Kurt S.
Corrupt = R. Insane =D.
Corruption = a couple of years behind bars. (don't drop the soap now) and you
come back to society cured? Probably more corrupt after spending time with
that crowd.
Insanity = a couple of years being looked after by good people in white
coats. (again, don't drop the soap) and you come back all fresh and clean and are
you cured? As long as you know right from wrong and there is no corruption
lingering. You should be good to go

Gentlemen, I am not certain I understand what you are talking about but I beg you
to consider this: To blame the government is a worldwide occupation as old
as mankind. But the democracy's worst enemy is political indifference. We, who
are so lucky to have the freedom of speech, should use it have our voice of discontent
heard, but in a civil way.
May the spirit of pacific philosophy guide your endeavours for ever,

Subject: | Fitting the Windscreen on KF IV |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Colin Durey" <colin@ptclhk.com>
Hi Guys!,
Making steady progress with the build of my KF IV, and am presently trying
to fit the windscreen.
Bending the screen down at the front is fine, but when I start pushing it
back on the sides to make it meet the upper door pillars, I get very
aprehensive at the look of the compound curve that forms near the wing
attach point. There seems to be an awfull lot of tension there. I have not
been brave enough to try and push the sides all the way back - I have
visions a large crack appearing across the curve accompanied by a loud
snapping sound.
Are there any tips to doing this successfully? Is it OK to use a hot air
gun to try and ease the Lexan into the curve? Are there any long term
negative effects from using heat?

The Polycarbonate that was used a few years ago was Bison, not Lexan. Maybe
there is no difference in formulation, but this is what worked for me.The
Bison worked quite well for that application, but it is best to cut a circle
as large as you can it that point and still have it covered by the nose
fairing. I found it best to do it on a really hot day or in a very warm
shop. After situating it the way I wanted,I VERY carefully warmed the whole
area(8"R?) w/ the heat gun. If you watch carefully you will see it begin to
relax. That is the time to stop.
My corners crazed eventually but by now it is time to replace it as it is
scratched from use and hazed from getting some petrol product on it. I got
8years and 400+ hours on mine,FWIIW. Larry Huntley

The guy that built mine built a hot box and heated the entire window to
about 185, letting it droop into place under it's own weight. First he
drilled and fastened the skylight portion of the window. He also fabricated
a female receiver for the bottom forward edge by splashing off the cowl.
(It was a crescent shaped carbon angle, about 2" wide.) Then he removed all
the covering paper and plastic. He covered the entire window with soft
cloth, felt or pile. He covered all that with space blankets taped at the
edges, leaving a hole in the bottom to which he attached some dryer tube.
The dryer tube had a crude deflector at the outlet so hot air would
disperse. At the other end of the dryer tube he loosely attached a heat gun
so cool would be inducted with the hot. He used some thermocouples to check
the internal temperature. Since his hot box was soft he was able to help
mold the window into place as it sagged. Once it had sagged close to
position he wrapped the windscreen against the bottom form and clamped the
sides to the frame. He then re-bagged and re-heated for some period. (I'm
not sure how long.) I have an extra-thick window, about .11", and it's
nicely formed.

Just to throw another log in the fire (no pun intended), I mounted my
Odyssey Homebuilders 680 (Aircraft Spruce p/n 11-02233) battery on the
firewall side, lower right side of aircraft, but I have Jabiru 2200
power. Even with my recent lost exhaust/tail pipe, and flames licking
the firewall 4" off center toward the battery, I had no battery
problems. A scorched fire sleeve, burned paint on the engine mount, and
a slightly warped airbox (fiberglas), the battery, secure in it's
(Aircraft Spruce p/n 11-01853) mounting box, suffered no damage...just
some soot on the box. Did I get all the sponsors in? Sorry...I've been
watching too much Nascar. : )

Well, I almost got it right John. I should have asked
the oil experts for their opinion here.
What is the best oil temp range?
My oil temps are 210-230F (99-110C) in warm weather
and down to 140F in cold. I would like to keep them
at 190-210F myself, so I got the oil thermostat, but
need a little more cooling too. My temp is taken at
the pan, so I expect the oil temp to go higher,
especially thru the turbo, and boil the water off,
then cool.
The turbo is over 400F after shutdown and I worry
about the oil that sits in it gumming up the works.
Maybe an electric oil pump to keep it circulating
after shutdown would be useful. But then we dont see
any of this in automotive use that I know of.
Just thinking.....

