Terrific pictures, Michel <http://home.online.no/~michel/Dokka/>! In
your "Happiness is..." photo, I'm amazed at how much the front of
your airplane looks like a face--complete with mouth, nose, and eyes
with pupils!
You've inspired me to work harder on my new 'fox. :-)

John,
I am new to kit building. Can you give me some info on what is involved in
completing your project? Also, do you have any pictures you could provide.

I just did my first 5 solo flights in anything today....well, except
for jumping off the porch as a kid with a pillow case for a 'chute, but
I digress.
Yup, the day finally came, and my instructor got out after we made 4 or
5 practice landings, and asked if I wanted to take it around. I
couldn't get the door closed fast enough behind his departing body. I
made 3 flights around the Napoleon (3NP) grass "complex" and reported
back to him, then made 2 more. Then we flew it back home to my slightly
more tricky field with trees closer in, and I landed there. He wants to
keep me on a day-to-day basis as far as the first few days after
"birth", then he'll give me the go-ahead to venture out and start
learning what flying is all about.
Did I mention that the plane is a Kitfox? And man, that Jabiru 2200
power can really be felt when the 225-pound instructor got out! It
floats a bit more on landing, but sure gets off the ground quick.

A friend to local EAA Chapter 62 died in a C-180 crash over the weekend.
This is a very big deal for everyone at Reid Hillview Airport and the surrounding
areas. He took his skills and applied them to the smaller general aviation
community. Not many people do that these days. He repositioned planes in his
shop hangar so EAA Chapter 62 would have a place to meet once a month.
Here is the Associated Press report:
>>NTSB investigating plane crash in Southern Oregon
>>GOLD HILL, Ore. - Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board
were at the scene Monday of a plane crash in a rugged, remote region of Southern
Oregon that killed a California couple and two other people over the weekend.
>>
>>Curry County Marine Deputy Ted Heath said evidence of the Saturday crash, near
Half Moon Bar Lodge on the wild and scenic section of the Rogue River, suggests
that the 1965 Cessna's right wing clipped the top of a tree and came apart.
>>
>>"A witness told me that the plane had gone downriver, and was flying low and
sounded like there were no problems," Heath said. "Then, it took a hard left turn
right above the river, and clipped the top of a tree with the wing. That piece
came off, which shifted the plane. It nose-dived down, and immediately exploded."
>>
>>The wing of the plane was found apart from the rest of the machine, Heath said,
and had not burned.
>>
>>The plane was flown by aircraft mechanic Vern Robert Miller, 60, of San Jose,
Calif., whom Heath described as a "very accomplished pilot." His wife, Elizabeth
George Miller, 58, was also on board with passengers, Sharon Viola Hanson,
61, and Roberta Ellen Way, 65, both from Creswell.
>>
>>Hanson and Way had been friends for nearly 40 years, raising their kids together
and taking joint family vacations. The two were at their annual girls' getaway
weekend at the secluded Paradise Lodge on the Rogue River.
>>
>>Way's husband, Bob, said the pair apparently accepted an impromptu invitation
from Miller, who had just delivered supplies to the lodge and had another delivery
to make at a lodge upriver.

Lynn,
Good thing I voted for your Fox instead of my own at JXN. I understand you won
by ONE vote that day! Have your instructor show you how to navigate over to
57D now. It's the same distance to 57D as it was for me to fly to JXN. I was over
at Howell with the Fox today. If I'd known you were out soloing, I would have
diverted over to watch and listen (and maybe hold that trophy for you).

... a bit late, due to an enjoyable week-end:
Thanks Rob, Lowell, Jose and Noel for your answers. The more I think
about new tyres, the more I get a headache! Here is why. Because of my
wheel penetration skis, I can't go far away from the Cheng Shing
20x7.00-8 dimensions. But this seems already impossible. So, I'll have
to modify the skis too. I am now aiming at something slightly smaller
so that the modification would be only to shorten the four legs that
hold the skis.
But ... it's a jungle out there, guys! First, it doesn't seem to be a
standard way of writing tyre sizes. Sometimes it says something like
650, sometimes 5. What unit are those? And it's from the same tyre
manufacturer and same web site.
Then there is the price. I see aviation tyres way above USD 100 and
others as cheap as ... USD 5!
What do you make of this:
http://www.ultralightnews.ca/suspension/tirestubes.htm
Is it something we can use on a Kitfox? Do you manage to make sense of
the type, the size and the price? I'd appreciate any help before I go

An old bush pilot once described to me a system he used in soft snow. Once
the plane was on the snow he would let the air out of the tires and put a
plate of Aluminium( I guess ) under the tire to close off the opening. He
would then put just enough air in the tire to hold the plates in place. He
said it worked great for soft snow.
I have composite straight skis for my plane. The guy who owned the plane
before me used it extensively on skis. He developed an insert for the skis
that allowed the plane to easily be towed backwards by tying the tail wheel
to the back rack of a snowmobile. He just had to remember to remove the
inserts before trying to take off.

Michel,
One last thought. When I responded, I was not focused on the wheel
penetration skis. A friend that came to the fly-in here had tires that
closely resembled the Cheng Shing, but he found a similar lugged tire and
spent three hours sanding the lugs off with a belt sander. They looked
pretty good. They have the round profile we are used to rather than the
flat tread that he found to be a real drag - no pun intended.

That is exactly what we are doing, Jeremy! The hurricane Alberto, your
first one this year, is now classified as a tropical depression and is
currently passing over Scotland on its way to southern Norway. The
weather forecast for the next two days isn't too good. Of course, no
hurricane force wind but enough to keep my Kitfox on the ground for a
few days.

But ... it's a jungle out there, guys! First, it doesn't seem to be a
standard way of writing tyre sizes. Sometimes it says something like
650, sometimes 5. What unit are those? And it's from the same tyre
manufacturer and same web site.

Michel,
Try this website, I think it will clear up your confusion on tire sizes. It has
about every aviation tire size out there and it gives you all kinds of different
data points on a given tire. It even explains the three different sizing
labels used in aviation. Read through the definitions and abreviations section
then go to the Tire Data section. Hope it helps.

Don, It worked for me too. I'm sure the list will be happy with Matt's
effort. A question, though. That is some file name for the JPG image. Is
there a reason for a file name that complex?

Lowell,
The file is actually stored on Matt's servers at his office. The file name
is automatically generated and given a url to correspond to the location
deep within his computers. All file names have to be unique, and so the
names are long and complex by their nature. Just the way computers and the
internet are. Actually Matt just loves to confuse everyone.
