I made sure that I wore a shirt that I was willing to sacrifice, but no
mention was made of the shirttail cutting. I later spoke of that
practice with a friend, and he said that they don't do that much around
here. I had seen shirttails hanging in other training areas, but not
around here. In fact, when I got dressed for the day, I put on a
Kitfox shirt....willing to have it cut if it meant soloing. Does it
still count if I cut it myself? Sounds a little
self-congratulatory...almost like soloing sex, eh?

Funny thing about voting for oneself, Rex...I thought about that
practice, and my Dad had told me at one time "if you don't vote for
yourself, who else should vote for you?" I guess I've followed that
thinking since then, always wondering how things would have turned out
if I hadn't voted for my own car, photo, woodworking project, airplane
model, airplane....
I'll tell you what Rex, I'll come over on July 8th, to your fly-in,
and be sure to vote your ticket if you have a contest. : )

I hadn't even put the two together until you just mentioned it,

be the first plane you ever go up in alone. Good thing I didn't think

Well. For me the first time WAS solo. (ROFLOL!.)
I didn't cut a shirt though. (ROFLOLSM!)
Seriously though - congratulations on solo. I remember the event being
somewhat anticlimactic, (I was over-trained,) but I well remember the first
few solo flights away from the field and associated feeling of accomplishment.

Where I did my flight training they gave you a shower of cold water from
anything that will hold the water. We call it dousing. I got doused well...
I'm not sure what the symbolism of it is but that is what they did.
When my dad learned to fly they used to cut off your tie. The symbolism was
cutting the ties to mother earth. The day he soloed they spent no time in
cutting his tie.... He came home still wearing his cut off tie and an ear
to ear smile until my mother reminded him that the tie was a pure silk tie
which cost more than $100. in 1961.
What do you mean Oops???

Ah! the tie cutting. I remember when I went to Germany with the air guard, northern
part, I think the little town was klopemburg(excuse the spelling), I watched
a group of locals congradulate a new pilot by having him on his knees and
had his tie on a stump and they went through a ritual of cutting the tie. Very
cool to watch.
For me it was a time I will never forget. I soloed at Spokane international during
busy time. That was a goal that I wanted. The instructor wasn't to keen
on it, but that was what I wanted. He had me doing several low passes, these
consisted of landing configuration and staying just off the runway, he said if
I could run it centerline the entire 9000 ft. he would concider it. Well I
did it and he let me solo, it was way cool. I even had several 737 to play with.
Oh, my solo was in a C172.
I tell ya, when I finished I remembered what I saw in Germany, but I didn't get
anything, just a great feeling inside of accomplishment.
Finally, CONGRADULATIONS on flying that Fox solo, that alone is quit an accomplishment.

Lynn,
I'd say you are in an exclusive :) and small [Wink] group to build and first
fly your own Kitfox. I look forward to seeing your big E tail in the sky.
-----------------------------
First flights:
My first solo flight was a few T&Gs at North Perry Airport (Hollywood, FL). While
I was doing my first solo flying, the Blue Angels were practicing over Opa
Locka (about 6 miles south) for an air show the following weekend. My scan included
many glances south. Ill not forget this most memorable air show.
Ive been at many FBOs and seen shirt tails tacked to the wall. Where I trained
there was no first solo tradition, beyond a likely wipe of the brow or palms and
possibly a change of underwear. My physical memory stops at very moist palms.

That is exactly what we are doing, Jeremy! The hurricane Alberto, your
first one this year, is now classified as a tropical depression and is
currently passing over Scotland on its way to southern Norway. The
weather forecast for the next two days isn't too good. Of course, no
hurricane force wind but enough to keep my Kitfox on the ground for a
few days.
Cheers,

Doesn't count till it rips up your favorite tree from your front yard

known as a good rain (which is bad if your already flooding, but good if

I guess nothing is perfect in this world. I've been tinkering with this little
annoying heat problem for 2-3 years now and every time I think it's fixed, it
bites me. Today I went up in 90+ OAT's with the final modifications (I think).
On climbout to 1000' (solo) the max temp was about 172 with cruise at 158.
Put in the Rich Man for the second trip and temps went to 178 at 800' (climb
rate was decreased with passenger). Reduced power just a tad and increased
climb speed to 70 and the temps settled at 178.
Final coolant ratio was 75% water to 25% antifreeze plus a dash of the product
WatterWetter. Last week I had 50/50 ratio. The new ratio seems to have cooled
things off by around 5-7 degrees.
I can accept today reading at least for a while. Did notice that temps dropped
below 150 on one long decent. Closed 1/2 the radiator and it stopped and
started to increase.

