Hey, that's Nez Perce country, John! No, I have never been there and I am not a living encyclopedia but Dee has sent me some bungees and a few touristic leaflets about Idaho. John, after I asked about the leaf spring, several listers wrote me privately that I should ask you. Of course, I should. But I figured that a direct email to you woulnd't go faster than the list and that you were reading both. Now it is too late, Lowell has sent me his spare spring by FedEx, but next time I need something, I'll ask you first. Like all Kitfox owners, I am very grateful that you took over the company and keep on supporting us. Next time I need something be assured that you will be the first one I ask. You can set text size , alarm, alerts, obstacles etc. If you are new to this gps , play with it lots and you will find everything you need. I also find that the remote antenna works much faster and more consistant than the little stubby antenna. Hope this helps you and don't forget to take your charts with you as the GPS should not be your only source for Navaids. I have a Series 5/7 with Grove gear, so I probably don't qualify to answer you. But If I toss something out, someone will write to tell me I am wrong. I had about 40 hours in a Champ. And then no flying for 6 years with a move and building. I had a heck of a time getting my feet back into it. I could not believe I had gotten so rusty. The Fox was much more responsive than the Champ. Now, I can't believe that I had any trouble at all. There is so much control available that I feel the plane can do anything. After 120 hours, I am still trying to become as competent as the plane. I feel it is a real pussy cat to land. One issue is the alignment of the main gear. You want neutral or slight toe out. But get current! Just sold my Cherokee 180 and am in the market for either a IV-1200 or a RANS S6. So I thought I might find some help on the IV-1200. 2 questions for starters: 1) Is the IV a relatively tame taildragger? I haven't flown TD in 4 years. Before that had 60 hours in a Fisher Classic and 140 hours in Hatz biplane. 2) What kind of cruise should I expect with a 80 or 100hp Rotax. (I know that varies a lot, just curious about general ranges). Thanks! Most often than not, they were puting their faith in one instrument. I certainly agree that we as pilots should know how to dead reckon...keep the map in our laps and look at it from time to time...etc. However, utilizing the technology we have available to us should be embraced. I have been an Industrial Technology Teacher at the secondary level for the last 15 years. I have seen this over & over as teachers (and parents) buck the fears of using a computer...curriculum not changing fast enough to keep up with industry standards...and my personal favorite...students running circles around staff members when it comes to computer operations. Learning to use new technologies does require a bit of learning. Buy a book, get a video, or grab a buddy to help. Baulking at it will not make it go away and just date you (I'm sure thats fine with some), however, as John mentioned...using new technology does make us safer. Yes, it can get us into trouble if we don't know how to use it right. So do your homework as there will certainly be a test that follows...in the cockpit. As I plan my instrument panel and cabin resources...redundancy in most everything is a requirement in my mind (as most do, I'm sure) I will have a panel GPS as well as a hand held on a Ram mount for back-up. You see, I also put alot of stock in being lazy. :>) Dan Billingsley Mesa, AZ Model IV / 912S www.azshowersolutions.com/Kitfox1.html John Anderson wrote: --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "John Anderson" All technology makes us lazy..but is does it make us safer, thats the question. What size tubing should I get? I have the 582 mount for reference, but without cutting into it, I have no idea as to the wall thickness. Also, does anyone have the thrust line for the Kitfox Model 2? My manual has no reference to it. I know where the 582 sat in relation, but are there hard numbers? Also, is th4ere any thrust offset? Most are down and to the side. Any idea what it should be? We think they might be a bit taller yet. No doubt about it, some steelworkers have had a lot of job security over the years. Then we can go back to the redundancy thing too - maybe the GPS W/ OB data plus a chart with those funny little blue numerals giving MEFs for easy planning. Probably not a real bad idea to embrace both the new way and the old way of doing it at the same time. Helps if both the chart & GPS database are current too, plus a quick notam check - occasionally those goofy steel towers have the lights off for maintenance and they become somewhat more difficult to see in the dark - that may be where the GPS OB data can really be useful. Got a question... How many people actually fly their cross countries in that 300-500 foot level? It is just northwest of Chelsea, Michigan. That damn thing will really get your attention on the GPS. All the other towers in the vicinity are depicted in yellow, and that one is red...a real attention getter. I flew over in that direction the other day, and the number of towers popping up made it look like a graveyard...an apt description if one doesn't pay heed.
