Does anyone know what resin was used to make up the fiberglass fuel tanks?
Mine was built in 1991, and has one 6 gallon left tank and a13 gallon right
tank. I would like to fix/repair/mangle the right tank. Are they made from
epoxy or polyester resin? They're brown in color, but that may be the cloth.
The resin looks to be very clear.
Thanks,

I am an Australian Ex-Pat living in Canada and am considering returning home

Are there any issues that you are aware of that would present problems in
registering/operating a Model 4 under the Ultralight rules?

Thanks to all for your responses re fitting the windscreen. I have put it
to the side for a few days while I attend to a few other bits. Re the warm
days suggestions... Sydney is in the Southern Hemisphere (much further
south than Gaeme who can go swimming with his Fox at any time of year) and
the warm days are behind us for a while so, the heat gun looks like the
only option at the moment.
Thanks again.. This list is the greatest.

I don't have any data at hand, Bradley, but I am 90% sure it's polyester. In any
case, repairs can (and should, in my opinion) be made with epoxy. They bond
very well together. Trust me, my cowling is half polyester and half epoxy!

Really!? I was under the impression that you had to repair with the original
material.
I thought it was polyester, but wanted to make sure. I can get either one,
just wanted to know which one.
Why do you recommend epoxy?

Well ... all the GRP (glass reinforced plastic) yachts are built in glassfiber
and polyester. And all GRP hull repair kits are ... epoxy. The latter is much
more pleasant to work with since it is odourless and doesnt't release toxic styren
gas as polyester does. But epoxy is more expensive than polyester. I guess
if price was not an issue, yachts would be built in epoxy and ... carbon fiber!
Epoxy is also more watertight. That's why many yacht owners coat their hull, under
the waterline, with epoxy. When I was designing yachts, we used to add about
2% of the weight as "water absorbtion" of the hull, to find the final displacement,
or total mass of the vessel.
Cheers,
Michel

Michael,
I was talking with a gentleman that had a Model 4 for sale complete with
Jabiru 80Hp engine. He told me that he cruises at 2,900 rpm 5 galls/hr (imp)
at 85mph.
Do you have similar figures with your Kitfox as I was a little surprise by
this as I achieve around the same with a 583. (Albeit not with the same low
rpm, noise level and TBO)

Well, it's difficult to say,Gary, because I am not good at numbers. I
know that e.g. my ASI is somewhat 5 MPH over the real speed, when I
compare with the GPS. But then, compensating for the wind, etc. I am
not accurate, it's more a feeling.
Anyway, at 2,900 RPM, I would reach, if not exceed my Vne on my model
3, which is 100 MPH. I usually cruise at 2,600 to 2,700 RPM, which
gives me something like 85 MPH. Since I also had a 582 before, I can
definitively say that the Jabiru engine gives more power than the
Rotax. But I think the question may be in the choice of a propeller.
I have a Jabiru two-bladed fixed-pitch wooden prop of 60 by 38 inches.
My static RPM at WOT is 2,900 and, at level flight: 3,000. I have never
reached anything near the rated 3,300. But I have been told that my
figures are good for a cruising propeller. I think you should ask your
gentleman friend what is his static RPM. I am pretty much sure that it
is higher than mine. If I understand this correctly, from reading the
Jabiru list, he has then a good climbing prop. Which is nice on short
fields. But I have 2,500 ft of asphalt to take off from. So, I am much
better with my slightly higher pitched prop with a nice and economical
lower cruising RPM. Actually, if I just fly around, sight-seeing with a
passenger, I hardly go over 2,400. Why burn much fuel?
From my trip to Belgium, last summer, I calculated my consumption to
be about 14 liters per hour. Since then, I have adjusted the carb
needle one step down (as instructed at 50 hours) and I should burn even
less. But then, again, numbers and statistics are not really my cup of
tea. All I know is that I am very pleased with the Jabiru, it served me
well during the 115 hours I have had it, summer as winter. Never a
problem to start it, even in sub-zero temperature. And yes, it is
incredibly smooth running, compared to the 582.
Cheers,
Michel

Michel's right. Even if the original tanks were polyester, (they were
probably vinylester, similar,) you should do modifications with epoxy.
Beyond the obvious handling benefits, polyester offers a really poor
mechanical bond, which is all that's available now that everything's cured.
The only way you would use polyester would be to make a completely separate
part and bond it to the original with acrylic or epoxy adhesive. Then you'd
be fine. Otherwise, if you want to bond directly to the original polyester
part you should use some epoxy with good adhesive properties.

Gary,
Get on the Avid list at Yahoogroups.com and ask for Alan Aaron..........he just
took his Avid back to Australia and can fill you in on the procedure and paperwork.
I'm sure it was registered in California before he crated and shipped
back....... aaaron@tvp.com.au I do believe this is his current email, but
he monitors the Avid list if this won't work.

There are a number of option now available to you Gary. Its no longer a
single choice should you decide to register in an ultralight catagory. Do
some research on the Recreation Aviation Australia site to see which will
suit your needs. For instance the 19 catagory allows you to perform all work
on the aircraft yourself where as the 25 catagory wont. You may even want to
consider GA registration to allow you greater flexibility in the use of
primary airports. The rego is the easy bit and only takes a matter of 2
weeks. I would however suggest deregistering your plane while your there as
the paper work will be required for proof of degistration. It could take
some time if your corresponding from here to Canada, particularly if you
decide to go with GA rego and have to deal with CASA.

weeks. I would however suggest deregistering your plane while your there as
the paper work will be required for proof of degistration. It could take
some time if your corresponding from here to Canada, particularly if you
decide to go with GA rego and have to deal with CASA.

