      Hello Graeme,

What I have is a Garmin iQue M5 PDA+GPS. In the PDA, I use a program called PocketFMS. See www.pocketfms.com
I am very pleased with the Garmin and the program PocketFMS.

      But first, the PDA.
You can find several PDA. Some have in-built cell phone. Some have in-built GPS.
I don't know if any has both. If you go for a PDA with GSM (cell phone) then
you can still use a Bluetooth connection for a remote GPS. Likewise for a cell
      phone.
PDAs come with Microsoft Mobile Windows 2000 or higher. You can use that to browse
      the internet and send/receive email.
The Garmin M5 is excellent but maybe a bit pricey. You can get PDA+GPS cheaper
like the Mio, Navman or Acer.

      About PocketFMS.
Once you have a PDA, you can test various programs that does about the same but,
IMHO, PocketFMS is the best. It is still free (but with poorer quality maps)
and can be downloaded from the internet. You then use it on your PC to plan
your flights, then you sync with your PDA and your flight plan is now in your
hand, ready to be used with the moving map when flying.
The "high quality" maps requires a "donation" of USD 60. Most people think it's
worth it. But you can try first the free version and see if you like it. Good
      luck.

      Cheers,
      Michel

Ah, but in Europe, they don't even measure in inches! :-) And I need a 1 1/4 wide
spring, otherwise it won't fit in my supporting bracket. Anyway, Lowell is
sending me his spring and ... that's the fastest way to repairs and flying! :-)

Thanks Michel, Im looking at the Garmin iQue 360 A which is the aviation
version of the road map PDA GPS they make. Its incredibly compact but also
incredibly expensive ($AU1400) and Im having difficulty finding out if it
will accept the Jepperson Data base for Australia. I know it comes with the
USA and Europe but there appears to no info for the poor relations down
      under. Thanks for the information.

I have sent you, privately, the address of the Australian agent for PocketFMS,
      Graeme.
The software is based on the worldwide DAFIF data so Australia is coverd but I
don't know how well. I am sure the agent will be able to tell you what to use,
where to find it, etc. Good luck.

Thanks Michel, one last question you might be able to answer for me is are
these PDA/GPS systems generally capable of accepting Jepperson software if
      purchased separately?

I wish to hear from Kitfox owners in Eastern Canada, the Maritimes. I
live near Halifax in Nova Scotia and have bought a Kitfox IV 1050 built
(very well) by Glen McGuigan of New Brunswick. I have to replace parts
in the wings and while the build manual is reasonably clear it is always
nice to have experienced builders around. I only know one other Kitfox
owner in the area, I'm sure there are a couple more.

I am sure we discussed this before but, I have 912 S and am wondering what
type of oil to use? I have motorcycle oil in it now. Is there anything
      better I could use?

I bought a Grand Rapids Sport EFIS in May and started the installation
in my Model 5. I finally finished it June 27th after changing some
things around, making a new panel, and scratching my head a lot.
As I was doing final assembly, I was asked how much longer it was going
to take as the Susquehanna River was going to flood the airport (N13)
again! Crest was expected Thursday afternoon.
I was ready to go by 6 PM (Tues.), but it was pouring. I woke up at 3 AM
to sounds of a downpour and wondered what to do if I couldn't fly out. I
was even concerned about the plane starting at all since I replaced the
keyed ignition switch with a push button and had all the rocker switches
apart twice while I made a new panel. In addition, I wired the EFIS to
      shared terminals.
I couldn't sleep, so @ 5 I turned on the TV and the radar showed
clearing by 7. I was at the airport by then, but was fogged in. The
water was over part of the runway, the airport access road, and was
coming up through the storm drain on the ramp. Flood stage is 19 ft. and
23 ft. floods the storm drain. 24 ft. puts water in my hangar. Crest was
      expected @ 30.
Finally at 8:30 AM, after an hour and a half delay, I pushed my plane
through 8 inches of water with about half of the 2800 foot runway under
water. The engine actually fired, the EFIS worked, and I made the 15
minute flight through the scud at about 400 ft. ATR (above the river)
following it to Danville. It sure looks different barreling down the
      runway toward a lake!
I only have 12 solo hours and this was my first experience flying
      through fog.
Only a Cub got out after me. Many planes were stuck there and parked on
high ground to avoid the water.
Are Kitfoxes always this much fun!!!??
      Ben

What an adventure! Sounds like the stars aligned for you LoL. I remember
cruising down the Susquehanna at 300 feet in an Ultralight ferry-job...even
had to put the plane down in a field and push her into a gas station to
refuel about a mile from the northern bank ;-) Best of luck with your
      retrofitted 'Fox!

No, but there are no listings near here on that site. I was surprised to
go to an apparent kitfox site, and get nude pictures in the photos
      section. What's a FRAPPR anyway?

Sorry to insist, guys, but my holidays start in a few days and I was
      hoping to fly.
Do anyone know what kind of leaf spring I can order from Aircraft
Spruce? I just called them by phone but ... not much info to get there,
      I am afraid.

