--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Dave" <dave@cfisher.com> Guy, I think the biggest culprit on the Kitfox cowl is the larger size of the opening allowing more in air in that necessary. I think 25 to 30 sq inches would be plenty with an exit of 50 to 75 sq in exit. Has anyone meaurered the actual size ? I would tend to think that we are closer to 1 to 1 right now on standard cowl which if so would be a slight drag producer. The first picture was very familiar as it was a similarly painted Rans S-6 that was in our flying group - Idaho and other places. I saw that scene many times. I can relate to your great weekend. This weekend we are off to a Rans fly-in in Utah. We will be crossing mostly desert, though. For everyone`s convenience, you can hold down the shift key when clicking on a link and it will open in a new page. This way you can open a picture, or all pictures on seperate pages, then go right back to the list message after closing the pictures. No need to slowly reload the message or get back to the list. On some pages I hit the "stop" button on the window when it has loaded enough. No need to load the advertising too. Saves time on slow connections. You are probably puzzled by the cowling, Glenn. I had a 582 with the beautiful round cowling but, one and half year ago, I replaced the ageing 582 by a Jabiru 2200. I tried the Australian Skyfox cowling but it fits only the newer Kitfoxes that have a rather flat top of the cowling. Adapting it to my plane would mean: modify the firewall, the glareshield, the panel and the windshield. So, I went for plan B: Cut the existing cowling in two and form a new front, first in cardboard, then moulded in fiberglass and epoxy. It doesn't look too good but it works very well, my engine is incredibly cool, even on hot summer days. I am very pleased with the Jabiru. I have now 128 hours behind it and apart from changing the oil every 50 hours, it's maintenance free. It may not have the torque needed to pull a sharp initial climb as a 912 but it goes easily to Vne, at level, long before WOT. It runs very smooth and feels very reliable. One thing, though: At idle the prop spins slightly faster than a Rotax and the plane floats a bit more after flaring. But once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Cheers, Michel

Michel Here is another way of fitting the Jabiru into the standard Kitfox round cowl. It's a bit hard to see from the fotos but he has used a lexan disc to close off the large inlet area and has cut out holes in the disc and cowl to bring the air into the Jabiru ducts. It's quite a nice installation. I flew this plane last week and as you say it doesn't have the high rate of climb of a 912 but it sure sounds beautiful and cruises easily at 100mph. I also noticed the almost complete lack of vibration. Nice setup. What altitude did you use for most of these flights? You appear to be above the highest mountains that show in some of the pictures, so I would guess that you may be flying approximately at 10,000ft MSL. Good Lord, no, Duane. I was more at 4,500 feet AMSL. You see, Norway and Sweden is a big chump of granite that was pressed down by the last ice age. As the climate became warmer, the glaciers melted into many streams that eroded the rock making deep valleys under the water. As the ice vanished, the continental plate started rising and it still does it today. In the Viking's time, the sea level was about two meters higher than now. South Norway is a central plateau, about 5,000 ft above sea level. But the fjords are going down to sea level and, at some places, maybe another 2,000 ft deep. But there are very few mountain tops. If you see snow on them, that's because ... we are north of latitude 60, about the same latitude as Anchorage, Alaska. In south Norway, the "tree limit" i.e. the highest altitude pines and birch trees can grow, is about 3,000 ft and that goes down, toward the north, to be sea level, up north, where Torgeir lives. The only reason Norway is inhabitable is thanks to the Gulfstream current that warms up our shores. So, please, don't stop that water from coming out of the Gulf of Mexico, thanks! :-) Cheers, Michel do not archive

Yes, I have seen several modifications of the round cowl, to fit a Jabiru, Gary. Some are quite well done. But, IMHO, as I needed the two inlets so typical to air-cooled boxer engines, I felt it was time to go away from the "radial engine" look. I think I could have made it nicer if I had placed the oil cooler somewhere else. But a well functioning engine was my prime concern and a vertical oil cooler, placed in front of the engine, right behind a relatively small opening is what is the most effective, I think. And in that respect, I am very pleased, the entire engine compartment works very well as a "cooling chamber." Cheers, Michel

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Michel Verheughe <michel@online.no> Friends, during the last week-end fly-in, I met the president of the Norwegian microlight aircraft association and I mentioned the problem of Ethanol and fiberglass tanks. He was very interested but knew nothing about it. I remember seeing links to different places in the US mentioning the problem but I don't remember them. Could the original poster post them again, please? Not to disturb the list, I'll welcome them off-list, of course. Thanks in advance, Michel do not archive
