Guys! ... I think there has been a misunderstanding.

Someone wanted to know how many taildraggers, etc. among us.
I answered that the best way to do this is to start a poll on the
Matronics Forum because they provide such a poll tool.

Most of you have answered to this List and not to the Forum, which sums
      up the number of "votes."
I don't know if anyone is gathering the information written here and do
some statistics but I am not.

Should we all go to the Forum:
      http://forums.matronics.com/viewforum.php?f=8

and start again by selecting one of the items on the three polls:
One for the type of Kitfox
One for the type of engine
One for the type of gear

      Cheers,
      Michel

I am running an EA 81 with std dist but have dual trigger units, ign units a

HI Guys, I seem to have a real problem with the ignition CDI's on my NSI. I
have absolutely no spark at all and suspect that both black boxes have
finally succumbed to the salt water they were sitting in for several hours
when we had our unscheduled swim at Christmas time.. Has anyone ever changed
these CDI ignition systems to a conventional distributor and coil?. I have
heard that the traditional Subaru distributor can be retro fitted with dual
points. If this is correct it might be a sensible alternative for me to
consider due to the NSI replacement CDI's being no longer available. My
engine is the standard NSI EA 81 non turbo and there is still provision on
the engine to fit a distributor. Any comments would be appreciated as I
don't want to be out of the air for another 6 months. Im just starting to
      have fun again. Thanks guys.

      Regards
      Graeme

Graeme, it's very possible that the salt water got in them and corroded things
up. Probably not much left of them. Too bad about that.
As for replacements, you might try contacting Mikal Templeman at Stratus to see
what ignition he's using. I'm sure his would work fine on your engine.
Stay with me and I'll do what I can to help you get back in the air.

I have a self powered asphalt roller that does a good job. I also put together
a 9' articulated roller. What I mean is that it's in three sections so that
when going around corners it works like a differential and doesn't dig into the
ground. It's filled with concrete and probably weighs in the neighborhood of
6000 lbs. Definitely flattens anything it rolls over.
I'll be selling the asphalt roller if anyone wants it. Includes a trailer.

Nuts to trying that version of this poll...my plane is a IV, Jabiru

I do believe that you can do the work as long as an A&P or person with a IA
      rating supervises the work.

Maintenance on a homebuilt can only be done by an A&P or a person holding a
repairmans cert for that plane. Aka the builder. Not just anybody can do
      the maintenance

I recently had my 5 signed off. I did my weight and balance using a set
of scales and came up with a total weight of 868 lbs. That is what is
listed on my weight & balance (which the DAR took a copy)and also on the
data plate. I later found out there was reason to suspect the scales.
Last night weighed the airplane on a set of calibrated scales and came
up with 833 lbs. My question is there anything I need to do other than
carry the revised W&B in the airplane. What about the data plate?

You might think about doing nothing. I put some work into mine, but now do not
      think it was worth while.

I made a long drag out of 30 ' irrigation pipe and old dozer blades. It did do
a good job of knocking the tops off of high places and leaving the
dirt in low places. And turned up a few rocks.

But I have landed other places in my field and across the runway when there are
high winds and the Fox and the large tires I have handle the
bumps real well. I do try to mow abit for friends who don't have big tires, but
I don't worry about my Fox any more.

My big problem is that I still misjudge height and drop in from too high some times.

I think I would look into an alternative electronic replacement. You
have the hardest part already mounted on the engine and that's the dual
pick up. Check with Electra motive, not sure on the spelling. You should
be able to adapt something. Hey will be fun to figure it out. Yes you
can go to a single ignition distributor, junk yard, after market
possible, pretty straight forward just get a service manual and you
should be in business. Not real crazy about just having one ignition
though, stuff happens. You can test the coil boxes with a pulse
generator to see if they failed. I think all the connectors are a real
      suspect point to check first.

I am pretty sure you can do the work yourself and log it into your required
log books without any A&P supervision. If you do not hold a repairmans
certificate (you didn't build the plane) then you must have a certified A&P
to sign off the annual condition inspection. I haven't looked into this
lately but I'm almost certain that is the way it used to be. Even on
certified aircraft, the owner is allowed to do certain maintenance without
      an A&P.

i would appreciate a poll of who has what engines that are currently flying and
how many actually have nose and tail wheels.

      thanks,

We have been flying a IV in SW Ontario out of a grass strip for about 6
years now. After going through a period of groundloops, none of which
thankfully damaged the plane, we eventually removed the full castoring
function from the tail wheel and replace the springs to the rudder with
compression springs. We have never had a ground loop in the 2 years since
but we do need to devise a manual method to disengage the tail wheel
tracking and restore full castoring for handling the plane in the hangar and
on the ramp. The plane now tracks straight on the grass on landing without
a lot of rudder input and x-winds are not a problem. However, she is still
definitely twitchy on paved surfaces regardless of the wind conditions and
we need to be very alert and very quick but smooth on the rudders to avoid
exciting roll-outs. Result is where I have the option at an airfield, I
will land on grass with a x-wind rather than in to wind on pavement.

