There are some exceptions. If your agent called the "Big Seven", and got quotes from all, then that's it, for the levels he asked about. I think each additional "category" of add-ons is a new quote for those. Ask your agent to be sure about that. And the point was re-iterated several times to use a good, knowledgeable, and trustworthy local agent. He mentioned AOPA as being basically a call center, and won't get better rates than anyone else. Falcon (EAA) works a little differently, but I don't remember the specifics on that. Your agent shops around for you, just as you would for car insurance. But once the $ is quoted, that's it from that company for 12 months, with no hope of changing it, at all. And there are only seven underwriters who do aviation insurance. There are some new faces coming, but not much detail there. I got my info from a briefing given by a local agent and adjuster at our EAA meeting yesterday. Most of the info was new to me, as well. It was very informative, and quite surprising. I, too, had no idea my first quote was locked in, either. Now, legally change your name and N-number, and who knows? If you use Simple Green full strength on a cloth and rub like you are spit polishing shoes takes it off. I think what is happening is we are filling our tanks too high. I think that the vent on the cap suctions some of it out. What I did was empty my tanks until they were bone dry including the header. I then put 6 gallons of gas in and put a mark on a measuring stick. I then put in 2 gallon increments until I had about 14 gallons showing on the stick (Including the header). That placed the fuel when full about 1 1/2 inches below the filler neck. I use my measuring stick religiously and a stop watch. I burn 4.5 gallons at 4800 rpm and about 5.5 gallons at 5200 rpm. When I taxi in to visit someone without re-fueling I hit the stop watch on the instrument panel. I always know exactly how much fuel I have by fuel burn and the dip stick. He called six of the underwriters, and got six separate quotes. That is about what you would do for car insurance. But the difference lies in if you were to go to another agent, and have HIM get you quotes. They would be the exact same as the first agent. That is because the underwriters reference your name and N number for the info. What's problematic is if you are a)dealing with a schmuck agent who didn't speak aviation and sent bad info, or b)the underwriters make a mistake, then you are stuck with that bad quote. Again, use a good local insurance agent.
