Hi Jimmie.
Do you have a primer in your fuel line system? This really helps when
starting, cold.
Do you hand prop about six to eight swings. Actually these are not swings
they are rotating the crank a couple of times. (normal rotation direction and all
electric off)? Do this with the fuel valve/s open, to draw fuel to the pump..
Do you have a glass/transparent fuel filter right before the mechanical pump?
This way, when hand propping you can see if the fuel is on it's way to the
mechanical pump.
With the 912, close the throttle and pull the choke. I understand if you use
the throttle,the choke will not function.

Hi Jimmie,
This sounds like what my 912 did before I started pre-heating it on cold days.
(<40 F)
My problem was that the battery installed on tha plane was not able to turn the
prop fast enough for the mags to fire the plugs. Jumping the plane with a car
battery did the trick.
Since then I've been pre-heating the engine with a 10 heater on a stand from fleet
farm. That does the trick nicely!
With the engine pre-heated the plane battery is able to start the engine with ease.
If it was a cold day I highly recommend pre-heating. It's easier on the engine,
the frame, everything.
I don't recommend pre-heating the engine at all times though, only a few hours
before planned use. I'm told that if you pre-heat all the time, then whole engine
might not be the same temp and you can get moisture forming.

It takes a fast starter RPM to start my 912. If I have a weak battery, I
start it with my 10 amp charger connected. It always starts quickly this
way, but after warming the engine for a minute, I need to shut down and
disconnect the charger. My understanding is that when the starter doesn't
turn fast enough, there is a slight kickback between compression strokes
that is not visible and that will keep it from starting. Usually a new
battery about every two years keeps it starting OK.
Starting by pulling the prop works good too. It's best to have it tied down
or someone to hold the brakes. It will not usually start by pulling through
just one compression stroke. Pull through two quick compression strokes
(about 1/3 prop circle). Wear gloves, pulling the back edge of the prop is
hard on the hands.

That's an AN part that's rosette welded into the end
of the lift strut. That a really critical part and I
don't know the AN part number. Someone (named
John...) :
) with access to the Skystar liftstrut
fabrication drawings might be able to help.

A friend and I were headed to my hangar yesterday, when I spotted 3
planes sitting at Napoleon Airport (3NP). The Napoleon Cafe nearby is a
lure for the "$100 hamburger" or breakfast, and I wanted to see what
that red airplane was that was sitting furthest from the road...the
lead sleds in front of it didn't interest me. When I got closer, I saw
the distinctive flaperons, then took closer notice of the tail....sure
enough, it was a Kitfox Model 7 (I had guessed it was a 5, because I'm
not that aware yet of the differences) I was sure that it was
Rotax-powered because of the way the pilot was propping it over to
check the oil, and the strange sound as the prop was turned....I'm not
ripping on Rotax's mind you...not THIS time anyway. What I found really
interesting was the fact that the pilot, Don Zimmerman, told me that
this plane was one of the group of 12 kits bought by an Idaho group,
and that he had bought it out there and it now lives in Plymouth, MI. I
told him that I had seen an article in a magazine (maybe Kitplanes?)
relating to that group.
He was elated when I told him of the news about John and Debra taking
over the reins of Skystar, and hollered to his flying buddies to tell
them about the news.
Just another day in the continuing Kitfox history....

When starting my engine I always had trouble with the carb on the right side falling
off. Since I've gone to this way of starting, I haven't had no trouble
with the carb and it starts with no troubles. I agree with the engine heat, but
I can start mine down to 25 degrees f. Without any trouble. what I do is
first, turn the prop over at least once to make sure that it isn't hydrolic locked.
Second, make sure you have a choke hooked up for both carbs. Now this
is very important, keep the mags OFF, and crank the engine to a count of 11 if
it's colder than 35, about a count of 8 if it's warmer than35, and normal starting
in the summer a count of 4(the counts are about 1 second intervals). Also
make sure the throttle is as closed off as possible, grab the control and pull
on it to make sure, lock it in place. Next, wait a few seconds and turn the
mags on, push the throttle in slightly to have an Rpm of 2000 to 2200(questimate)
Lock the throttle down good, and start the engine, be ready on the choke(that's
why you lock down the throttle), if the engine is a little rough, quickly
pull out the choke, as soon as it smooths out release the choke.
Also very important to have a good battery, mine is an oddesy.
Also make sure the carbs are good and clean and adjusted proper.

