I did mine with an electronic inclinometer and tightened each blade just to
nip then cris/cross retorqued. 16 degs at the tip, but thats for a gutsy

      Hello:

How are you guys pitching your Warpdrive 3 blade props?

I spoke with Kerry at Lockwood. He said for a Kitfox IV with a Rotax 912 =
UL and a 68" three blade Warpdrive, to go in two inches from the blade =
tip and pitch it to about 10.5 degrees. This will yield a static rpm of =
      about 5500rpm.

He also said to use a smart level instead of the Warpdrive pro-tractor.

I have been trying to track all three blades the same by torquing one =
side of the prop hub before the other side to bring the blades as close =
as possible to one another. I was told to torque all the hub bolts using =
the criss-cross method regardless of the tracking.

      What have others done?

      Thanks,

Randy When I finally get my Fox in the air I will try to make a trip to
SD. Work seems to slow progress. I will get a month or two at a time
then have to head back to work and it might be months before I get back
      to the plane.

Thanks Lowell. I fly from a strip on my ranch. We are about 4 - 5
      miles
north of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. With Crazy
Horse, Devils Tower and the Badlands all close by, this is a great place
      to
      fly.

I am trying to break my tether, but so far have stayed in a 150 mile
      radius.
Hoping to visit Longmont, Colorado, Sioux Center, Iowa, and Bozeman,
Montana this summer. I would sure like to make it to Cameron Park, but
      my
wife and I are still stretching our wings.....

      Hi Richard,

I will be at AWO this Saturday, the 20th for an NWEAA meeting. If your
seller could meet me at the EAA hanger near the ultralight area around noon
I could take a look at the float for you.

      Hey Jim,

We know what you mean. Well, there are those retired
guys with lots of time, but they paid to get there.
It took me 6 years to get mine flying. And then I had
to pay back for the time consentrated at the end for
testing. And I haven't flown my Fox since moving to
Florida last year. Just too busy.

But today I decided to just go for it. Forget the
rest, it was supposed to be a great day and so I got
up early, carefully preped the plane and just took
off. Ahhhh yes, even turbulence can feel good if you
haven't had it in a while. Isn't this what I did all
      that work for?

My coolant was in the 160's. My oil temp was in the
180's. Gearbox temp good. Oil pressure 49 psi.
Those I was pleased with. Even a bit surprised over,
      given Florida temps.

Cockpit temps up to 87 F. I could use more pilot
      cooling. :-)

Only egt's and fuel/air ratio bothered me. Full rich
was just barely enough to give me 1400 F in cruise.
This is still a mystery with my plane. One flight it
runs high egts and the next it is right in there,
      leanable and fine.

Gosh, it was nice to "worry" about tweeking and
flying.... I slowed down to enjoy it. Tried for 60
knots, but the lifties kept me diving between thermals
and I got to 75 from time to time to hold altitude.
3.5 GPH at around 80 mph in a fat S-5.

I accepted the first landing as good enough. 8 mph of
headwind and so I had to taxi to the turnoff. Let the
plane cool down outside while I installed a bottom
hangar door gasket to keep the grass clippings and
dirt out. Not sure I like rolling doors....

And then back to the real world. It was like turning
the noise off for awhile, and then turning it back on.

      You'll get there too Jim.

Kurt S. S-5 W/68 hrs of flight time.

      Do not archive

      Hi ! Larry,
yes they are buffed down by a recapping shop. However I =
swapped to Lawnmower/Golf Cart tyres with a mild tread made by Goodyear =
      in USA. I think they are 16.50 x 7 x 8. They are 4 ply whereas the =
originals are only two ply so don't get punctures all the time. As they =
are slightly smaller they are still only about the same weight and don't =
touch the inside of the wheel pants at times like the originals. I am =
      very much happy with these,

      Hi Rex,
I found some tires I think I will try from John McBean. They are a little
larger, but for the flying I do with the Fox,fatter is better and I don't
have thorns to contend with. Also,I never use wheel pants so that is not a
      problem.
I think I will still try to see if I can get a recapper to buff down a set
of the old type ,Just to see..
        Thanx for the info. Larry

      Hi John and Rick,

It is my understanding from the experience of others
here that you are OK up to 788 C/1450 F EGT. Rick is
one of our GURU's for SS valves and other engine
improvements that keep them running, so I follow his
advice. I still have the origional valves, but I
think it is good to stay 1450 with the SS valves too.

      Is that right Rick?

Oh, we take the EGT reading about 1" or 2.5 cm on the
pipe below the heads. Different results for different
      locations.

I try to run 1450 F/788 C in cruise and can usually
lean a bit to get that. Today my Fuel/Air gauge was
showing on peak at a little less EGT, but full rich.
Probably a lack of use problem giving some gauge
error, but I left it run full rich just in case.
Usually my F/A gauge shows rich at 1450, so I feel
      safe to lean to it.

Your 760 EGT might carbon you up a bit, if you use
that for cruise. Seems a touch rich, but you will
      know from experience.

I have to lean mine for taxi and runup or it shudders.
That is because I have a rich idle port setting,
since there is no choke for winter ops.

On my engine, I can take off at full power, full rich
and see well under 1400 F. When I reduce power the
EGT's rise as I reduce thru 4000 RPM, then falls
      again. I haven't found a prop/power setting that will
keep me under 1450 in cruise in a range of 3600-4200
rpm. Maybe with more time I will. The engine isn't
      broken in until 300 hrs.

I rebuilt my CAP prop and it works better than new,
but now its smoothest RPM is about 3200 instead of the
3900 I had before. Since 3200 engine rpm gives me a
good egt, I cruise there. I set 5.5 GPH on the flow
meter leaned to 1450 and use that for cruise speed.

Until I have some more anti-drag devices installed, it
feels like the plane is working too hard for little
more speed above those power settings. This is good
for 85-95 knots or 98 to 110 mph depending on
      thermals. ;-)

Sounds like your water is right on, but the oil is
just a bit cool. That is the better fault to have.
:-) I think if you could keep the oil at 95, that
      would be better.

Took me 6 years to build mine. Took you 10 years to
design, create and then build yours. The Wright
Brothers built theirs in less time, but I think we out
      fly them by a bit.

      Kurt S.
