I have found that I can land better at night by turning the landing light off.
It may be use full for taxi operations. I used an automotive light assembly because
it was smaller and required less power to operate. As a result it is does
not have the output or deflection angle of a true aircraft landing light. This
is the compromise that I felt was necessary when building. Even with its reduced
power requirements it still exceeds what my Rotax 912 can handle.

I'm nearing completion of my flight training and I still need to do a night
cross country. Only problem is that my model 4 does not have landing lights.
I've read that some people are installing landing lights in the cowling. Anyone
have details or picture? Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks for reminding me, Rex, that I took the readings the other day
and wrote them down on a scrap of paper and promptly shuffled the paper
under other scraps near my computer station. : )
My readings were somewhat scrambled on my Craftsman AutoRanging
MultiMeter (digital...about $80)....one of these days I'll get a
Fluke..I won't know what to do with it, but it'll look impressive to
those that know.
Anyway, the readings I got were in the neighborhood of 22K-150K ohms,
and occasionally bounced up to 1.3M ohms. I was going to report this
and became distracted by helping out on another project, and forgot.

Very nice Clint. I've always wondered about landing lights that are
connected directly to the engine. Do you have any problems with light bulbs
burning out due vibration? Do you have a part number for it?

I found an interesting funnel in the auto store today. It's metal with an integrated,
two foot long, articulated metal spout attached to the end. If I have
enough fuel in the tank that the spout will touch it when sitting in the filler
neck then grounding the funnel should ground out all the fuel in the tank right?
Then all I have to do is make sure that the fuel in the gas can has no charge
and I should be good to go right?

I take this to mean that they averaged out cruise with taxi and landing ops. So
how long did they have to sit on the tarmac at idle to get these numbers? Sneaky
bastards. :-)

The very small driving light from J.C. Whitney has two screws on each side.
It is safety wired and double insulated from the oil cooler. It uses one
quartz halagan 57w bulb. I was worried about vibration and breaking the
filament but been on there for over 500 hours. Clint

Keep us posted on your progress. I have searched the web and you are
the only builder of a Corvair Fox so close to flying and sharing their
experience. Your photographs on Sportflight are also the only ones I've
ever found of a Corvair Fox. Now that's experimental aviation! Thanks.

Hi Jay~ I would be interested in your kitfox at the right price... I'm from
Anchorage Alaska and have been looking for a KF for a while now. There is one
up here for sale now for 30K but I've continued to look cause I don't trust
the car dealer owner. There's also a 3/4 built one w/ a 582 engine for just 12K
but I want the 912 or would even prefer the 912s w/floats and skiis. Please
let me know more about your KF and what extras it has. Sent pics if you can
...does it have ferrings ...what is the cruse speed ...empty weight and useful
load???? I assume it's around 600lbs.... also is it the model 4 or the classic
4... does the landing gear have the bungie system? I don't know what else
to ask but fill me i n as best you can!! You can call if you like. ph: 907-677-1116
Thanks Layne Cropper

Yes Lynn,
Math IS fun! It is a language you can play with.
I tried to do my Fox cruise in Mach #'s, but my wiz
wheel doesn't go that low.
Could have done it in "sublight speeds" to impress,
but that requires negative exponents. Still could
sound impressive. You know, something like:
"Yup. She cruises at 3.284 times the speed of light
to the minus 28th power!"
Sounds impressive. Might really be the speed of a
sleeping snail's blood flow, but who's to know? Maybe
we could work it out sometime for real. Then all us
Foxers can add,
"No really, my Fox goes that fast!" when people look
at you with disbelief.
This near to the earth we are so close to suborbital
velocity anyway! :-) In a good wind we can actually
achive Synchronous Orbit! (As in zero ground speed)

You guys know how to talk dirty! In Norway, we have simplified math.
It goes like this: One, two, three, many. Simple, isn't it? E.g. three
plus one is ... many. Many plus many is ... still many.
Cheers,
Michel

I am going to start covering my IV now, but since skystar is out of buisness, i
am looking for all the service bulletins for my Kitfox IV (kit from 1994). I
found several links for different service bulletins, but all is linked to Skystar
(links is dead). If somebody has service bulletins for the IV, or tell me
where i can download it, i probably would sleep better:-).
I better check out if there is any SB=A8s i need to do before covering the aircraft.
thanks

Don't you just divide the Challenger speed, say 50 mph (smile) by the speed
of sound at sea level and a standard day,,,,what ever that is, which might
be about .1 mach Bob U.

Greetings,
getting ready to change rudder cable on a Speedster. Is there an advantage in going
with 1/8" SS over 3/16" or is it an overkill?

I am going to start covering my IV now, but since skystar is out of
buisness, i am looking for all the service bulletins for my Kitfox IV (kit
from 1994). I found several links for different service bulletins, but all
is linked to Skystar (links is dead). If somebody has service bulletins for
the IV, or tell me where i can download it, i probably would sleep
better:-).
I better check out if there is any SB=A8s i need to do before covering the
aircraft.
thanks

My experience has been "NEVER USE A METAL FUNNEL" when fueling from plastic
gas cans to a metal filler cap. I saw sparks and decided that there is
definitely no future in that arrangement. I now use a plastic funnel and
have had no problems.

Bob (aka Rube Mathburg),
Would it be ok to report .80 mach since the prop tip
speed is about that? At least some part of a fox is
near the speed of sound! :-0
Oh, forgot. The exhaust may exceed mach one. That is
why it is so noisy.
Thanks to Rex, the conversion page makes the
Challenger's 50 mph about .066 mach. My S-5 can hit
140 mph or .184 mach! Now that is truckin'!

Rex,
Got my Fox hat. Got your number. Expect to be there
around noon and start scouting.
Got your web site too. Great one! Now I know my 140
mph VNE Fox can hit 208.8 times e-9 speed of light!

Michel,
We could go on and on with this one, like how do women
buy shoes, or what size was that fish I caught
yesterday? Or how long does winter last in Norway?
But I got to go to Sun&Fun tomorrow, so I am moving
way past "do not archive" to "do not post" until I am
back. See you all after Shangrala
