As some of you may remember, I had my 2" tapes come loose on the wing tops
due to slight shrinkage in high OAT's. Anyway, I'm finally tackling the job
to correct the proplem. My question: Is there a reliable method to simply
cut the tapes at the trailing edge, pull back the existing tapes to the
leading edge and reglue (Poly Brush)? After reglueing, can you iron the
tapes down through the existing Poly Tone paint? The other option is to
completely replace the tapes and that will get messy. I'm stuck on the best
repair method. Either way, once complete I will paint white stripes along
the tapes to prevent shrinkage in the future.

I have been flying my model 5 for eight years, i.e. 800 hrs (1600
landings)
on the same aluminum tail wheel spring, and my kitfox is VERY heavy.
In the first two years of operation, i.e. 200 hrs, I went thru rwo steel
leaf springs and one composit spring. Neither one was any good. The aluminum
one, if made of the proper alloy, proper dimensions and proper heat treating
is the best choice you can make.

Hi to all
Does anyone have any experience (or know someone who
has) with these floats being filled with nitrogen gas
instead of compressed air.
Removing the bladders every season to drain the
condensation water can be a pain in the neck in the
long run.
Regards
Mich

My single leaf aluminum tw spring by Grove has survived 315 hours of use
with about 98 percent landings on a rough farm strip (mine). Actually, the
word "leaf" is a misnomer because it's more of a bar than a leaf. About
1.25X1.00. So far so good, but I'll keep an eye on it.
Does anybody know if Grove is still producing these springs?

Hi Don!
Still in the little helo business?
I am afraid that there is no way not to be messy
replacing the tapes. Maybe the Poly people know of
one, but last I knew you can't iron poly-anything,
except polytack, without it making ruts. I tried it
on my rudder and ended up replacing the whole fabric
back there due to ruts from ironing.
I was told that you need to clean it down to the
fabric, replace the tapes, then build it back up to
the surrounding surface, UV coats and all. Dont know
how you would get the old tapes off without stripping
down to them anyway.
Sorry. Maybe the Poly People have a better idea.

I guess time's a wasting and it is really past time to formally announce the
8th annual Cameron Park Kitfox Fly-in and BBQ.
Our traditional date has been the second Saturday in June. This year we
found that the Golden West fly-in is on the same weekend but decided to go
forward with our event as scheduled and planned. If you plan on going to
Golden West also, please try to avoid a mid day arrival or departure here.
We share the taxiways - streets with pedestrians and local traffic and
safety is a major concern.
Check http://cameronparkkitfox.com for details.
Hope to see you here.

A problem with the Grove tw spring is that it gives you NO WARNING of
impending failure. With a steel spring there is PLENTY of warning before it
breaks.

I too have the tundra tires(smooth), currently I have about 200 hrs. on them and
still look great and I land on asphalt all the time. My opinion on tire wear
is if you don't land square and sqeak the tires, then you are wearing the tires(I
think 25 hrs is way to low of time). Most the time when doing touch and
goes I hold off the runway about a foot and run the center line, great practice
and keeps the wear down. Still I know that I will be needing tires soon, so
I'm also watching for a great location for tires.

It might be easier to use a paint spray setup when you fill. My compressor
has a air dryer that would probably remove enough moisture to prevent
condensation.

Agree with Kurt. Take it as close to the fabric as
you can then you'll be able to blend in the coatings
as you come back up.

I once needed really dry air from my paint compressor. I ran 50 feet of
air hose coiled up in an ice chest filled with ice, then to a painting
air dryer (water separator), then to my hose going to the sprayer. The
cold air hose really forced out all the moisture so when it got to the
water separator it collected a lot of water that I probably would not
have gotten out without cooling the air coming out of the compressor. It
worked great.

Then when ya'll are done with Lowell's Saturday event, just fill 'em up
and head to the 1st annual Kitfox/38th annual "all you can eat pancake
breakfast fly-in" at the Jackson County Airport, Jackson Michigan (JXN)
and have another fun day on Sunday. I'd almost be willing to guarantee
some kind of prize for anybody that can attend Lowell's gathering, and
ours here in Michigan the next day. Let's see....if you got to Lowell's
just after midnight on Saturday morning, "got your wrist stamped", then
headed here, and arrived by 11:59 pm Sunday night, I, and several
others would probably be up for making some kind of award. Any takers?.
Gotta be flying a Kitfox though, and no fair hitching a ride with a
727. : )

Subject: | Tundra tyres. WAS: Wanted: 8.50x6 Tires and Tubes... |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no>
Thanks everyone for your answers and yes, I sinned against my first
command: Change the title when the subject changes! :-)
I just hanged on Darin's thread and wrote: "By the way ..." but he
wanted 8.50 by 6 while I have the good ol' ChengShin shaved 20 by 7 -
8. They flew about 300 hours when I noticed that the rubber was gone to
the cord, in places. No problem, I had already bought, previously, from
someone on this list, a new pair of tyres of the same type. I flew with
them since last summer. But, this winter, I noticed that the rubber was
deformed in places, like bumps or rather, depressions. I don't know
where it comes from but I don't like it. So, I am thinking to change
them again.
Richard, yes, I expect the grooved tyres to be slightly heavier and
Alan, yes, I expect the grooves will pick up dirt. I was wondering if
they could pick a small stone that could make a hole in the fabric of
my wings?
Larry, I wouldn't think to cut grooves in existing tyres, I am only
looking for an alternative to the ChenShin ones. David, yes, I could
order them from John McBean, but here is the catch: I think they are a
bit weak for the mostly asphalt use I make of them and, buying in the
US, when we pay 25% Value Added Tax on both goods and shipping ... make
us, Norwegians, try to find local providers. That is, if the equivalent
goods can be found here, which is not always the case, especially in
aviation. But my guess is that those tyres are not really aviation
related, right?
I got an offer from a local tyre shop, for smooth tyres but of a
slightly different width and diameter. I was thinking to buy them but
then ... my home-made wheel penetration skis won't accept anything much
different. Or, I'll have to modify them too. So, I am not sure what to
do. I'd like first to understand why my present tyres are deformed.
Could it be from the skis I had this winter? But there is no wear on
the skis. I don't know. But if I decide to buy another pair of
ChenShin, I'll ask John McBean, of course. I'd rather take my business
to him, who had the courage to take over the Kitfox business, than
anyone else.
Cheers,
Michel

