--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "fox5flyer" <fox5flyer@i-star.com> With all due respect to those who have voiced their input on this subject, I'd just like to add my two bits (which is all that it's worth) to this. This spring gear/tube gear thread has been off and on for as long as I can remember on this list and I seriously doubt that there will ever be a consensus as to which is better. In my opinion, having had both, it's a trade off. Currently I have the spring gear, but only because it came with the kit. The spring gear is significantly heavier. Mine, with all hardware, wheels, tires, brake calipers was almost exactly 75lbs. I've seen people go to great lengths to save just a few grams of weight on various things to keep the weight down, yet add a bunch more "pounds" and $$$$ to add the spring gear. I've never felt my S5 with spring gear was easier to handle than my old Model II with tube gear was. Both tracked straight and handled cross winds just fine. Where the big difference was (other than weight) was when I'd misjudge my full stall landing and drop it in from a few feet up. The tube gear would really bounce where the spring gear tends to just soak it up smoothly. That's about the only difference I've ever been able to note. I have the "tall" spring gear that was produced on the early S5s. The gear legs are longer and skinnier than the later models were. If you feel your Fox is squirrely then, in my opinion, you need to focus more on your gear alignment than things like tire pressure, bungies, or the type of gear you have. A little toe-in can cause a good handling airplane to be a handful. So, I guess one just considers priorities, dollars, weight, and the experiences of others to make a decision on it. Oh, there's also the factor of bungie replacement every couple years, but I never felt it was a big deal. I always made my own and the install didn't take very long. Subject: Cost and Financing Question
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "kirk hull" <kirkhull@kc.rr.com> The cost of operating any aircraft varies greatly depending on many factors but the Kitfox is a good choice for cheap flying. Here are a few general things to think about. 1. insurance for a tailwheel will be more expensive then a nosewheel (especially for a low time pilot ) 2. The smaller the airport the cheaper the rent. And usually the fuel also 3. the engine will be your biggest expense so do your research on the engine before you buy. 4. If you are not an A&P and did not build the plane you will have to pay someone to do the condition insp every year. If you are able to find a partially completer kit that you can finish, you are then the builder and can therefore do the insp ( assuming you apply for the cert). 5. The Kitfox is a very simple aircraft but if you are not sure what you are doing have a mechanic or other knowledgeable person look it over so you have know surprises. -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Don Smythe Sent: Saturday, September 23, 2006 6:47 AM Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Cost and Financing Question --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Don Smythe" <dosmythe@cox.net> Tim, For financing, I took out a home equity line of credit. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@sbcglobal.net> Deke, Your thoughts are mine exactly. I had trouble with neither as far as landing is concerned, or taxiing for that matter. The article in the Kitfox Times about gear alignment came as I was building, so that was checked and adjusted before the first flight. It is true, for me at least, that the things I read on this list often serves as motivation in considering my airplanes configuration. It was about the time I was seriously dropping it in on almost every landing that a post came in regarding a hard landing where the limit cables collapsed the bungee bulkhead resulting in a weld in replacement, new fabric etc. I am in Aerothane and the latter didn't seem fun, so I went in the direction of ridding myself of the limit cables - aluminum gear. I have friends that simply cut out the limit cables and went without them. It is hard for me to accept those little cables fastened with nicopress fittings being strong enough to collapse the bulkhead, but it did and they can. That became a motivation for me to spend the bucks and accept the weight penalty. Subject: Announcement - Westover LSA fly-in
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@sbcglobal.net> Some folks at westover, Amador County Ariport (O70) are planning a LSA Fly-in for the weekend of the 14th of October. This ariport is about 30 miles East (magnetic) of Sacramento, CA All pilots or friends that have an interest in LSA are invited to attend. My understanding is that there will be activities planned for Friday the 13th as well as the 14th. Lunch and Dinner will be available both days. There are folks on the field very interested in LSA and the infrastructure needed to get it fully functioning in the aviation world. Those interested in that part of aviation whether from the pilot's point of view or from the training, or support aspects might want to attend. A Saturday fly-out to Eagles Nest, a private residential airport with an emphasis on Warbird restoration is planned. Please pass this info onto friends that may be interersted. Contact Chris McKenze for details. (209) 267-5090 Lowell

