Interesting, Mike and Dave. In Norway, except when landing or taking
off, 500 ft AGL is the minimum anywhere, even in the middle of the sea!
But, don't be surprised, Norway is the country where nearly everything
is forbidden and what is not becomes automatically compulsory! :-)

Could be, Paul. I used to have great admiration for Adobe products but
now, they are messing with them. In any case, I have, from my employer,
a laptop PC with Win XP and the Adobe CS version of all of their
programs, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat. Almost daily, I
move PDF files from that workstation to my private Mac and I don't
experience any problem.

Hey, this is a great start! Several years ago a bunch of us met for
drinks and dinner at the Acey Ducey lounge, an old pilot hangout in the
residential area of old Oshkosh. Supposedly all the Oshkosh biggies,
Steve Whitman, Paul Poberezny, etc used to spend a lot of time there
swapping lies. Lots of memorabilia and character. I'll be driving so
it wouldn't be difficult to play taxi driver if we can organize a
day/time. Googling should bring up a map.

Hi guys:
I'm hoping to be at Acey Ducey friday night sometime around 8:30, but
otherwise if any of you want a gathering place come out to the seaplane
base
for the Annual Watermelon Social (pig roast, Beer/soda, a commemorative
glass WipAire beer mug, and door prizes - all for $15) Best party at
Oshkosh. Of course I'm opinionated as I'm in charge of the Seaplane
Base.
Oh yeah, you can ride the seaplane bus both ways from the main field for
$2.
The bus is located south of the ultralight runway and runs every half
hour.
But buy your tickets at the base as soon as you can as we only sell 500
tickets. And when they're gone they're gone.
It certainly would be nice to put faces with names!

We will have a tent at our show space (426). As one of
the new owners of Kitfox I'll be spending a lot of time
there. I thought I might find some kind of bulletin board
at Wal Mart Sunday. We will post any events, messages and
so on. Look forward to Acey Ducey, and meeting all of you.

I won't be flying my IV in this year (tough without wings, engine, landing gear...),
yet I will be flying right seat in an RV-6A from AZ. We will be pulling
in Monday morning and staying 3 or 4 days. A good place to congregate would be
the new Kitfox LLC booth. Count me in if a happening develops.

tell Mike Fisher "Hi" from John Kerr and Phil Swensen of UT. We won't be flying
in this year because of a health problem with one of Phil's grandkids. We spent
a lot of time with Mike and John King in the Kitfox area in '99, I believe.
It is amazing the sence of togetherness that is felt at this and similar venues.

Sorry Jeff As I said there was so much going on and so many faces my
feeble memory could not keep up. I believe they flew in and camped under
wing, but I had to start keeping a list just to get the names. The Oshgosh
crowd could make good use of cell phones with chargers, and a camera that
can be kept handy. I wish I had gotten pics of each owner by their planes.

Hey Deke, I'm looking for someone to be the "legal" PIC aboard my plane
for the trip over. My instructor has given me his blessing on making
the trip (I'm still a student pilot, although with over 20 hrs solo in
the 'fox), but of course I need a "real" pilot on board to be legal.
I'm still looking into the logistics of the whole thing....4 trips
there in my motorhome don't count much when going by air, I'm learning.

Hi John-
I spoke with you a couple of years ago, just before I started my IV
kit. Can you tell me about camping under the wing of ones' own plane in
the experimental area? I noticed that you and several others' 'foxes
were parked together, but separate from another batch of 'foxes. Can
anyone who has camped with his/her plane bring me up to date?
Lynn
p.s. I got out of my jury duty for this trip...

Hi Notice member is fitting up a Suzi Geo 3 cyl , I am in throws of
fitting up 1.3 liter 4 cyl efi into Australian Aeropup which is a
somewhat related to the Kitfox ie Kitfox and the now defunct Oz Skyfox
was originally a joint venture to produce kitfoxes in Oz but they did
not pass the load tests so the Skyfox ended up as a beefed up Kitfox,
the production manager at Skyfox was then employed by me to design the
Aeopup see www.aeropup.com they have mainly been using Jabirus, 4 and
6 cly, 912's Subarus and VW and now we are doing the Suzi thing, any
feedback from members using these would be greatly appreciated.

believe it or not, the tent is about 20 years old. When I went through all my
stuff, I found my new tent was much heavier that this one, so I brought this one,
than later on I was looking at the plane from a distance and said, wow, the
colors all match, cool.

I got my one-piece t'deck from LP Aeroplastics. You make the former
t'deck a one-piece, then attach the LP version, bubble window, to it.