      If you look at:
      http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/lgpages/leafsprings.php

Set no. 6 (part No. 06-14700) is the right width (1 1/4") and length
between holes but ... there is no info about the angle and the angle is
most important so that my homebuilder tailwheel is just slightly
bending forward of the vertical axis. Otherwise, it is impossible to
have it to free-castor or, if the angle is too much, it will too easily
      go in "reverse" position.

Any comment would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

      Cheers,
      Michel

I just installed one of John's springs on my Model IV. Works great.

Thanks.

      Cheers,
      Michel

I have used Mobile 1 MX4T 10-40 Motorcycyle oil in my 912UL for 150 hours and have
been very pleased with it. This is one of the oils recommended by Rotax.

      Jon,

Log onto the Rotax owners association website at:
      http://www.rotax-owner.com/sdocs.htm

Go to the Service Document Retreival system and using the word search
function type in the key words 912 oil . Near the bottom of the page is
the following document SI-18-1997 which is the latest list of recommeded
oils. Keep in mind that there are different oils recommended for different
temperature ranges and fuels used. There are codes for the recommended oils
in the different range of applications.

I never got the time today to measure the angle of incidence but I was
talking to a long time bush pilot who told me that usually the angle of
incidence will be between 3 and 5 degrees. He also said that after five
degrees any plane will mush before flying and be very squirrelly landing.
I'll try to get the measurements off my plane tomorrow.

I wish to hear from Kitfox owners in Eastern Canada, the Maritimes. I live
near Halifax in Nova Scotia and have bought a Kitfox IV 1050 built (very
well) by Glen McGuigan of New Brunswick. I have to replace parts in the
wings and while the build manual is reasonably clear it is always nice to
have experienced builders around. I only know one other Kitfox owner in the
area, I'm sure there are a couple more.

Does anybody know if my 296 Garmin GPS can be made to read in mph
rather than knots? I tried on the "set-up" page but it doesn't seem to
offer this configuration. It's maddening to see my airspeed indicator
read in mph, and my GPS read in "those boat terms" ....sorry all you
real pilots, but I think in mph, and that's why I ordered my ASI to
read as such. Anybody got a suggestion?

--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Lynn Matteson <lynnmatt@jps.net>

I attended our EAA Chapter 304 meeting tonight, and one of the members
(Tom Cubberly) brought along a DVD with still pictures of the event,
and it was a great-looking/sounding compilation of the pictures of the
event. The guy who Tom hired for the production of the DVD did a great
job on the editing, music, and pacing. He used zooms, pull-backs,
pans...all the stuff that makes an otherwise common slide-show into
      something really worth watching.
The DVD's can be purchased for $10 each, they are labeled with the
event's name on them, including a picture, are 16 minutes long, and I
think the price is well worth it. I've ordered two, and told the
photographer to stand by, hoping that the Kitfoxer's in attendance
might want one. There are shots of 4 of the 5 'foxes that were
there...he only missed Alan Blind's 'fox...sorry Alan! He really
captured the event, I felt, and this comes from a former photographer.
He shows the breakfast, the car show, the planes, the crowd, the models
(yes, my P-40 is there...shameless plug), the (few) motorcycles, more
planes, the MIG jet fly-by, the T-6 fly-by, and on and on....

If anybody wants more info, email me directly, or through the list. I
hope this doesn't come across as a commercial endeavor, just want the
folks to know that the DVD exists, and there you are. : )

      Some very interesting discussions...

Quick update... As some know, we have been planning and proceeding with
moving the company to another location. That location is Homedale Idaho..
As a Kitfox flys it is approx 12.5 miles west of the Caldwell airport and is
located on the Snake River. The excavation has been done, permits in place
and the building should be started shortly... If all goes as planned we will
      be moving in August.

We are also going to be at Oshkosh in the North Aircraft display space 426..
Hope to see a lot of you there...

We are continuing to support the full Kitfox line and will continue to do
so... Our first complete firewall back and firewall forward kit went out
last week and we have several wing kits in progress now.

The rumor that we are discontinuing the Model IV is not technically correct.
The Model IV will be available but will not currently be offered as a kit
      package...

Our focus is currently on a Model we are calling the Super Sport. What is
the Super Sport ? Well as you know Denney had a great idea to produce a
real aircraft that was light, simple and easy to build with great short
field performance and folding wings that evolved into the Model IV....
Along came the Series 5 as a larger and faster Kitfox that allowed for
larger power plants... We are taking advantage of some of the ideas from the
larger Kitfox and bringing it back towards its roots.... The round cowling
is coming back and we are going to introduce a 750 lb empty weight aircraft
that will take advantage of the LSA rule completely with a 1320 gross weight
on it's gear, a 1420 gross weight on floats and a 1550 lb gross weight
      option.

      Lynn,

On the Setup page, tab to the right until you get to UNITS; the first box
is Distance and Speed...switch from Nautical to Statute.
