I beg to differ, my friend. While definitively "outside my league"
this exchange of ideas between Al, Kurt and others, is certainly
interesting (although off-topic Kitfox, of course). While it will not
change our everyday's life, it is a honour we do to our brain, to use
it in any thinkable way, even if it hurts. No pain, no gain, right?
Personally, I strongly feel that the mystery of the universe is
somewhat easy to explain in a global concept. Only that we can't "see"
it because our brain has, through evolution, been optimised for other
tasks like, finding food, finding a mate, surviving. I think that
talking about the "four spacial dimensions" on the internet and share
it with people on different continents is already a feast of
intelligence we can be proud of. It is much better than prejudice,
bigotry and ethnocentrism. Won't you agree?
Cheers,
Michel

I have noticed on the list from time to time that some people are using Odyssey
batteries in their K/F. Can anyone tell me what model they have, and does it
fit the M4 battery box? also is the higher charge rate a problem? Thanks, Don

Hello Don,
When I changed my ageing 582 for a Jabiru 2200, one year ago, I was
told that I needed a stronger battery and I was recommended the Odyssey
PC 680. It wouldn't fit the battery box on the firewall of my model 3
but I found a smart place for it, right behind the seats. I also need
to slightly move my CG because the Jabiru (with oil cooler, heatbox,
etc) was slightly heavier than the 582. It did the trick!
I am very pleased with the battery. I spins my engine to the required
300 RPM even at sub-zero OAT. Note that since it is a dry cell battery,
you can install in in any way you want. A battery box is not necessary
as it will never leak.
Cheers,
Michel

Don,
I am having great luck with an Odessy PC 625 on my 912S. I think the
coldest that I have started it was about 15 F. Works reall well. I got the
recommendations from this list.
Like Michel says, it doesn't need a box and can be mounted in any position.
I just strapped it to the firewall with some SS straps.

You might try Powersonic (#12180NB) for $31 -has
served me well for 3 years.

Here's a thought:
Would you consider organizing a cooperative effort whereby we get some
number of people (say 20 people) to send you $200, and you make as many as
you can for the $4000 and hold them in stock. You could then sell them for
$450 to the stakeholders for as long as they lasted. In other words, the
$200 gives the stakeholders the peace of mind they have access to the
modules if needed.
If you sell all the modules, you have the money to go out and make a bunch
more.
If you or nobody else wanted to, I would volunteer to hold them in my
companies Parts Store as parts inventory if you didn't want to.
Some details still to figure out, but you get my drift.

Hello Steve:
Thanks for your above reply. I appreciate the thought and suggestion and I
gave it a couple of days of consideration. However, I am an old-fashioned
guy; I design,
produce and sell, cash on the barrel head; have done business that way all
my life and I don't want to change now.
Please let my know if you are still interested.
By the way, I have posted a photo of my ignition isolation unit on my web
site, under photo gallery, last row.

Subject: | Interesting day at the airstrip |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Lynn Matteson <lynnmatt@jps.net>
My test pilot had an interesting day flying today, and was lucky enough
to bring it home safely. He encountered a smell, like heated rubber, or
paint burning, while flying at about 2000' over the airfield. He
landed, we looked, and found nothing amiss. Thinking it was probably
the muffler losing its' "virginity" after 18 hours, he went up again,
flew some more and landed...no problem, we thought. Later on, he
noticed lack of power on takeoff, and aborted. I saw that the EGT span
was over 600 degrees F, and rising. This related to a lost cylinder in
my book. I switched the EIS to read all four exhaust gas temps, and
found that cyl. #4 on my Jabiru 2200 was the low one. Removing the cowl
we found 3 spark plug wires had come out of the distributor caps...2
wires to #4, and one wire to another plug on the other cap (2
distributor caps on the Jabiru). We plugged them back in, and all was
well again. He took off, and flew for another little while, then put
the plane away. Sitting back and thinking things over, I noticed one
"tail" pipe out of the muffler was missing. Pulling the upper and lower
cowling revealed that the exhaust heat was hitting the lower tubes of
the engine mount, cooking the paint off, and also had burned the outer
layer of rubber off the fire sleeve protecting the fuel supply to the
engine's mechanical fuel pump...this was at the firewall pass-through
fitting. When the new muffler is replaced, I will build a protective
shield to protect any future exhaust failures, as well as reinforced
tubing junctures, and a better hanging system to support any weight
that might be subject to vibration and subsequent failures.
I don't think that either incident had any bearing on the other, but in
retrospect, we should have pulled both cowls and given it a closer
going over...I damn sure will next time, and I'm happy to report that
there will be a next time.
This could have been a "bad day at Black Rock"

All,
I'm trying to find out what needs to be safety wired. I'm running
a KIV-1200 with 582 C box. Right now the only things safety wired are the
prop and the gearbox fills and drains. I remember seeing race cars with
literally everything safety wired. I checked AC 43-13 and though it told me
how to safety wire, it didn't say what. (It does, though, show how to
safety AN fittings. Should I safety all fuel connections?)
Thanks,
Guy Buchanan
K-IV 1200 / 582 / 99.9% done, thanks mostly to Bob Ducar.
