I would like to know if anybody has plans to fly into arlington. The dates are
july 5-9. I'm in the spokane area and would like to fly over with other foxes
for the event. Hopefully the weather will be better this year.

Mike I am in North bend and am debating driving, flying an Avid or 152.
Not used to all that airspace or going places in the stol Avid either. A
group flight sounds fun though. The Kitfox will still be in testing if I
get my cert by then.

Hi All,
Wanted to do a quick poll and see if anyone has had
any problems with their tanks that they've attributed
to using ethanol blended fuel? Mine are Kreem coated
and have been fine for the last 10 yrs but I'm
nervous.
As of now all the stations in Houston are pretty much
10% ethanol. The last batch of fuel I purchased was
still MTBE based. I've been testing. Anyway, now
that burning some ethanol is a given (I don't want to
switch to avgas due to the 912 & lead as well as
price) I thought I'd check.
Thanks,
Ted

Hi Mal,
Check your water temp system by use of a boiling kettle, put the water
temp tip into the boiling water -then read 210 deg. F at your indicator
(remember to set the master switch to on as the water temp system need 12
VDC for working).
For further fault finding got to Westach:
http://www.westach.com/repair.htm
then roll down to: "WATER, OIL, AIR, and CARBURETOR TEMPERATURE" section.
good luck.

Torgeir.

Sorry Mal, a correction here - you should read 212 deg. F (100 deg C) -
equal to the temp of boiling water (at sea level of course. :) )

Mal -
Another consideration is that with a static test run, there's very little airflow
passing through your radiator. Some have suggested that you hose down the
radiator during static testing to keep temps down. If you didn't do something
like that, you may well see that 185 reading drop to 170 or below when you're
blowing 65 mph air thru the rad.

Steve,
Wayne is a great instructor probably one of the best around. Good luck scheduling
any time with him in the summer. He does a LOT of crop-dusting which doesn't
leave much time for instructing. I talked to him last summer about getting
my endorsement and he would only schedule me for 1 hour per week! Knowing that
it takes most pilots 6 to 10 hours to get the endorsement that was not going
to work as my Fox was sitting in the hanger waiting to fly. I ended up doing
my tailwheel with a guy named Dwight Burkes out of Ogden. He was a great guy
and a former military pilot. I did my training in his C140 and then did a
bit of dual in my Kitfox and it worked out great.

I wondered about this. I recently ran for about 30 minutes on the ground
with all temperatures good except the water stabilized at 190. (582.) I
assumed it was OK, since it was a ground run, but Dave Stevenson seemed to
think 190 was too high, even for a full power ground run. What do you think?

Hi ! Larry,
I bought a couple of these about 12 months ago for =
when I needed them. I used to race Karts with these on and know how =
notorious they are for failing. Anyway I just fitted them and they hold =
the carbies a lot steadier and certainly look to be of far superior =
material. I am impressed but it is early days yet.

Hi ! Malcolm,
I think in normal weather static 185 deg is to =
be expected. You have no airflow over the radiator. Mine will do this =
and yet fly on about 175 deg. At the moment we are in winter here in =
Australia and last weekend it flew at only 145 deg so really it needed a =
bit warmer. I don't think you need to worry just because you see 185 deg =
static but keep in mind all the advice you get.

I'll go along with Dave Stevenson. 180 is the max Rotax spec and should be
respected whether observed on the ground, in the air or, sitting on a test
bench. Temperature is Temperature.

Subject: | Kitfox tanks and blended ethanol |

Thanks Jimmie. I think it's mostly going to be owners out on the west coast
or up north as I believe ethanol has been more prevalent in those areas in
the past. I'm looking for comments from anyone that has actually had
ethanol blended gas in their tanks for a long time.
Regards,
Ted

Mine is 12 years old and always been flown either out of Houston or the
Austin area. No problem so far, (knock on wood).

Hi All,
Wanted to do a quick poll and see if anyone has had
any problems with their tanks that they've attributed
to using ethanol blended fuel? Mine are Kreem coated
and have been fine for the last 10 yrs but I'm
nervous.
As of now all the stations in Houston are pretty much
10% ethanol. The last batch of fuel I purchased was
still MTBE based. I've been testing. Anyway, now
that burning some ethanol is a given (I don't want to
switch to avgas due to the 912 & lead as well as
price) I thought I'd check.
Thanks,
Ted
