Hey, that's Nez Perce country, John! No, I have never been there and I am not a
living encyclopedia but Dee has sent me some bungees and a few touristic leaflets
about Idaho.
John, after I asked about the leaf spring, several listers wrote me privately that
I should ask you. Of course, I should. But I figured that a direct email to
you woulnd't go faster than the list and that you were reading both.
Now it is too late, Lowell has sent me his spare spring by FedEx, but next time
I need something, I'll ask you first. Like all Kitfox owners, I am very grateful
that you took over the company and keep on supporting us. Next time I need
something be assured that you will be the first one I ask.
Cheers,
Michel

Lynn,
I use a 196 and I think it about the same as 296 except for the colour
screen.
go to Main menu -- push twice
Setup
then you will have tabs on top scroll sideways and set all tabs as req'd.
You can set text size , alarm, alerts, obstacles etc.
If you are new to this gps , play with it lots and you will find
everything you need.
I also find that the remote antenna works much faster and more consistant
than the little stubby antenna.
Hope this helps you and don't forget to take your charts with you as the GPS
should not be your only source for Navaids.

Clint,
I was just reviewing your photos I saved from 2002. Do you have a part
number (J. C. Whitney) for the landing light. I also assume you have a
seperate switch and circuit breaker for it? Thanks. Jeff Classic IV

Jeff,
Bill Willyard (on this list) has a pretty nice landing light - with position control.
I took the attached photo at the JXN fly-in.
I don't think Bill will mind we sharing.
I don't know what bulb he used but he's pretty resourceful.

Brad,
I see you have no answers yet. I have a Series 5/7 with Grove gear, so I
probably don't qualify to answer you. But If I toss something out, someone
will write to tell me I am wrong.
I had about 40 hours in a Champ. And then no flying for 6 years with a move
and building. I had a heck of a time getting my feet back into it. I could
not believe I had gotten so rusty. The Fox was much more responsive than
the Champ. Now, I can't believe that I had any trouble at all. There is so
much control available that I feel the plane can do anything. After 120
hours, I am still trying to become as competent as the plane. I feel it is
a real pussy cat to land.
One issue is the alignment of the main gear. You want neutral or slight toe
out. But get current!
Randy
PS Normal cruise for a IV with 80 hp is about 220 mph. ;-)

Hi Everybody,
I'm new here. Just sold my Cherokee 180 and am in the market for either a
IV-1200 or a RANS S6. So I thought I might find some help on the IV-1200.
2 questions for starters:
1) Is the IV a relatively tame taildragger? I haven't flown TD in 4 years.
Before that had 60 hours in a Fisher Classic and 140 hours in Hatz biplane.
2) What kind of cruise should I expect with a 80 or 100hp Rotax. (I know
that varies a lot, just curious about general ranges).
Thanks!
Brad

When I first started to fly my Classic IV , I COULDN'T!!! Had not flown a
tailwheel in about 20 years. Took 10 hours instruction in a Citabria and
that fixed the problem. My Classic IV was a bit more tweeky than the
Citabria. My first impression of the Kitfox was, it was a beast.... Now,
it's like a kitten but always needs watching.

All,
I mentioned in an earlier e-mail that I had aquired a set of titanium tie
downs through a friend who had also bought a set and said I would post the
mfg. Unfortunatly he was not able to remember where we had purchased from
either so I did a little research and came up with the following. They look
to be the exact one's I have, I have been satisfied with mine (A note: They
look like the screw in type used for dogs but the dog one's are not strong
enough, I used them before buying these and have had them break.)

Thanks, Dave and RDM....I must've not looked far enough on the "setup"

"tethered" to 5 local grass strips at the present time. I'm getting to
recognize those strips now from several miles away and only 2,000 ft up.

John I will have to agree with you there. And I think the obstacle

the place.
Now if we could only get tailwinds enroute - we would be all set.

