I once had a Coke explode in a Herc at about 25,000ft. Scared crap outa us,
until we realized what it was. Sounded like a AAA shell going off.
BTW, all the tires in the military that I know of are filled with nitrogen.

I wonder how the pressure change going to altitude affects them. I once
near exploded a candy bar wrapper at 12500 msl. Not a problem with 6 ply,
but a thought on lawn tractor tires such as ours. Ron NB Ore

I had good luck using the paint thinner that you mentioned...mineral
spirits. Make sure that it's fresh, maybe? Soak rags spread over the
surface, and keep them wet for 8 hours or more, then scrape with
plastic scraper. That's all that I can offer. Mine were 11 years old
when I got them, but probably kept out of the sun all that time. Maybe
yours got sun-cooked.

Okay guys, I have aquired an older altimeter with Kolzman window, and this is what
has me wondering, when the barometer is adjusted there is a bug that moves
around the perimeter of the altimeter. The bug moves faster than either of the
needles. What purpose does the bug serve?

Thanks for your quick response to my Email.
First what is the location of the airplane?
I noticed in your posting there was no mention of gyro instruments. Does the
plane have turn coordinator,DG,or atitude horizon.?
What is the serial # of the Rotax 912UL ?
I am now familiar with the MicroAir radio and the Magellan GPS ,so need no additional
info there. Wally

Subject: | Elevator hinge tab question?? |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "darinh" <gerns25@netscape.net>
I mounted my elevator last night, or should I say tried to mount the elevator.
The problem I am having is that the welded tabs are not exactly in line. Does
anyone have any experience with this and what did you do? Oh, this is on my
Series 7.
I could ream the bushing another .01 or.001 but I don't want unneccessary slop
in the elevator. I sighted down the hinge line and the problem hinge looks to
be about 1/16" out of line. Do you simply flex the elevator leading edge to
get the fit? I guess I am used to the RV where everything fit like a glove!
Any ideas or help are appreciated.

The difference with the Vans is that it is punched metal and this is
welded tube. The welding warps the tubing a little even though it is in
a jig. The advantage is that you can simply cold bend the parts to fit
perfectly. Do it before covering if possible. Also the elevator does not
rotate on the bolt, but rather on the bushing that the bolt clamps in
place so you will not get slop even if you over ream the tab holes. Good
question.

Ron,
Any answers yet?
Going by memory, that is about 70 hp worth of thrust.
I drove VW's for many years, but they have not had a
lot of good results in most planes. Some do OK and
they are cheap, but most of the ones I heard from
thought they were underpowered.
Keep working on the tuneup and see what happens. The
potential is there somewhere.

Michel,
I am not sure if you are talking about wear spots or
flat spots. Do your tires pick up flats spots from
sitting in one place while parked in the cold? Some
tires do that. Our big nose wheel tires on the
Boeings make the cockpit bounce badly in the winter
until they work round again while taxiing.
Not a problem for me if I have a female copilot. ;-)
Nice view, but I can't remember why I like it.
If you don't taxi far enough, the flat spots will not
work out. Makes a thumpy takeoff. If this is the
problem, you will know when it goes away with warmer
temps.

My licence being VFR only, but for the sake of my general interest for
aviation, please could you, please, explain "minimum IFR approach,"
Kurt?
Since the bug moves are one adjusts the pressure, I guess this is only
valid under transition altitude, when on QNH setting. Does the bug
shows transition level (a variable) ? But that changes from AD to AD,
doesn't it? I am sure I am completely on the wrong track and I look
forward to your answer.
PS: Springtime has finally come to Norway: 18 C and sunshine. Got my
oil cooler re-installed on the Kitfox and I am ready for a nice flying
summer!
Cheers,
Michel
