Subject: Kitfox-List: eastern canada Kitfox owners
I have a model 4 1050 serial number 1642 that I built in 1991-94 if
that is any help.I have a few photos of the wing structure
However I live in New Zealand
Regards Russell ainsworth ZK-KIV
I wish to hear from Kitfox owners in Eastern Canada, the Maritimes. I
live near Halifax in Nova Scotia and have bought a Kitfox IV 1050 built
(very well) by Glen McGuigan of New Brunswick. I have to replace parts
in the wings and while the build manual is reasonably clear it is always
nice to have experienced builders around. I only know one other Kitfox
owner in the area, I'm sure there are a couple more.

Thanks everyone. Here is some additional stuff:
Ron and Graeme, I'd hammer it if ... I had something to hammer! :-)
Graeme and Kurt, I try to find a "local" shop. It's harder than you
think. Nowadays no one makes custom springs. I still wait from an
answer from Oslo. Maybe.
Geir, takk skal du ha. Today is the 4th of July (Congrats, American
friends!) but tomorrow, I'll call again AS to see if they still have
that old model.
Marco, removing the free-castoring also crossed my mind but ... since
last year, I trade my Maule for a Homebuilder. There is nothing to
remove on that model. ;-(
Lowell, I was also looking at the J-3, thinking that, if my spring
broke now, maybe I need two blades. Bushing the bolt is no problem but
... I think it will be to short for two 1/4" blades. So, I should
replace the bolt. But how do I do that, it looks like it is welded to
the fuselage? Sorry, I don't know my plane from the "inside," I didn't
built it myself behind the firewall.
Everyone: Can you confirm that the correct angle of the leaf spring is
45 degrees?
Cheers,
Michel

Michel,
As I recall, the manual suggested gluing the bolt with the 3M structural
adhesive. I wonder if some heat would help ap the bolt out. I hate to
sugget this, but if you were to grind on the bolt it would heat it nicely
and you could tap it out. Unfortunately if the builder did weld it in
place, that would only compound the problem - even shorter bolt.
Interesting, as I write this, I remember I do have one of the old style
single leaf springs in my spare parts bin. What is your time frame and an
address that I can send it to? I could get into the mail or FedX tomorrow.
My wife gets a discount on FedX but the last time we tried it we felt it was
prohibitively expensive - $40 for "How to Fly a Kitfox" to NZ. If you are
interested drop a note.

The floats are Czech 1650's. I'm not sure if anyone else has used them
on the Kitfox but they seem to be a good match. I'll add more photos if
I can get my 9 year old to help me resize them.
The plane will be kept on the lake at my house about 10 miles north of
Lansing and I also have a hangar @ TEW (Mason airport) about 10 miles
south of Lansing.

Thanks, Lowell, that's probably how the builder did it because the rest
of the plane is built "by the book." Actually it was his second Kitfox.
> What is your time frame and an address that I can send it to?
Gosh! I can't believe my luck! I am already receiving new bungees from
Dee, now a spring! What would I be without you guys! This list is the
greatest thing on earth ... and even more if you own a Kitfox! :-)
If you do that (I'll send my address by private email) I'll kiss you
feet (after a shower, of course! :-) and burn two candles to Saint
Lowell. I am extremely grateful.
The thing is: I used the day to find someone here who could make me a
new spring. Finally, I found the only place in Norway (near Oslo) but
they want about USD 700 for this custom-made job, and the delivery is
... end of August. Yes, they also go on holidays, those #/$%"%*! ;-)
Once I have a new spring for the summer, I'll think about a double
spring, like the J-3, something I can do next winter, when there is
hardly any daylight and the cold northern wind blows through your
bones. Brrrr! :-)
Cheers,
Michel

Michel ,
Most springs shops here start with a 1 3/4" wide Springs.
I made one for a guy last year and drilled to pit his kitfox and bent to fit
as well.
He took the liberty of grinding off the extra 1/2 " width with a 5 inch
handheld grinder slowly. He also used a helper leaf.
Leaf springs are bendable and drillable and appear to be somewhat
grindable.
1 1/4 "inch wide springs I could never find but I understand that old
Mennonite buggies use them and if you have any Mennonites around that you
maybe in luck.
I guarantee you that mine will not break anytime
soon...............................................
......
as it on Floats for summer :-)
but if mine does break I would not hesitate to use the method above.

