Well, another Kitfox left the ground today for the first time. My Series 5
TD ZK-RJA took to the air just 2 hours back and it flew like a DREAM!! I
had to do a second circuit as I was so over the world I didn't sort of take
it in...The engine being a self modified EA 81 Turbo EFI with own made PSRU
was the mysterious bit but it went well too. So big check over tomorrow.

John,
Double congratulations to you man! That is great that you built the airplane
and the engine and PSRU! Tell us more about the plane and the flight. I bet
you are still up in the air, even though your feet are on the ground.

Congratulations, John! Many happy flights with your new bird!
The funny thing is that, during the past three years I have been on this list,
I read about all the problems people have and yet, when they start flying, they
all experience a fantastic plane that flies like a dream. So I have decided
to let people believe that I am a brave pilot who flies a very difficult taildragger,
prone to ground loop and all kind of problems ... knowing that, in reality,
I have a kind, easy and very funny plane! But ... shtttt! Don't tell my
admirers! :-)
Cheers,
Michel

Good report, Paul! You only forgot one thing: If I can find my position so accurately,
here in Norway, and for free, it is thanks to the US DoD and the American
tax-payers who pay and maintain the GPS system. Thank you, America!

Exactly. The program PocketFMS even let you adjust your known altitude from the
PDA. But then, if you land somewhere else ... It's a bit like the problem of
setting the altimeter to QNH and fly somewhere else, with a different barometric
pressure.

You can make a claim via the mails, but US laws favor the personal appearance in
that judges court on that time and date of the individual, or his agent (hired
attorney or person[s]), to stake your claim against any monies or material
assets that they (Skystar) are admitting to. And even then the judge can rule
against or only allow a percentage of the 'claim' to be heard or allowed.......
Good luck, but unless the Skystar people[s] are upfront and honest you might
as well kiss your money or orders good bye.............that is what bankruptcy
is all about - getting out from under their obligations.

These "additional satellites" are actually on the ground! The
transmission picked up by your GPS receiver does come from the
satellites, of course. From the Garmin web site:

Hello folks,
I've been reading this GPS string with interest since it started and
there's an error question that has come up. I'd like to inform you of a couple
of
things I've viewed on TV about it.
1. They are measuring the shift of the Earth's plates with it for earthquake
studies. This is measuring much less change than 10 meters, and that is also
in altitude as the earth's plates rise and fall at their edges and this is a
factor they look at.
2. Did you know they make a remote control for R/C airplanes that can be
programed using GPS to fly a path? this thing uses altitude too.
Just some things I happened on for you to think about in regard to this
thread.

Amazing, isn't it, Jeff?
Yet we have to differentiate between absolute and relative positioning.
Until the satellites came to exist, maps were drawn from positions
derived solely from a sextant and a chronometer. Each country has its
own co-ordinates standard. With the GPS came the WGS-84 standard. To
adapt to satellite navigation, maritime charts have now a correction
table, sometimes up to 200 yards offset - as I experienced here, in
Norway.
Before the GPS, I sailed with a Decca receiver, a British technology
invented for the D-day, in 1944. While not being too accurate in
absolute position (i.e. the latitude and longitude) it was accurate
within a few yards to repetition (relative position), which enabled me
e.g. to put fishing pots at sea, then come back the day later, and pick
them up, from my previously plotted position, even in the thickest fog.
Likewise, if you use a reference point, the GPS can put you within
maybe less than a yard from where you were previously. This technology
is used e.g. by the Norwegian snow ploughs working in the mountains,
keeping the passes between the east and west country open at all time.
But they have first to drive all the way, on a nice day, plot their
track, and come back when it snows and everything is whited out. Note
that they also use differential GPS, i.e. a correction from a known
place is constantly transmitted.
Cheers,
Michel

Mike
Mike your statement -- (These "additional satellite" are actually on the
ground!) -- is probably confusing for some. A better clarification may be
that, the GPS system is monitored by 25 ground systems. The information
gleamed on the ground is then forwarded to two synchronous satellites which
in turn with the ground monitor stations create a correction message. Your
WAAS enabled GPS then receives and applies this correction factor to the
data it receives from the orbiting constellation of GPS satellites. Ergo,
now you have very precise nav info in areas where there are ground monitors
and coverage by the two WAAS synchronous satellites.

Don,
That's about $10,000 more than I paid for my 912S last 3 months ago. Has to
be a typo.

My take on the last batch of paper I got (which sounds like what Paul got)
is that someone went in and found that his kit was almost ready to ship,
with his name on parts and boxes. He is saying that since he paid the money
(thank goodness he hadn't paid them all of the almost $70,000 he had agreed
to buy from them!), he has the right to the parts and not the bankruptcy
court. So he is therefore asking for the court to release the parts to him
instead of including them in Skystar's fire sale. I could be wrong but this
is what it looked like to me in "nonlawyerspeak" terms. Just for interest
sake, there are almost 170 personal (builders) names on the list.

Mine is the 912ULS, That would be a big differance between the 912S though.
Do they actually sell any 912S's at that price?

Subject: | Change of Operating Limitations |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Lynn Matteson <lynnmatt@jps.net>
I got to looking at the 25-NM circle that was allowed me, based on
where my plane is located, and now realize that it puts me under part
of the Mode C veil of Detroit Metro Airport. This would have deprived
me of 19% of the geographical area in which I could test fly. Not only
that, but it meant that the airport at which I am getting flight
lessons would have been 10 miles out of the circle. I called the FAA,
and they said that I could change the "base of operations" to a
different location, which would get rid of a lot of the Mode C veil,
and allow me to move further to the west, enabling me and my test pilot
to get more time together, as well as have one more fuel stop, should
the need occur. All I had to do was outline the request, citing the
need for safety, less congestion, and greater access for all concerned
(me and the test pilot), and send it in. So far, I'm pretty impressed
with those that I've dealt with at the local FAA.
