--> Kitfox-List message posted by: D& D Syverson <ddsyverson@comcast.net> Guy, Prepping steel is pretty much a matter of being sure: 1) there is no foreign matter on the surface such as oil, grease, silicon (the worst) or wax and; 2) roughing up the surface to provide sufficient tooth so paint will stick. By far the best method that I have used is to sandblast a steel part (not recommended for aluminum). If that isn't an option, us a flexible abrasive wheel, sandpaper or something similar to roughen the surface so the paint will stick. For what it is worth, sandblasted chrome plating (I try real hard not to breath the dust - no - I make sure I don't!) works fine - I've done this with cars where an original chrome plating was to be refinished with paint to match the remained of the bodywork on a street rod. The only thing you have to make sure of with a plated part is to check it to be sure there are not any delaminated layers sticking up due to insufficient sandblasting or sanding - usually is not a problem, but look for it. Getting the foreign material off is a matter of using the proper solvent to clean off the surface - do it before you sandblast/sandpaper and again after. I also like to finish off any metal work with a phosphoric acid wipe/rinse prior to painting. This is the stuff we know as "metl-prep" for autobody and a similar product is provided through poly fiber for etching metal. I think the polyfiber product also uses a bit of hydrofloric acid in their metal etch product. Good luck. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: kurt schrader <smokey_bear_40220@yahoo.com> Hi Brian, Makes me sad too. Selling the new plane and sticking with the old..... What will you do for fun without your Fox? You could stay on the list and watch us argue over tail wheel spring tension again. :-) And don't you know that the U-2 is being replaced by large scale model planes? No career potential there. ;-) And we have SkyStar-2 just around the corner. Our modern, high performance plane. Well, more fun anyway. Honestly, you brought us reality in graphic and mathametical form for all this time. We wish you could stay and play some more. And what a great Fox! I have to climb to at least 10,000 feet to get that true speed. Oh, sorry. That is a descent for a U-2 pilot..... U-2 nap-of-the-earth at FL 10. Gonna' miss you. Stay safe over there. Oh, and I agree with the leaflet drops, but do them over New York, Calif and the other terrorist support centers. Save a few for the Conspiracy News Network, Gay B C, See, BS, and No Body Cares networks too. Without them, terrorism would be a local event with little impact on the rest of us. After all, it is just advertising thru violence and if no body carried it and no minds would be changed, why would they do it? Thank you for serving us all here and there. Kurt S.
