Right Lowell. Florin, do you not have the installation instructions that
details installing the eyebolts? If not, I've got a copy I can email...

Florin,
My IV has the two between the aft landing gear attach brackets (forfloats, I
think) and a single one forward of that. I don't believe the Model IV had
two forward brackets. I think the forward brackets attached to the floor
board similar to the radiator and shroud.

The two rear tabs are there but the front two are missing. At least they are
not visible by looking inside the scoop.

Hey John,
The forward 2 attach points are actually eyebolts that go through the
floorboards, right? There used to be only the three tabs for the rear
bracket that has 3 attach points.

Floran,
Please check the bottom of your fuselage.. there should be 4
tabs.. 2 between the lift strut mount points and 2 just forward of those...
Those 4 points are where the brackets mount. There should not be an
interference with the scoop that is installed on your aircraft.

It looks very good except the mounting brackets supplied will not work
on my speedster and I will have to make my own.

2 strokes don't have a manifold pressure gauge.
Set your prop for static rpm 6200 to 6300 on 503 and try thats.
Watch carefully your egt gauge to keep temps inline with specs
503 is a fine engine.
Throttle postion will vary with prop but it you in over half to 3/4s way
are cruise you might be over propped.
A fule flow gauge would be a good indciator as well.

Charles:
In your Rotax Operator's manual, you should have a recommended
settings table for your engine. This is a table where you have
recommended RPM for certain manifold pressures. You will need to have a
temporary manifold pressure gage so you can see where your at at the
different phases of flight, and from there you can decide what pitch you
want for your prop (climb, cruise, or in between) where the angle will
not exceed your engine parameters.
Above all, have fun,

Subject: Kitfox-List: Throttle versus RPM
Does anyone have any experience with IVO-Props on a Rotax 503? From
what I have read on the Rotax engine it should be set to about 6150 for
takeoff. What then when one reaches cruist altitude. I would be
interested in hearing how to manage the RPM verses throttle position. My
503 has no manifold guage. So what ratio of throttle position to RPM
will not overpressure the engine?
Would appreciate any input.

My IV also has just three tabs protruding through the fabric...two aft,
and one forward, which is not on the centerline...I always thought that
was curious. Having not seen the cargo pod, I don't know how this
applies.

Well, it wasn't the first x-country, just the first since I cut the
flight training/flight examiner "umbilical cord", and the first
out-of-state trip. Yes, I've got two little 6" long heat muffs that
attach to the front exhaust pipes of the Jabiru engine. They seem to
work ok for the present outside temps, but I need to seal up some air
leaks into the cabin before they will be really enough.

I don't have a cargo pod, but have thought of it from time to time. As I
understand it the pod is supported by two vertical brackets on the back
attached to the tabs and two in front attached to the floor board. The
third tab is for a triangular brace that is attached to the aft weldment for
forward-aft stability.

Subject: | 582 Idle Speed - WAS PRop Drag |
Noel,
I have a cheap analog tach for CDI ignitions purchased from ACS. I put it in
after frying the analog Kitfox tach during initial run-ups. (I neglected to install
the supplemental resistor in the tach's circuit, per the Rotax SB). I'm
sure the current tach reads 200-300 rpm too high at idle. I've checked this with
hand-held digital tach. The clutch manufacturer represents that clutch disengages
at 2400 rpm. At idle (throttle full back) my tach reads about 2700 rpm,
so in reality, it's probably turning just at the threshhold where clutch engages.
I should probably invest in a more accurate tach, but that wouldn't resolve the
puzzle of idle speed that won't go below 2400.
Noel Loveys <noelloveys@yahoo.ca> wrote:

What kind of tachometer do you have??? The electronic "Kitfox tach or one of
the newer digital tachs that have no moving parts e.g. Tiny Tach? last year
I had a lot of problems with my engine. By the end of the season (floats) I came
to the conclusion that there was a problem with my tach. The cheapest most
accurate way to tell if I was right was to install a tiny tach. The short story
is I was right.
My Kitfox tach was reading 250 rpm high per 1000rpm indicated. e.g. 2000rpm
indicated was actually 1500rpm, 6800 rpm (take off max) was actually 5100rpm..
Wonder why I had problems getting into the air and climbing with floats or
why I had to shim the hinges in my elevator. ( from idle vibration)

Noel,
I haven't been able to get my 582's idle speed below about 2400 rpms. I've adjusted
the carb slides and throttle cables, rejetted the idle jets (twice), everything
that's been suggested. It will go no lower. The only thing I've found
that will slow it down further is to apply the choke. I don't do it for very
long, not wanting to soot up my plugs, but by making the prop free-wheel, it works
very well to stop the floating.