      Trevor,

I have a IV in Ontario as well and my tailwheel locks straight ahead
and I also has the compression springs. Mine will breakway on turns
unless you don't grease it often then it becomes hard to break free.
I had to fly in a strip this morning to do some service for a guy.I
landed on his runway 17 on grass wind 100 @ 9 knots, when I left it
was 13 gust 18 knots 090 and when i took off the tailwheel has no
tendacy to kick out on the TO roll at all.

Does anyone have experience comparing the handling of a homebuilders
special tailwheel to the MATCO 6-inch tailwheel that came with the KF
Model IV. The hardness of the rubber on both seems to be about the same,
and I'm wondering if there is any advantage in handling by switching
from the MATCO to the homebuilders special.

That is correct, Clem. However, I tried first to have all info in one
poll. But - as KitfoxMike pointed out, at the very moment I was doing
that - the poll tool allows only for one entry. I then had to make
three different polls, one for the type of Kitfox, a second for the
type of engine and a third for tri-gear vs. tail-dragger.
The three polls have the same title: Poll: "Which plane, engine and
gear configuration, please?" to indicate that they are part of the same
      poll, only with different choices.
The reason I gave the Kitfox forum as a link is that the one you are
giving is only one of the three.
... yes, I know, it gets complicated! :-)

Lynn, nothing special for the Macintosh, once on the forum, select one
of the three: "Poll: Which plane, engine and gear configuration,
please?" titles and the voting poll is on the top. Currently, ten
people have entered their type of Kitfox.

I would like to add that, as Ben says, there is also frappr to show
where we live. The Poll was only to know the percentage of
tail-draggers, etc. in our group. The problem with the forum is that,
everything on this list is mirrored to the forum. Since this list is
very, very active (I am on several lists but this one is about 70% of
what comes every day in my mailbox) there are many, many entries in the
Forum and it's not easy to find it's way around.

In any case, it tells me a few things:
      1) Please, change title when the subject changes, but not otherwise,
      2) Add - do not archive - when you feel it is not necessary (off-topic
      or humour), and
      2) Thanks to Matronics for a great list/forum. It gives us all the
tools to make this gathering of Kitfox builders and pilots a great
place. We just have to learn how to use it correctly.

      Dear 'Wingnut':

Don't despair. Before you get all depressed, know this: Sometimes, the
trim gets stuck not because of a mechanical failure, but because the
rocker-switch gets worn-out. Obviously, it's intelligent to check all
possible points of failure, for safety's sake, but I would start with the
switch. So, FYI, here's a method for bringing a switch back into service:

Tools needed: Flat head screwdriver, phillips head screwdriver, a bit of
sandpaper or contact cleaning solution, good lighting, shop magnet (very
useful if you drop small springs on the hangar floor), and a good pot of
      coffee (America's favorite drug!!).

      1. Remove the side access-plate on your center cosole.
      2. Stick your hand in there, underneath the switch (make sure master is
off!) and pinch the plastic tabs holding it in place. You should now be
able to pop it out of it's recess.
      3. Crack open the plastic switch casing. OPEN IT SLOWLY AND CAREFULY.
There are springs in there that might pop out.
      4. Look at the mechanism. If you notice, there is a rocker in there that
moves two springs on either end that push a 'contact cylinder' or 'tab' to
      make contact (close the circuit).
      5. These springs sometimes get compressed, and fail to push the contact
cylinders all the way. So, carefully pull the contact cylinders out, and
put them in a safe place. Next, pull the springs out. What you want to do
now is gently stre-e-e-e-e-tch them to make them just a bit longer (without
warping them). Next, with a bit of sandpaper, or contact cleaning solution,
you want to clean the contacts (which might be carbonized).
      6. Put the switch back together. Now, turn on the master and test it.
Voil! Hopefully, it should be almost good as new, and ready to give you
      many more hours of service.

While you're at it, open the access hatch in the tail section, and make sure
the trim mechanism looks good (use the builder's manual as reference). Move
it up and down, and make sure it travels correrctly. And most importantly,
make sure THAT THE TRIM-MOTOR SERVICE BULLETIN IS COMPLIED
WITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literally, your life depends on
      it.

I know you feel depressed and overwhelmed right now. But, when you own an
experimental, "hands-on" is the nature of the game, even if you didn't build
      it.
When you make your first repair, and realize that YOU CAN DO IT, you'll be
very happy and it will seriously BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE.
Then, when you realize that you just saved hundreds of dollars that you
would have had to pay an A&P, you'll feel even better!!!!

I hope this avoids you having to trailer it.

      Best of luck,

      Tony.

Sounds like price-fixing, which sounds illegal.

Many insurance brokers will shop around for quotes each year for you.
If the various underwriters shared pricing there would be no point in
      such an activity, right?

Then again, the insurance world is heavily regulated (in the U.S.
anyway) and the rules may be different. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I
      play one on T.V.

That's because things go south a lot faster in an airplane, Michel.

Hooray for me! I finally figured out how to use this poll...and believe
me it's, a B--CH! No wonder we have only 7-11 or so entries so far.
This thing is far from intuitive...witness the fact that we have 11
planes, but only 5 engines, and all 5 are taildraggers....somebody is
running around out there with no engine...and Jabiru is leading the
pack!...and Gary Algate hasn't even voted yet.