I know this is a very long shot but does anyone have a set of 850x6 tubes they
aren't using or don't want? I have had a set on order from Cheif for a couple
months now and they are telling me it will be at least the end of this year,
first of next before they start making them again. My plane is not flying yet
but at this rate, I figure I better start looking now or I won't be flying for
many years to come...at least on my 850's. I guess I could go with the 800's
(they are in stock) if I can't find any of the 850's but I am hoping someone
has a pair they aren't using.
thanks,
Darin

Try Dessler Tire. It's a big outfit that focuses on aviation and I can't
imagine them not having what you need.

I think your instructor is right. I can't cite the FAR # but I recall from my
student pilot days that instructor had to "sign off" on every new airport before
student can fly there solo. There are a bunch of blank sign-off forms in the
back of your log book for this very purpose.

What do the FARs say? I know up here in the great white, not this time of
year, north it would be illegal until a pilot permit is issued.
How long is your flight to Osh Lynn? I might try it next year on floats.

Lynn,
The Experimental parking area next to the flightline cannot be used for
camping or sleeping under the wing. The camp ground area is used for
that purpose. Sometimes the camp ground area will be filled, but they
usually will tell you that on the radio when flying in over Ripon. When
the camp ground area is filled they will only allow show planes in. My
cell number is (540) 219-3543

No doubt he is correct. I flew (alone) for a lot of years before I took my
check ride, but once I had successfully made my Xcountry solo flight I could
go where I pleased. Never had a radio ,so that wasn't a problem. Sectionals
and a compass don't quit working.
But things change a lot in 40 years. Listen to your instructor, take your
check ride, and make it alone next year. Best wishes. Larry Huntley

Subject: | Re: Oshkosh 2006? |
Back in '98 I flew N24ZM from south Florida to Oshkosh while still a student pilot.
What I did was find a local instructor who had always wanted to go but never
had the chance. The instuctor wasn't tail wheel qualified so we got him checked
out so we were legal. It was a great trip and I got to do a bit of instructing
as well because I had to coach him through most of his landings:) I logged
about 25 hrs of cross country dual.

Subject: | Student pilot solo to Oshkosh 2006? |
FAR 61.93 - The distance and state is not the issue. The flight instructor
has to feel that you have the experience to safely conduct the flight and he
signs your logbook specifically based on known weather conditions.
As an instructor, I can tell you that I would not endorse any student for
that trip and certainly not into the Oshkosh airport. There are many
experienced pilots who will not fly into Oshkosh and many who have only
flown in once. I would prefer not to be alone so that I had additional sets
of eyes if possible. I think it's a great idea to fly in with someone else
before acting as PIC.
Remember that students are not allowed to fly into certain busy terminal
areas solo - Oshkosh is busier than all of them.

I think your instructor is right. I can't cite the FAR # but I recall from
my student pilot days that instructor had to "sign off" on every new airport
before student can fly there solo. There are a bunch of blank sign-off forms
in the back of your log book for this very purpose.

My instructor says that going that distance, alone, out-of-state,
whatever, is against the rules of the "student pilot certificate"...is
he wrong?

You are correct, Marco....I just got signed off for 5 grass strips
within 25nm from my home base. Next are fields within 50nm, then
pavement (according to the instructor)...I haven't found a FAR that
says that I can't go to Osh alone, but common sense tells me I
shouldn't....dammit!

It's about 420 miles, going around the "horn"...Chicago that is. I used
my GPS to measure from my place to a spot just west of Chicago's mode C
veil, then north to Osh. I recall that it was about 430 - 450 by ground
vehicle.

24ZM, eh?....sounds familiar....I think I got a ride in that plane when
it was here in Michigan, just before the new owner took it out to
California. Deke flew it in here and Duane (new owner) left it in my
hangar for a month before taking it west...nice job Danny....REAL nice.
My instructor tells me that if Oshkosh was a month later, I'd be going
on my own, but he instructs me part-time, and flies for American
Airlines, so not able to give me the finishing steps for the Sport
Pilot Certificate in the next two weeks...what a shame...but I'll find
a way to get it up there, if I have to let someone else take
it....nahhhhh!

Lynn,
Another option if the experimental camping is full is to fly in as an
ultralight and land in the ultralight field and camp there. There always
seems to be plenty of room there for planes and camping. I flew my fox
in there for several years that way, no radio communication needed, just
need to call ahead to verify the field is open. You also get to fly in
staying under 300 AGL, a real blast and the grass strip is plenty big
enough for a fox.

Tried Desser...they are out of stock also. They don't have any 850's in stock
regardless of brand. I think I have tried nearly all the major suppliers and
some of the not so major ones. It is the same story everywhere...something to
do with McCreary and Goodyear loosing their rubber supplier and having to produce
new molds, etc. This bites!

When you are not over a "built-up area" you can fly 2 feet off the
ground as long as that leaves you 500 feet from any person, vessel,
vehicle or structure and you could safely land from there.