Hi Joel Mapes,
Almost asked off list, but thought others might like
your answer too. Saw your pic on SportFlight
"Gotta-Haves" of the Dynon on you panel.
How do you like it? Does it work well in direct
sunlight?
Wish they were available when I planned my panel. It
would have cost me only slightly more to go Dynon then
steam gauges and weigh a lot less. Maybe for MyFox-2?
Funny about this list. I came to this topic from
politics and a hangar door. :-)

Some weeks ago I saw discussions on grounding of the filler neck on the fiberglass

My understanding is that a small wire will do, since
it is static electricity. It is also a good idea to
include a resistor in line to the spar so that the
charge bleeds off more slowly and avoids the spark.
Don't know what the others have used. I would guess
equivelent to a #16 wire is plenty with a little 1/2
amp 1000 ohm resister? That may be overkill.
You need good electrical contact at both ends, but
don't solder to the AL spar. If there is a brace
nearby that is riveted to the spar, I'd drill a #30
into that and use a pop rivet to attach the wire with
a crimpon end. Run the wire somewhere where it is
supported and not going to break off with time.
Where are our electrical experts on this?

Yes John,
Water cooled turbo. I have been thinking about
louvers above and just behind the turbo too for
cooling. Close them off for winter carb antiice,
since the turbo heat keeps the carb air warm. Open
for cooler intake air in the summer = more power?
Too many ideas to try and no time right now.

Electrically speaking a small wire will do the job. Hardly any
current is involved just a voltage potential. I used 16 ga because it
was handy. 22 ga would be ok. It is not like the wire braid between
your engine and the battery which carries hundreds of amps. The trick
is to keep the voltage the same between the filler neck and the
airframe. I connected mine to the spar. Then when fueling I use the
tie down attachment for the ground to earth.

That might have been me, Don. I used the Aircraft Spruce 1/4" tin
plated copper braid p/n 863, p.419. I attached it to the spar with a
ring terminal under a washer, then the spar attaching nut. I soldered
the braid to the filler neck, being careful to put it low enough to
clear the filler cap. I used a 200-watt soldering iron to do the job.

He seems to be a very nice guy. He prefers that the condition of the floats is
verified before boxing them up to ship, also for general production to both parties.
There are escrow services that would work... so I just ask if anyone is based at/near
there so that it would not be too much trouble to take a peak.
Thanks !

Somewhat off topic. I didn't have the neck grounded, but recognized the
requirement. I now have a couple of electrical clamps with 15' of 14ga test
lead wire between them. On each clamp I've attached about a foot of light
chain. One chain goes in the tank during fill with the clamp on the filler
neck. The other clamp goes on the axle with the chain on the ground. I pour
a little water on the ground chain for additional contact. I'm hoping this
will get any static buildup on the gasoline surface to ground.
If I were going to go to the trouble of grounding the filler neck, I'd
attach a conductive chain from the filler neck long enough to reach the
bottom of the tank.

Richard, Arlington is about 50 miles north of me. If no one closer
volunteers, I could inspect them. I am not an expert on floats, so keep that
in mind.
Just let me know.

Hello - Seatle area,
I'm purchasing Full Lotus Floats from a guy based at Arlington (AWO) WA.
Is there anyone on the list that operates out of AWO or lives in that area
and is willing to verify the condition (new) or happens to know the seller
(Ernie Corriveau) who has a Fergy B. in a hanger at AWO.

We are actively working towards our new facility.
We will be producing full kits in the fall.

Well, no carb icing problems for me being EFI. But the louvers sure are
efective at getting rid of the residual heat, plus they aid the intercooler
too. John

Yes John,
Water cooled turbo. I have been thinking about
louvers above and just behind the turbo too for
cooling. Close them off for winter carb antiice,
since the turbo heat keeps the carb air warm. Open
for cooler intake air in the summer = more power?
Too many ideas to try and no time right now.

Don,
Thank you very much for your offer.
At current gas prices... I wouldn't want to put you out for that much travel by
car - BUT... if you need an excuse to fly... maybe then.
In any case, I appreciate your offer.
- the seller is currently out of town but due back in about a week.

You might give the full lotus people a call and ask
them what to look for. While those floats handle
banging around very well, UV light is a problem for
them. Maybe full lotus can tell you how to inspect
for that. Obvioulsy make sure the internal bags don't
leak.

It doesn't get any better than this. What a great

Hi List,
I am certainly not happy to report this, but I am looking to send my Kitfox
3 to another good home...She has served me very well over the last year, but
it is looking as if it's time to move on.
I can't be flying much this summer, or later this year either - I'm working
for ExpressJet at Manchester Airport (KMHT) while finishing up my final
classes at school. By August I need to build sufficient multi-time to apply
for a Pilot job with my Airline, and by September I hope to be a
freshly-minted F.O. on the ERJ-145 (a year before the rest of my class even
graduates, no less). Anyway, with more Training in Houston this summer, and
then the relocation to EWR, CLE, or IAH, I cannot see holding onto the 'Fox
any longer, especially when my student loans come due in 8 months.
If you'd like more information, shoot me an email...As a head's up I'm
looking for somewhere in the ballpark of 15-16K...