Here's what I discovered: if you go to the address Michel provided,
        http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=57305#57305.

then by changing the last numbers of the address from 57305 to 57337
(model), and then to 57308 (engine), and finally to 57309 (gear
configuration), you will be able to "vote" for all three categories.

As I said, I found this thing to be far from intuitive, but then, I
own a Mac, and you know what they say about Mac users, we don't follow
the crowd...and other than Michel, we're not very smart. : )

Now I'm gonna go drink a Bud and forget about this stuff for a
while...too damn windy, overcast, hazy, gettin' too stormy to
      fly....ratz!

Sorry Michel, I didn't see the other addresses that you provided...they
were way down the page from the first one, and I'd all but given up by
      then. : )

Yup, I discovered that too, Mike. The trouble is, I don't go to the web
very often, preferring to get all of this great info via email...who
needs all the pretty pictures and color graphics, and cutesy little
icons and all that crap, when the words that people say are what is
      important (off soap box now).
Hell, I'd even forgotten that I had signed on as a member of the
      Matronics Forum on the web.

this is the best pic of my wheel, not sure what it is, but it works great. Just
for a tip, on landing with a tail wind, I know somebody mentioned having troubles
doing such a thing. When I land with the wind at my back, you fly in as
normal, don't slow up more, cause the landing speed will be faster, you maintain
normal glide and decent and when your ready to flair, put in an extra amount
of power, just a little, cause if you don't, chances are you will drop out
about 5 ft off the ground, at least in my plane you do. Another thing, be ready
on the rudder, cause your going to be a little faster than normal on the roll
out, so correct as soon as it's needed.

Sorry, guys, this was a big mess. Next time we'll do it more organised.
My intention was to let the forum tool do the counting for us but, as

Indeed, Mike. And for a F-18 or a B-737, there is no "pan-pan"
situation. But I feel that if I had to land my Kitfox in a field, after
an engine problem, it would call a "pan-pan" and not "mayday." Just a

Thanks Deke. You would think by looking at these ignition units that it
would impossible to get water into them but I think it may have entered via
the wiring. Im told wiring can act like a drinking straw and literally such
water in. I dont know if this is right but it sound feasable. What ever it
is its put me out of the air again. I'll check with stratus. Clem also

As a matter of fact, it is. The aviation insurance biz is quite a bit
different than auto or home insurance.

Once a request for quote is made, the major underwriters will associate your
name and N-number, and that quote will be all you get for 12 months. You
need to really know your agent, and shop for agents to make sure they get
the right info and know what questions to ask. Once your name and n-number
are in the "system", you are locked, and it is very hard, nay impossible, to
change until that year is up.

If your agent is, well, less than the pointy end of the spear, you could
really get hosed. If he doesn't pass on all of your hours, for example, and
the underwriting agencies "mis-quote" you a high, unreasonable price, you're
toast. It will not be changed in 99% of the cases. Shopping for another
agent will do you no good.

Very important to get to know your agent, and find one you can trust. How
you do that is anybodies guess, in most cases. Word of mouth is huge in this
      business.

The way I've heard it is that once you are quoted a price for
insurance, that quote is fed out to all the insurance companies, and
they all will then "honor" that quote. In other words, you are locked
into that quote figure with all the insurers. I've heard this from
      several sources...is it true?

Its not really price fixing, it's just an archaic way of looking at the biz.
The coverage's mature, as all do, but the quoting process is bizarre, and
about 40 years in the past.

Thanks. That works. After much fumbling I had finally managed to enter
both my model number and engine type, but had never been able to find where
to list my configuration. Have now done all 3 thanks to you. You are
right. It's certainly "far from intuitive".

Thanks Rick, I'll explore my local wrecking yard if I cant get off the shelf
parts. The problem with subaru's is they just dont break down so unless one
has been totaled in a accident, you cant find one being wrecked anywhere. It
is an option Iv'e considered though. Thanks.

All the parts are off 90-99 Ford Laza, Mazda 323 or Nissan Sentra as known
here in New Zealand. I'm sure you would have similar models in the US,
perhaps diff names but the engine is in the 1500 - 2000cc range. Components
made by Mitubishi Electrics. I can send you more shots if you like, I
replaced the Sub dist base plate with a fabricated a new plate and fitted
the the trigger coils onto it. Used the std sub reluctor with a bit of
      modification. Works super well.

      Hi Jule:

Apparently you have to drink the purple koolaid and be re-born to be able to purchase
a kitfox. I asked a few days ago myself for more info.

Good luck. Neat plane, I flew one a few weeks ago.

Apparently this John Galt psycho has found a way to post here without being
subscribed. I have notified Matt Dralle of the problem and will have him
gone shortly. Please do not respond to any of his posts.

      Hi Jule:

Apparently you have to drink the purple koolaid and be re-born to be able to
purchase a kitfox. I asked a few days ago myself for more info.

Good luck. Neat plane, I flew one a few weeks ago.