All technology makes us lazy..but is does it make us safer, that's the
question. The new generation aircraft we fly today are very automated,
we older pilots tend to scoff at the automation but I notice the younger
guys are straight into it?? I for one old sod (might be lazy) tend to
love the new technology even if I struggle at time to understand it and
think the GPS is the greatest navigation aid ever made thus far..John A.

I think we all have read a story or heard of someone getting into trouble when
their GPS goes south. Most often than not, they were puting their faith in one
instrument. I certainly agree that we as pilots should know how to dead reckon...keep
the map in our laps and look at it from time to time...etc. However,
utilizing the technology we have available to us should be embraced.
I have been an Industrial Technology Teacher at the secondary level for the last
15 years. I have seen this over & over as teachers (and parents) buck the
fears of using a computer...curriculum not changing fast enough to keep up with
industry standards...and my personal favorite...students running circles around
staff members when it comes to computer operations.
Learning to use new technologies does require a bit of learning. Buy a book,
get a video, or grab a buddy to help. Baulking at it will not make it go away
and just date you (I'm sure thats fine with some), however, as John mentioned...using
new technology does make us safer. Yes, it can get us into trouble if
we don't know how to use it right. So do your homework as there will certainly
be a test that follows...in the cockpit.
As I plan my instrument panel and cabin resources...redundancy in most everything
is a requirement in my mind (as most do, I'm sure) I will have a panel GPS
as well as a hand held on a Ram mount for back-up. You see, I also put alot
of stock in being lazy. :>)

Lynn,
GPS are great but they will make you lazy.
Dead reckoning is what you need to know ( incase) and of course wx briefing.

Folks,
I am getting ready to mount up my motor (Geo 3 cylinder) and I need to order
the tubing. What size tubing should I get? I have the 582 mount for
reference, but without cutting into it, I have no idea as to the wall
thickness.
Also, does anyone have the thrust line for the Kitfox Model 2? My manual has
no reference to it. I know where the 582 sat in relation, but are there hard
numbers?
Also, is th4ere any thrust offset? Most are down and to the side. Any idea
what it should be?
Thanks,
Bradley

Oh boy... - 300 -500 foot obstacles - that even gets better where we have some
which you can see AFTER breaking out of the soup on top doing an instrument
departure at one of our local airports in Minne-snow-ta. We think they might
be a bit taller yet. No doubt about it, some steelworkers have had a lot of
job security over the years.
Then we can go back to the redundancy thing too - maybe the GPS W/ OB data
plus a chart with those funny little blue numerals giving MEFs for easy
planning. Probably not a real bad idea to embrace both the new way and the
old way of doing it at the same time. Helps if both the chart & GPS database
are current too, plus a quick notam check - occasionally those goofy steel
towers have the lights off for maintenance and they become somewhat more
difficult to see in the dark - that may be where the GPS OB data can really
be useful.
Got a question... How many people actually fly their cross countries in that
300-500 foot level?

300 to 500-foot towers...child's play compared to the 1040-foot tower
just east of where I live/fly. It is just northwest of Chelsea,
Michigan. That damn thing will really get your attention on the GPS.
All the other towers in the vicinity are depicted in yellow, and that
one is red...a real attention getter. I flew over in that direction the
other day, and the number of towers popping up made it look like a
graveyard...an apt description if one doesn't pay heed.

List,
Just installed the new KingFox (21x12x8) tires on the KF.. They look GREAT! Roll
off my grass field is great.. on landing however, I did my typical 3pt landing...and
bounced at least 3 times.. (so now I am current).
Wondering if this is normal (got to learn to slick it in again) or does anyone
recommend a specific tire pressure.. I may have them too hard 8-10lbs psi...

John the step is not the most important part to locate. the centre of
flotation is. The CG of the plane should be directly over the centre of
flotation. Angle of incidence should be less than 5 deg mine is 1.45 deg.

We do. But we are generally a flight of at least two - four eyes, and most
likely a flight of four. Of course this is over the ununhabited western
part of the US.