    Subject: Announcement: Show Ane Shine
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@sbcglobal.net> The annual Show and Shine event in Cameron Park will be held on Saturday October 7th this year. This event is sponsored by the Cameron Park Soroptomists. It is open to Classic Cars, Hot Rods and Airplanes. If this year is anything like the past, there should be close to 100 Automobiles from all over Northern California and Western Nevada. These cars border on the Must See variety and the airplanes have been sort of a side show in the past. There will be lots of vendors, food and otherwise. This year the organizers are trying to make the airplanes a larger part of the event and have increased their efforts in that area. There have always been awards given airplane owners in at least three catagories. If you are planning on coming, arrive early, before 0700 and use the North taxiway (Land on Runway 31 and continue to the end and make a left when able on the taxiway that will intersect Boeing Road). There will be tons of pedestrian traffic so arriving late or leaving early won't work. Plan on leaving about 1700 when the crowd begins to thin. If you have a nice clean airplane, you will be in the running for the award. I have four and my airplane is definitely not spectacular. If you do plan on coming drop me a note, I will make my place available for a gathering spot. Questions lcfitt@sbcglobal.net Hope to see you there. Lowell

    Subject: [Off topic] Two Kitfoxes
Hello guys, I can't resist to send you a photo taken today at my airfield. The first time my Kitfox meets another one, at home. This second Kitfox is owned by a Norwegian, living in Sweden, and he had to trail his Norwegian registered plane to here (we are not too far from the Swedish border) to get his annual permit to fly. I have a Kitfox 3 with a Jabiru and he has a Kitfox 2 with a Jabiru. What's more: It turns out that his plane is the older sister of mine! How's that? Well, I knew that the original builder of my plane had built another Kitfox before. That's the one! So, for a few hours, the two "sisters" were facing each other. I am sure they had a lot to say to each other. Anyway, the wife of this Norwegian pilot is French Canadian, so I had the pleasure to speak my mother tongue today. What's more? Svein, the pilot, is a friend of our Torgeir, as he is also from Troms=F8, that place far north, where they have such a charming dialect! :-) So, Sven, who now owns a farm and his own landing stripe in Sweden, has invited me to fly there so there will be more Kitfox meeting in the future. The planes will talk together in the hangar, and I'll talk with Svein ... about Torgeir! :-) Cheers, Michel do not archive

Geez, Michel, you sure do have an interesting life! I'm sure those two Foxes had a lot to talk about, too. I didn't see Svein on the Kitfox Frappr Map. http://www.frappr.com/kitfox If he isn't there, will you please tell him about it so we can all see where he lives? Thanks! Also, for the other Kitfoxers on the list, there is a web site for the Scandinavian Kitfox owners: http://www.scandinavian-kitfoxes.se Michel, there used to be a link to the Kitfox Frappr Map, but I didn't see it this time. Please invite more members to join the map. Last count I saw was 177. Michel, keep telling the good stories and sending the excellent pictures! Mine have over 350 hours on them now and I am going to make some new ones soon. The Crimps on mine are very thick alum. What have you used for a nico style fitting? I am thinking of using a piece of 4130 and making a jig to crimp it with. . Those large alum ones are thick and clumsy to feed back through the opening on bottom when busting my knuckles after the floats come off and gear goes back on. Mine are showing some wear now . I have already in stock the 3/8s cord which is MIL SPEC stuff. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find this product in the granger catalog. A link would have been nice. The part number 4yxo4 refers to DP8005 not 8500. Is there a DP8500? I had one one of the brass reducers in the poly tank that would seep fuel. Made an aluminum washer to fit the reducer and increase the bonding area. Roughed up the areas with #40 grit paper. Installed with West epoxy with floxed cotton. Does not leak and will not be coming loose anytime soon. Hi Randy! Thanks so much - I appreciate it! I hope they've been informative, and many even fun. One more to come - the in-the-ear headsets in a couple of issues. Did you happen to catch the Used Kitfox article? I couldn't have done it without John McBean very generously sharing his knowledge, which took quite a bit of time. (Thanks again, John!) And it was delightful to meet him and Debra at OSH. Also, thanks to the many Kitfxers on this list who answered my many questions, too! best, Cory Randy Daughenbaugh wrote: >--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Randy Daughenbaugh" <rjdaugh@rapidnet.com> > >Cory Emberson.
