Kurt and I are planning to meet each other while at Sun n Fun Thursday.
I see on the SnF website that WiFi is available there. If anyone who may
already be there should read this message please advise of an easily
defined location or method you are aware of to use as a meeting point.
At this time we are going to use cell phones to communicate and pick a
location once we are there. It would be nice if all Kitfoxers had an
idea where we might likely encounter each other. Like, will there be a
Kitfox tiedown area? Is there a vendor there that is a KF enthusiast we
could coordinate with? Any other ideas?

I installed the vg's just in front of the screws that held down the windscreen,
just in front of the turdle deck. I spaced them 1.5 inches apart, will have
to go to the plane and count them.

I bought a KF 2, beautifully built that came with a fantastic fully
enclosed
trailer.... I hanger the plane so I stored the trailer.
The builder went all out with this trailer. Has a remote controlled winch
to
pull plane in, lights, alarm system, built in dehumidifier, tracks to
guide
plane safely in, carpeted, insulated, and even an internal air pump for
tires and fuel .....
There are 3, 5 gallon jerry cans with fittings. What you do is, fill the
cans, then when ready to fuel plane, simply add air pressure hook up hose
and
with can on ground, fuel plane. The hose has a valve, so its like going to
a
gas station. Very convenient! Much easier than holding a 5 gallon can over
wing and hose is much lighter than at an airport.....
PS since I dont use it.... for sale...

This is a good report Mike. My turtle deck has always had a slight
vibration at cruise and possibly the VGs would minimize that. Do you plan
on placing pictures on Sportflight? I'm sure most of us would be interested
in looking at them.

> I went and saw a friend at spokane international yesterday and he helped
me put some vg's on the back of the windscreen to help the effects of the
air coming off and onto the turdledeck. Well I hardly ever use the flaps
and to gain access to this area I pull full flaps on and went to work. We
spaced the vg's 1.5 inches apart with the 15 degree angles. When I went to
take off I was cleared for a 21@f departure with the winds at 120@13, I
thought not a problem, then I called for departure and the tower asked if I
wanted to take off 03 because the winds changed to 090@15, I said I'll take
21 anyway, noticing that the sock was pretty much going all over the place
and the one at the beginning of 21 was still at a cross, which was closer to
where I was. I pull on the runway and put full power and was amazed at how
quick the tail came up and pulled back on the stick and shot up in the air.
Soon, well very soon I was up higher than normal, then I had a hard down
stick, so I put!
> on up trim, thinking I did something with the vg's I called the tower to
land on 07 and climbed up to 1000ft agl, turning was tough and then I
thought, oh crap the flaps are on, I put the flaps back off and things
normalized. What did I learn, the biggest, take off with full flaps is way
cool. Next, do my check list with flaps off for take off, but then again
having the flaps on full really make a nice cool take off, just don't forget
to take them off. I did stick around and did a few touch and go's, kind of
cool doing a landing on 07 at the same time a 737 is landing on 21. I did
do a high speed run and one direction I got 105knts(gps). this was a down
wind for 07 and on final I was doing 94knts, Which put me right over the
approach for 07 @ 2000agl, way cool, slipped down to land, droped like a
rock. Need to make more test on top speed, but I do believe there was an
increase of at least 5mph by installing the vg's to the back of the
windscreen to turdledeck.

I used the 0200 cowl that Skystar sold. I shortened the bottom half by
about four inches where it attaches to the fuselage. Then cut the top
cowl into about four inches in front of the firewall and removed four
inches there. I glued the piece I removed to the bottom of the piece in
front of the windscreen, just in front of the firewall. This gave me a
place to fasten the rest of the cowl on with cam locks. Now I can
remove the engine cover with out removing the part over the
instruments. In other words a boot cowl. I can take a picture if
anyone is interested. Norm

The company at Osh promoting lightweight turbine engines was Innodyn WWW.inndodyn.com
And I dont believe they burn 11gph at idle, their website says the following:
How much fuel do the Turbines burn?
On development turbines our fuel flow, tested by measuring the amount of fuel used
in the tanks, was comparable to, but slightly higher than internal combustion
engines. Measured in all phases of operation with the RV4 and SuperCub, we
found in general, our fuel usage to be approximately 7 gallons per 100 hp per
hour. This is internal historical data and has not been independently tested
or verified. We continue our efforts to gather additional fuel usage data from
independent testing and evaluation. Until we have completed this detailed testing
on our first full production engines, we cannot provide precise fuel flow
rates. We will be conducting detailed integrated testing on fuel flow and associated
hp ratings in the near future. Please check back frequently as we will
make this further defined information available as soon as testing is completed.
Definitely seems like the future of experimental will be turbine. Especially since
they can burn Diesel, Bio-Diesel, Jet A or kerosene.