Thanks Kurt.
I played with a test rig today and decided it would be just as easy to
replace the old tapes with new. The old tapes peel off easily so no problem
getting the old ones off. When they shrank, the bond was broken.
BTW, no more helo work for me. That outfit was just too shaky.

Guy, Kitfoxes are preferred, but actually the builders, pilots and
wannabees are the most important in my mind, so Bonanzas are also welcome.
One of the local Kitfox pilots also has a Bonanza - so I can guarentee at
least one guy here will talk to you :-).

I think the aluminum springs were aftermarket.
The earlier steel springs also had a bit of a problem. The bend in the
spring was not gradual, but very sharp, a perfect stress riser and
guaranteed to eventually break.

The way to prevent pinching of the tube is to make a collar of paper
wrapped around the inside of the wheel to cover the split. Keeps the
tube from getting pinched.
By the way the Carlisle Turf Glides really do work well on an Avid or

Actually, it would be about 48 hours, wouldn't it? Midnight Fri (Sat.
morning) to Midnight Sunday...yeah, almost 48 hours. Maybe that "award"
isn't so safe after all...let's see, how far did Lindy fly?
Maybe I'll have to bribe Lowell to keep an outbound runway closed at
Cameron Park just to insure that the prize is safe. What? Noise
abatements after 10 pm? Now you're talkin'...
Oh what the heck, I'd love to see somebody do it.
If I really wanted to hedge the bet, I'd say it had to be a Sport Pilot
as PIC the whole way...that would almost insure that the prize would be
safe. : )

Hi ! Michel,
I have lawn mower come golf cart tyres on my plane. =
Kitfox IV/1200 They are Goodyear 4 ply. The originals were buffed down =
2 ply ATV tyres and got a puncture anytime within 1/2 mile of a prickle. =
I think my tyres are 16.50 x 7 x8 but that's from memory. They have =
Softrack wriiten on them and have a very mild tread pattern. I love them =
and they were cheap. =20
I think the reason for favouring smooth tyres is because they don't =
throw up rubbish and I guess also don't accelerate quite as fast when =
you touch down. I first fitted my tyres tubeless but was getting slow =
leaking where there was slight distortion on the inside of the rim where =
the brake disc mounting lugs were welded. I then fitted tubes and had =
good results for 18 months when one went flat as the tube had turned and =
cracked around the valve. Originally we ran 9lbs in those buffed down =
ATV tyres and on that basis we went with 14lbs in the lawnmower tyres as =
they were smaller. Since the incident with the tube turning I am running =
18 lbs and I think this will stop the turning. I was worried that at 18 =
lbs I may bounce on landings but that is not the case. Remember it's =
not really a bounce but we fly again if the tail wheel does not touch =
down at the same times as the mains or perhaps a little before. Actually =
the plane rolls easier and truer with 18lbs and i like it.=20
I guess the tread around aircraft tyres is to shed water without the =
tread across the tyre. Just my guess ! Anyway I think in a taildragger =
we are better off without them as the tyre can move a little helping if =
we are not dead lined up or moving sideways. This will be a bit more =
foregiving re ground looping. Never the less I am not having trouble =
with the slight tread on my tyres although I must admit I do take care =
on bitumen. I also have wheel pants stopping anything thrown up.

Yes, I'm familiar with the Jackson in California, having lived in San
Fran ("don't call it 'frisco") and Davis/Dixon/Esparto for 22 years.
I only hoped to tag the Kitfox thing onto an existing fly-in, the
Jackson, MI thing, hoping to get some folks together and actually plan
for our own Kitfox get-together, some time later. When are you visiting
Ohio?

Actually, the

About

Yes, I fitted a Homebuilders soft tail wheel and for the money that's the
greatest addition one could make I think. John A.

Deke,
I also have an aluminum tail spring 1 1/4" X 1 " and like =
you said, its more a bar than a
leaf. After 300 plus hours and 700 landings, I think it will last =
indeffinately. To make for a more smooth
taxi, I Installed an eight " neuphmatic tail wheel.

My single leaf aluminum tw spring by Grove has survived 315 hours of =
use
with about 98 percent landings on a rough farm strip (mine). =
Actually, the
word "leaf" is a misnomer because it's more of a bar than a leaf. =
About
1.25X1.00. So far so good, but I'll keep an eye on it.
Does anybody know if Grove is still producing these springs?

Subject: | VW redrive thrust results |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "ron schick" <roncarolnikko@hotmail.com>
I made the first thrust test with my 1200 MK IV. The engine is a 1915cc VW
with a 1.6:1 redrive and 72" three blade Ivoprop. I was disapointed at 2500
rpm's static wot, but got 345- 370 lbs thrust at that combination. The
advertised potential for the redrive is 475 lbs with a 2180cc VW.
I need to tinker and get my rpms up into the more productive hp range, but
don't want to just start taking inches off the prop. First I need to verify
my tack, fuel mixture, etc.
What do the other engines produce for thrust? Anyone have numbers?
Suggestions?
Thanks Ron NB Ore N541KF
