Subject: | vibration and noise |
To All
I have a model 1 with 503, Hegar cog belt drive.
There is a good vibration at 4000 to 5500 rpm.
I have changed the bearings in the propeller pulley, put a new belt on
it. Checked the pitch on the propeller and checked the motor mounts. All
seems to be ok.
CHT and exhaust temps are in the normal range.
The noise sounds like a screeching sound. And only occurs after leaving
the ground and doesn't stop till back on the ground again. And does it
all rpms while in the air.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks Jeff Scovill

The reply about all the airplanes on the ground more than in the air is right on.
I went to an outing last night for the WPA(washington pilots association)
and found that most pilots I talked to have only flown 4 times this year or less.
I couldn't resist the brag of 140 flights this year so far. They just looked
at me with envy. I told them that I was feeling the effects of not flying
yesterday because the outing was bitting into my flying time. I also mentioned
that when I fly for an hour I use about 4 gallons of fuel, now that really
got there attention. Flying certified airplanes is very expensive and the joy
is ripped right out because face it, those tin cans are just not fun to fly,
besides most are flown over 4000 agl. So what do we get in return, very rusty
pilots that go up to justify having a pilots license in the first place. You
always know that they are the rusty ones by the radio talk and the airline approaches.
I do my best to give way to these pilots.

It was a factory part. The engineer ( who does contract work for GM ) said
that sometimes a part will miss a step in the manufacturing process and he
suspects that is what happened here.

I've been told of a camp closer to the flight line, so I'm gonna try
that one this year....if it doesn't work out, I'll go to Scholler. I'm
planning on starting out early Sunday morning, but as our friend Duane
might point out, that may turn into a late Saturday departure. (I
sometimes get too antsy waiting for the "green flag" and need to get
some distance between me and home.)

I wouldn't count on getting a decent spot at any of those flightline camps
at this late date Lynn. I've talked to people who get in "weeks" ahead of
time. Might get lucky though. If you take a bicycle, anyplace in camp
Scholler is close.

Does anyone know the approximate angle of attack for a Series 7 at level
cruise, 912s.
This is for the purpose of mounting a remote compass.
Thanks

It is a function of weight distribution among other things, but
basically it is a variable. You should be able to assume that it is
level with the bottom of the door cut out. I don't know much about
remote compasses but it must be able to handle some variation in
attitude. It should be accurate when the tail wheel is on the ground.

Right you are, Deke....yeah, almost forgot about the bike thing. In
fact the bike that I have was purchased right up there near OSH, while
Duane and I were out cruising around, charging up the MH
batteries....say, I'm thinking of taking the ferry across...any words
of wisdom? I took it from Wis. to MIch. back in about '87, so I'm
familiar with the drill, but that was with a car, not a small motorhome.

Your AOA is going to vary with speed and load. Not trying to be smart,

Here is an APROX that should be close....?
from the center of the leading edge to trailing edge will be your zero, then
at about 3 or 4 degrees, you should be darn close....

Can't help you on that one Lynn. I know some people take the ferry, but I
don't know from where or how much or where it goes. I would think when you
factor in the waiting time and cost of the ferry, you might be just as well
off to drive around the bottom of Lake Michigan and right on up to Oshkosh.
Just a thought.
I just Googled "Lake Michigan Ferry" and got a ton of hits. You should be
able to find out what you need there.

I just went to the S.S. Badger site (Ludington, MI to Manitowoc,
WI...four hours) and found out that it is a ~$280 round-trip for me and
my MH...not cheap, but factor in that "orange cone" drive through
Chicago, and it might be money well spent....am I getting old when I
start thinking about saving wear and tear on the old bod/brain by
spending money? Must be....gonna wait until I pick up the Trip-ticks at

I made this trip a few years back in a car and it was a nice trip and a change
of pace. Plus I didn't haver to deal with Chiago. I don't remember it being
this expensive.

Subject: | Polytone over old polytone with carnauba |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: icaza francisco <franicaza@yahoo.com.mx>
I want to paint some orange lines with polytone over
my wings already painted with the same material. For a
pair of years I have used carnauba to keep surfaces
protected. Does anyone know how I could clean the
surface to remove carnauba before painting it?
I appreciate,
Francisco Icaza.

Check your blade tracking??? Also do not just limit it to an engine
problem.