I'm nearing completion of my flight training and I still need to do a night
cross country. Only problem is that my model 4 does not have landing lights.
I've read that some people are installing landing lights in the cowling.
Anyone have details or picture? Is there an easier way to do this?

On my fox, the rotax only has 18amps for the charging system. I do have the wing
tip set up for a landing light, but took it out because it took too much amps.
The landing light could put you over. I never worry about the light. In fact
when I went through training, the light never worked on the 172 I flew, so
I got along without it. Now days I land all the time without it and do just
fine. You sure learn to atripulate the runway between the runway lights.

I suppose you can always go and get one of those spot lights and plug it into the
accessory, open the door and shine it down at the runway, or better yet take
a passenger and let them do it. Ha ha. :D

If anyone is in need of a 1967 PA28-140 with gap seals, performance wing
tips, VG's, fresh annual, good nav/com, AT150, external power, auto fuel
STC, Whelen strobes, and a new engine let me know off list. It is
straight with no damage history, no liens but is butt ugly in need of
paint and interior, and priced well below book because of it.

Hmm. Didn't occur to me that the stock Rotax setup wouldn't have enough juice.
Does it hurt the alternator if you go a little over budget on the amps or will
it just draw from the battery?

Lynn,
I think re measuring the conductivity of the funnel you will find no
reading on an ordinary multimeter reading ohms. You will need an instrument called
a megger. This actually measures the ohms resistance using about 500 volts
whereas a multimeter is between 1.5 and 9 volts. The 500 volts needed to get
your reading is OK as you are aren't going to get a spark at low voltage occuring
in your filling situation. Also be prepared that the reading will probaly
be fairly high ohms. Again this is ok as it only needs to bleed, fairly quickly,
off the voltage. [ static build up ]
I just thought I'd point this out before everyone meaured their conducting funnels
with a multimeter and got no reading and worried about it.

The Corviar 164cid is rated at 100hp. I won't swear that is. If you
have never checked the site and are really interested go here.
http://www.flycorvair.com/ <http://www.flycorvair.com/> This
is where I started. There is a lot of information there. I can be of
help with what I did to make mine fit the Fox.
I am still doing some of those late minute things, but looking to be in
the air again late this week or early next. Keep in touch.
Norm.

The company I talked to used the Solar T-62 engine.
Garrett also makes a small one. If you Google the
Solar T-62, you will find a lot of talk about it.
The company I spoke to said theirs burned from 11-17
GPH for up to 100 hp. Not what I wanted witht he
short range it had. I think they gave up too much to
save weight.
The engine is capable of up to 150 hp and weighs less
than 60 lbs without a GB, but the GB's applied can add
up to 100 lbs more though, depending on who is
building what.
I think the BD-5 used a T-62 as a pure jet.
Here are a couple of sites that talk about
applications for small turbos as examples:
http://www.zenithair.com/misc/turbine-power.html
http://www.auctionaz.com/092305aircraft1947.htm
Rotaway is also testing a 150 hp turbine, last I
heard.

A friend of mine ran the battery on a C-182 dead in
flight by having all the lights, bells and whistles on
in the touch and go pattern. He had to land by light
signals and run up the battery again before the radio
would work for taxi back.
You will probably be running off the battery for
descent and landing with the light on, but turning it
off after takeoff will allow a recharge, if you keep
the average amps + , or you'll need a backup battery
or hand held radio.
Running the battery down is not a good thing to do
with electronic ignition.

Subject: | Re: What do I do if no part of my fule system is grounded? |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: kurt schrader <smokey_bear_40220@yahoo.com>
It is actually recommended to have some resistance
from the tank to ground so that the electricity can
"drain" rather than arc to ground. Some people add a
resister in their tank to ground wire for this reason.
The previous reply about the funnel having resistance
correctly accomplishes that.
I would think that grounding the funnel and touching
the plane somewhere other than the tank neck first, or
to the outside of the neck is better than just popping
it in and pouring fuel.
The point is to get the plane's tank, the funnel, the
fuel and the filler tank to the same electric
potential somewhere other than where fumes are
present.