Yes, good topic, wrong forum. I am not going there on
this list. Anyone want to discuss any topic with me
directly can, no problem. But we are hardly able to
resolve KitFox motor wars here, let alone politics.
;-)
I am probably the most guilty of starting this off
topic stuff just to interject some fun, so I better
make amends and say let us respect the list for what
it is and what it is not.
I will now self-inflict several wounds....

G'day Colin, great to hear your up to the windscreen. That must mean the
engines in and a goer. I fitted the screen on my Model 1 without problems
and that model has a tighter turn onto the skylight than the latter madels.
If you want to have a yarn, give me a call. The advice your getting
regarding applying heat is a question I have had for a while myself and I
will be interested in the results because I will be fitting a new one
shortly also. Got any pikies yet??.

Thanks guys. I apreciate the info.
I think I need to enlarge the cutout somewhat before I proceed.
Graeme - I'll take a few shots today and send them to you.
I haven't actually fired up the engine yet, but am close to that. I am
finishing off the radiator connections, and having a few problems plumbing
the connection between the right front cyclinder and the pump, as well as
the inlet to the pump which comes from the radiator. These two connections
basically point straight at the right rear exhaust pipe, which is only
about 5 - 6 inches away. Anyone else out there have any
suggestions/solutions on this problem?
I am also fitting a cabin heater that was included with the kit, but it's
a bit complicated, and there are absolutely no notes/instructions included
in the documentation I have.

Colin I often look at the pics on Barnstormers.com or ebay to see how others
have done things. Do a search for kitfox at each site and you will find
some pics. Unfortunately there are no Kitfoxes with VW redrives around for

I had told a couple of folks the E.I. internal shunt digital Volt Amp
meter was sold. This is the one with over and under voltage indication.
The buyer who said he wanted it has backed out of the deal. Guess I
should wait until I get the payment in the future. This is the first one
that went that way so guess I will continue as before. Anyway, its back
on the market for 200 plus shipping. Very nice instrument. I also have
two E.I. digital EGTs instruments, no probes.
The flapperons, horizontal stabilizer, new piston set, and turbo are
sold as well. Special thanks to all that have kept there word on all
the many items that have left my hangar and my life.
Rick

Well your kind of correct... I have had some problems with the web hosting
and have changed hosts... of course that sounds easy... but it usually
doesn't go as smooth as one would hope... Everything, I'm told, should be
propagated and completed within 24 to 48 hours..
See ya soon...

Howard, I couldn't bring it up either. My guess is he is preparing a new
site with the new yet to be announced name and a new URL.

I wanted to relate a sad story with a happy ending.
I bought the LP Aero bubble doors for my IV about 6 months ago and spent a
few weeks installing them. I thought they looked quite nice, as I had all
the edges polished, the frames painted in LP, and about 10 rivnuts
receiving black button head cap screws holding the plastic to the frame.
About three weeks ago I noticed the paint bubbling on the rivnuts. About a
week ago I noticed cracks radiating from all the attach screws. I emailed
LP Aero, telling them my process, and Jeff Pfister responded that:
"Your problem was positively caused by the Loctite. Loctite has really
nasty chemical components that will craze and crack acrylic plastic even if
it is not in direct contact with the Loctite itself, but only in close
proximity. Apparently it does a number on the paint (which is itself just
another type of plastic) also.
We warn against the use of Loctite in the Kitfox installation instructions
on page 2 under "finishing"."
We swapped emails back and forth about possible repairs, but it became
clear that I was seriously screwed. It was my own fault. I had read the
directions but had completely brain-farted the Loctite warning. I had used
Loctite because the rivnuts had no thread locking capacity.
Anyway, the happy ending. After the back and forth, Jeff graciously offered
a discount on a new set of doors; what he called their "hardship discount",
(I can imagine what they call it in private,) which I enthusiastically
accepted. (Jeff said, and I confirmed, that the cracks would radiate out
indefinitely. There were so many that stop-drilling would have resulted in
about 5-10 holes per attach hole. In one case the entire hole was
shattered, and I was afraid the #6 attach screw would just pull through.)
So hat's off and a big thank you to LP Aero for good instructions, for
supporting Kitfox's, and for superb customer service.

You're a good man Guy. You will have no doubt saved someone else from
the same if not similar misfortune. Hats off to you. Also nice to know
LP cares. I also installed my large bubble doors from LP and they were a
first class company. And no the doors didn't survive but it wasn't the
doors fault. :)