Jeff, and other 912 drivers,
I have been using Clints procedure for nearly two years, and it is great!
Works in 20 degree weather and in 98 degree weather engine hot or cold.
If the engine is warm, I dont use the choke in the pre-oil step.
Clint, I do think you should put your procedure on Sport Fllight and on the
Desert Fox squadron site.

I have a complete startup procedure. First you have to understand why the
engine shakes likes it does. The 912 engine was new and it ignition system
was very simple, you start it with a retarted timing that is 6 degrees
before top dead center. As the engine passes 1000 RPM's it jumps to 26
Degrees BTDC. There are no moving parts in the system and most of the time
the engine is running with most of its power or getting ready to land or
taxi. Here is the problem, the timing pulse that starts the engine fires in
the retarted mode (that is the end of the pulse, but quickly jumps to 26 Deg
BTDC. The 912 ULS or S does not want to get through that phase of starting
and it is just about guaranteed to break something if you keep doing that.
You have to have the engine on full idle to enrichen the mixture to start
and thats the problem.
What you have to do is, have a charge of fuel in the cylinders ready to
fire, and the throttle advanced to jump to at least 2000 RPm's or more. You
can use a primer, I do not like this method as it puts raw fuel into the
intake manifold and if the engine backfires, it could start a fire or at
minimum kick the Carbs out of their boots.
My method for starting is as follows: Set the engine to full idle. Keep
the ign's off pull full choke and crank the engine for 5 seconds. If you
have a veneer throttle adjust it for about 1 1/2 turns in. Wait one full
minute and crank engine. Almost every single time it starts with a bang.
If, If it starts shaking (shut it down immediately) wait 1 minute and
restart.
On shut down, simple (I run the engine to about 3000 RPM's cut the ign
switches and quickly pull the throttle back to idle. I do think that
cutting the spacers on the shock mounts on engine was a very big mistake.
If Shorting them worked, then why not just take them out.
I just had my Prop reduction unit returned to Lockwood for maintance (they
recommend it at 300 hours) I know why. I have almost 800 hours on this
unit, Kary (not sure of spelling) asked me what I have been doing with this
unit. He said it looked as if it were a brand new unit, and what ever it
was keep on doing it.
I have a complete write up for starting and shutting down the engine which I
can put on the Internet if people are interested.
If I'm not mistaken, most of the Guys in the Desert Fox Squadron use this
procedure. I had the carbs come off once in Tracy, about 70 miles away. I
towed the aircraft home, worked on procedure, and it seems to work perfect.
The first time you use this procedure you won't believe how simple and
smooth it is. Clint
300 hours on 912UL, over 800 on 912ULS. No broken engine mounts, no broken
muffler, My kit was purchased in Aug 1993. I think that was the first or
one of the first to use a 912ULS in a Model IV-1200.
If you would like to talk about this, feel free to call anytime. I live on
the coast near Half Moon Bay, Calif (650 712 1802
________________________________________
Clint,
What is your shut down procedure for the 912ULS? Will it work on a 912UL.
Mine shakes on shutdown. I even have the shorter spacers in the engine
mount. Jeff Classic IV 912UL

Hi Michel, I remember a while back there was some discussion on the GPS
you are using in your Fox. I believe it also had other functions such as
mobile phone and email. Can you refresh my memory on this one as my wife
is going to the UK tomorrow and stopping in Hong Kong for a few days, I
though it might be a good opportunity to get a cheep multifunction GPS
such as yours. Does anyone else have any info on similar types of
gadgets that can be loaded with Jepperson or similar soft ware but are
multifunction. I thinks its a great idea that a GPS can double as a
phone as long as both function well.