I was one of the pilots that took the plane to Don Zimmerman, and the
one that took him to some back country airstrips while he was out here
before we delivered his plane. It was the first plane our group built.
There were enough experienced builders in the group that it did not have
the learning curve areas on it. It is a really nice plane. Don is a
great guy. We see a lot of Kitfox's out here, but back there it is a
real attraction.

Just bought a Kitfox model 1 #23.
Had to put new engine in it, 503/ with Hegar cog belt drive,GCS 68" prop,set at
8 degrees. When we did the test flight it makes a noise like a helicopter wah,
wah, wah, wah.
Was wondering if anyone had experienced this , and if so could tell me what it
might be.

is anywhere near 2:1; what's yours? Some of the Hegar redrives had serious problems,
like the belt tension adjustment letting go leaving the pilot without
a fan to keep him cool.

Hey guys,
Just got back fronm SnF sunday... Very disappointing on the KF front... I too did
see the older KF sitting on the trailer and saw one fly off... But, other than
that, I saw no older kitfoxes as I searched the whole flyin..
What gives??
Next year, I will bring mine..we need a much better turn out!!

Thanks Ted and Shorty. If I decide to replace the bolt rather than use a
threaded tube, is there a particular strength that I need to replace it
with and do I simply cut the end off the lift strut and weld the new
bolt on?. Does anyone have a preference for the way of doing this task?
I can see how critical it is and how precise the fitting will need to
be. The load on the bolt is obviously significant so has anyone done the
calculations for the model 1V to see how much load is on each bolt? As

That's an AN part that's rosette welded into the end
of the lift strut. That a really critical part and I
don't know the AN part number. Someone (named
John...) :
) with access to the Skystar liftstrut
fabrication drawings might be able to help.

I'm back now too. Must have packed 2 years worth of
reading materials back with me. :-) Picked up an oil
thermostat from Lockwood and Rex effectively talked me
into a battery minder too. Guess this means I'll need
AC power to my hangar now.
Rex and I got a good look at the EuroFox and saw some
interesting details. The wing tank caps are almost
flush with the cap having only a raised ridge where
the vent pipe comes out of. The ridge is fore and
aft, so streamlined, but gives a good grip for opening
like a large wingnut. It would require a new tank
filler neck with the cap, so it is not easily
retrofitted.
The flapperons are solid with no entry or drains, so
no problem with gas desolving the foam or rain water
getting in. The flapperon spar looked to be attached
with adel clamps on bearings with the area around the
holes completely sealed. Not sure if the adel clamp
is a good idea, but the rest looked good.
Flapperon weights were in a round pipe sticking
forward and down instead of our weights at the end.
The turtledeck formed a straight line to the tail
instead of a down and then aft line like on my S-5.
Looked less draggy.
The rest looked very Fox like with an S-4 type stab
and trim tabs.
RLSA said they would not provide a source for parts to
our Fox's, but ideas are free.
The yellow Fox that came and went was a S-4 with 912,
I believe. I didn't copy more info than that.
There were 4 planes with Corvair engines parked near
the Yellow Fox. The KR-2 had the cowl off and I got a
couple of pics, if anyone was interested in a corvair
installation. I think the builder told me it was
about 210 lbs installed. Seems heavy for a KR-2.
It was very dry there this year. A parked car set
fire to the grass and burned up 23 cars total. For
once the smoke and major damage was ground
transportation and not planes.

Since you are all filling time and space.... consider
this:
Einstein figured that as you approach the speed of
light, time slows down. At the speed of light, time
stops. Therefore a light beam travels its complete
distance, even if all the way across the universe, in
no time, ie, from the light's point of view, it is
everywhere at once.
Kinda' God-like. Or, "Let there be light" wasn't too
far off of being very important to our understanding
of the universe. We should consider more about what
the universe looks like at the speed of light to get a
better understanding in my opinion.
Einstein also figured that the amount of energy needed
to approach the speed of light goes up dramatically
and reaches infinity at light speed. To go faster
would require infinite energy, plus a little more.
The again, my double D flashlight doesn't have that
much of a kick when I turn it on, so there may be some
loopholes in the theory?
