I stopped. The lack of a tail ski should not effect the performance that much. I think my problem was the wheels penetrated to far down, about 1-1/2" below the skis, and the gap between the tires front and back were too large for snow to accumulate. I took the skis off, waiting for modification, if I ever feel like it. Herb Gottelt, M4-1200,912UL, Mt.
