Hi Guys, for those who asked me to keep them up to speed on where Im at with the
rebuild I am happy to say that the engine goes back in this weekend after having
a rebuild. The panel is slowly regaining its former appearance and apart
from a tacho and altimeter which were ordered today, the other instruments are
either installed or ready to go in. The wing rebuild will be the last issue to
deal with and parts are slowly being secured so Im happy to say that the light
at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. You really dont appreciate how
much flying becomes a part of who you are until you are deprived of the privilege.
Its just not the same being a passenger. While Im tapping away on the computer
I'd like to ask the Subaru drivers that are using the Warpdrive ground
adjustable what their impressions of the prop are. Id really appreciate some
feedback on performance as I have been offered a 3 blade with hub for a really
good price.
Cheers

I try to imagine while hoping it never happens to me, Graeme. Good to hear that
the rebuilding is under way. Flying again is only a matter of time, now. Good
luck,

Thank you Jim and Herb. The reason I am afraid to dig my tail in the snow when
landing is that I am afraid it would sink so much in the snow that, the often
frozen crust, would rip the fabric off the fuselage's end, lock the rudder and
even damage the elevators. What do you think?
Cheers,
Michel

why the primer line should tap off downstream of the console shutoff valve?

Michel,
I was given a picture last fall of a tail wheel ski
made out of an aluminum dish pan. Your wheel sticks
thru like the main wheels, but the dish pan keeps it
from sinking into the snow. Brackets were made and
riveted to the pan to attach it to the tail wheel
assembly. The only problem I saw with the system is
that you would not have help steering on the snow
since the pan was a round dish shape. Only the rudder
would be effective.
Anyway, a very inexpensive tail wheel sky that worked
for a Rans S-7 and might work for a Fox too.
Unfortunately I am in Equador and not at my home
computer to send the pic. Be back next week if you
are interested in it, but I bet you could figure one
out yourself by then. Just have to wait until your
wife is out of the kitchen to grab a pan....

I have seen something similar on a EuroCub but my worry is that, if the
snow is soft enough, it would dig like a plough. I understand that, in
the snow, the tailwheel won't steer at all. It's not a problem, to
taxi, I have to give so much throttle that I usually do it on the main
gear, tail up, using the rudder only.
I was thinking of making something that would be ahead of the
tailwheel, something I could attach to the cross pipe that is used to
attach a dorsal fin, on seaplanes. That ski, or aluminium plate would
then make sure that the snow won't reach up to the fuselage AND that no
snow can accumulate on the top of that "ski."
Any thoughts, anyone?

To all who replied to my question regarding a tow bar
for a model 4 Speedster, I thank you. I think
that is the way I will go, now I need to find a source
for one or have one made, I would also like some
information on the proper towing brace for the wings
etc. If you can help in this matter, it would be much
appreciated, Don

we used a IVO ground adjustable on our Subaru 3.2 liter and it is ok at
cruise but NDG at climb .Our best climb rate after using many different prop
pitches is about 45 fpm. Best fix we made on the Eggenfellner fuel injected non
turbocharged was to punch a hole in the diaghragm of the original fuel pressure
regulator to make it inop and install a ground adjustable fuel pressure
regulator from Eggenfellner and set it accordingly. cruises like a scalded duck
at 140mph (redline ) and about 25 inch manifold pressure and less than 7gph..
Still climbs like a dog no matter what prop pitch. I have no experience
with your warp drive prop however for what it is worth Eggenfellner recommends
Subaru engines use only in flight adjustable prop. In his RV kits I have been
told by RV builders that he recommends setting full throttle for takeoff and
reducing rpm with pitch changes leaving full throttle for cruise..

IMHO You want your main fuel shut-off valve to do just that. If primer line branches
off upstream of shutoff there will be, in theory, a full time 'wet' line
to your engine. Admittedly it's a small diameter line and has to pass thru the
primer pump but if pump failed, fuel could possibly drain into carbs with no
way of shutting it off.

Graeme,
I have a three blade Warp Drive counter clockwise rotation on my Model 5 with EJ-22
and Ross Redrive. I am still experimenting with the cruise, but one morning
at full gross, 480' field elevation, & 9 F. OAT, I was seeing 1900 fpm.
In the summer, with two aboard, 85 degrees, and more of a cruise pitch, we were
still seeing 1000 fpm.
I haven't been impressed with cruise, but I still need to do some experimenting
with pitch.
I hope to get some cruise statistics by mid Feb.

Michel,
I have an Avid on ski's and I use the following method. I always take off and
land with full flaperons. I also put a 5lb lead weight on the tail to offset
the weight of the skis. I approach as per a normal 3 point landing, but just
hold the tail off from touching and allow the mains to touch. I am usually adding
power at this point. (about 3500 rpm Rotax 3:1) Snow does produce a fair
amount of drag and it will want to tail up. Just hold the nose where you want
it. If you lift off again, I would suggest that you may be too fast on touch
down, and too brisk on the stick. I normally touch down at 40ish mph ias.
It indicates a stall at 38ish. I would highly encourage the use of full flapperon
to get the attitude more shallow. Some will say that you will lack aileron
control, but I do not find this to be the case, but more rudder is needed
to stay coordinated. The Avid flapperons are limited to 15 degrees ref a level
wing.
Hope this help. I have to run to pick up the kids.
Larry

There great figures Ben and I'd be happy with that kind of performance
in climb. It sounds like you're not entirely happy with cruise though.
What do you feel you'll be able to get after some tweeking? My engine is
the NSI EA81 which doesnt have the grunt you have but Im not as heavy
either being a model 1V.