Wow!
We never forget that "first one".
Not quite as thrilling in a store bought, nose wheel
plane, but mine had memorable points too. It was 20
below F. Blowing snow and the instructor refused to
lay out on the grass and watch. C-150 (fooey) I had
to open the vents turning base to clear the front
window to land. It frosted over from my breath. Then
I had to close them after takeoff to be able to still
hold the yoke with frozen gloved hands. (fooey yokes)
Found I had to be real slow with the throttle, or the
engine would not accellerate for takeoff. Hit a snow
drift and almost got stuck on the taxiway after the
last landing.
Even then, I yeild to the first solo flight being in
your own Fox. :-)
But no one was going to cut any clothes off me on that
day! I needed every shred to stay warm.

Guess I need to share my experience. I was taking lessons in Nampa, Idaho. The
field is located 340 miles from where I live. I did my first solo flight with
my Model II alone at my home field. I did the pre flight and returned to the field
early the following morning. I climbed in her almost ready to bust with anticipation.
When I pushed the throttle in it all came together. The tail raised,
she began to dance on the mains then off. It is in fact one of the most exhilarating
experiences of my life.

Lynn,
Congratulations on your solo. This is what we call a "good start". We need to
keep remembering all the millenia that humans looked to the birds and sky
thinking covetously about the arerial environment. We live in a great time.
Ask yourself - how many people were flying a hundred years ago. The avearge
person can actually do this now. Some even do so with their own airplane -
better yet.
We each have our solo story; for me, it was a cessna 140 on a grass strip. I
didn't even have a tire blow on my first solo experience - saved that one for
takeoff on the second solo - still don't know why it blew on takeoff instead
of landing - the takeoff wasn't so bad, but apparently the tires were kinda
crappy back in those days when the nose wheels were on the back- actually
thought about the blown tire once in the air for a moment, but decided to
ignore it while landing on the grass and everything went well - lots to be
said for grass. I still like grass. Grass is good. Grass is great.
The proof of your experience will be many future years of safe and fun flying
- fly well so you can take your great grand children with you some day.
Never bust your butt; don't let anyone else bust it for you, and you will
have lots of fun.
Sincerely,
Dave S

My very first solo on Jan. 10th was in my Kitfox 5, but I bought it already built.
I didn't really place any significance on it, but now that I think about it--I
was in an experimental and a Kitfox at that, it does seem cool!
It was about 8:30 am when my instructor got out and gave me the go ahead. Up until
then, there was no sunshine, but it was brightening. I was too scared to put
on sunglasses in fear of not being able to read the ASI!
I did all my conventional gear training on asphalt and didn't realize how wonderful
grass was until about my tenth solo hour.
Congratulations, Lynn!

John, I have been waiting for the guys to set a date. It looks like July,
but don't know when yet. We are, however going to be at the Rans fly-in at
the West Desert Airpark this weekend.

Sorry this is so late, but thought about it as I was in my car going down
the hill to get gas and stuff for the trip.
If yoiu can't make it, I'll post the date as soon as I find it. Mark Ferkin
is our contact man in Idaho - he is in Caldwell.

Wow...looks like I opened a can of...what? fond memories from a lot of
folks here, and I thank you all for sharing your tales of first solo
flights.
Let me back up to the day before my solo. I was told by my instructor
on Sunday that he figured I was 2 or 3 more duals away from letting me
go. Then the next day, we were doing the pre-flight checklist, and
completing that, I reached around behind him to lay the checklist on
the "shelf" behind the seats and saw a hand-held radio laying there. I
immediately went into "brainfart" mode. I knew what the radio
meant...solo was coming today undoubtedly. I made a good takeoff, and
subsequent landing at a nearby, but wider airstrip. All that morning, I
was a zombie, thinking bad thoughts about going up alone....the
"what-ifs" were getting in the way of thinking about flying. Several
times he scolded me for being too high in the pattern....going too wide
on turn to downwind...not getting the carb heat turned on soon
enough....little things, but not my usual stuff in the pattern. Finally
he said, "you're not as relaxed as you were the last two days, what's
wrong?" I told him that as soon as I saw that damn radio, I went into
"duh" mode.
On the day I soloed, I was ready for a solo, because I imagined that it
was going to happen, and was prepared for it. We had a problem with the
fuel pressure gauge, and after I spent some time working on it, I
figured the time was up and was prepared to go home, when he said let's
go around a couple of times, which we did, then "do you want to take it
around?" I think it was the resolution that it wasn't going to happen
today that made me relax, so when he got out I was ready and calm and
wanted to do it, and I did.

Yeah! I missed out on this age-old tradition on my first solo. :-(
So, on the 20th anniversary of the event, I got my current instructor
and good friend Chris to help me re-create the event--this time
including the shift-cutting!
Noel sez:

Amen, brother! There is nothing like either of those experiences!
Congratulations, Lynn!

Jose asks:

Thank you for the kind words, Jose! The new one is a Series 6 that
John McBean helped me get. I had to do something with the insurance
money from the Model IV, right? :-)
Michel asks:
>How is it going?
I have the panel half done and the fuselage is back from being powder
coated. The floor boards and flight controls were previously
installed so those can go back in now, and the wings are almost ready
to cover.