Thanks for the info on the heat muff. You mentioned that you were going to
fit some baffles to slow the air down - have you thought about using
stranded Stainless steel (used for kitchen wash scrubbers) I used this on my
582 muffler heater muff and it worked great. It slows down the air and also
heats up itself adding more BTU's.
When you made your muff did you hinge it - if you can send me a Photo off
line that would be great.

Marco , I would get a tiny tach. They are accurate and simple to
install ( about 1 minute)
I know nothing about cluthes nor do I have any use for one. But With
the prop not engaged I think your 582 should easily idle below 2000 and
smooth as well.
I would call a Rotax guy like Bob Robertson to get his opinion and order
a tiny tach from him. They are cheap and Bob ships overnight.

I recall that pod installation instructions are available at the sportflight site
(I think). With these instructions and some pictures provided by Don Smythe
(?) I was able to fabricate brackets. The 2 front attach points are eye-bolts
through the floorboards (just inside and behind control sticks). The 3 rear eyebolts
pass through fuse tubes. If you can't find the instructions Dave, contact
me off list and I'll send what I have.

Please check the bottom of your fuselage.. there should be 4 tabs..
2 between the lift strut mount points and 2 just forward of those... Those
4 points are where the brackets mount. There should not be an interference with

Amazing! This is EXACTLY what I did with my Jabiru, last winter, Gary!
I installed a cabin heater, from the muffler, but the air was coming in
too fast and it didn't had the time to warm up. After adding a SS
kitchen scrubber at the cabin's end of the hose, it comes in slower and
warmer.
... great minds think alike! :-)

Interesting! I missed that one, Richard. I did ask the Swedes to put

I understand correctly. Because I am not there, yet I am on the

getting too complicated for me! :-)

Ooooh, that sounds like a great idea, Gary....photo(s) on the
way...Yes, I hinged it, although the hinge is more of a means of
securing the halves rather than a means of flexing the muff for
installation. What I mean is, I can't put the muff in place with the
two halves hinged together...it won't clear the obstructions. I have to
hold the one half in place, fit the other half to it (around the pipe),
then install the hinge pin, then squeeze the halves together and
install the second hinge pin.

That explains why I didn't think of it, Michel.: ) I spent a half-day
building some internal baffles, and you guys spent a
half-minute...sheeeesh! A great idea! I can't wait to try it out. I
have installed a (temporary) thermocouple lead into the outlet of each
of my heat muffs, and I can read what the air temp is coming out of the
muffs. I can experiment with different types of baffles and learn what
helps the most....guess that's what makes this "Experimental Aircraft"
experimental.
I wonder what copper scrubbers would do? (please, no plastic scrubbers)
Works for radiators...or it did when they still made them that way, and
the coefficient of heat transmission is better than anything else my
"bible" shows other than silver.

I just purchased a cargo pod from John McBean
It looks very good except the mounting brackets supplied will not work
on my speedster and I will have to make my own.

Guys -- this is what you want right here
http://update-international.com/jpg_300x300/ssp-50.html
Most stores carry them .
I use them and they are excellent. You can get 20 to 30 C temp gain in
your cockpit done properly.

Floran,
Did your pod come with two mounting brackets -- front
with two legs and rear with 3?
I've had a pod on my IV for 5 yrs now and use it
often. Some time ago I took some detail photos for
another gent that was mounting a pod but the attached
is all I could find this morning.
The front mount is simply two AN eyebolts up through
the floorboards just behind the radiator scoop. The
tripod rear mount attaches directly to the tabs on
the tubes.

Ted

Subject: | 582 Idle Speed - WAS PRop Drag |
Marco:
I would suggest the first thing to do is to get a more accurate tach.
Even
if it is only a borrowed optical tach that reads the prop speed. That
way
you at least will know what ball park you are in.
I am thinking the clutches that engage your clutch are supposed to be
set up
for 2400rpm but that may be off too. If the springs that disengage the
clutch are stretched at all than the clutch could be engaging at too low
an
engine speed. One thing I can tell you for sure that below 2000+ rpm
the
engine will run rough as it can. Shortly above 2000rpm the engine will
smooth out considerably.

Noel,
I have a cheap analog tach for CDI ignitions purchased from ACS. I put
it in
after frying the analog Kitfox tach during initial run-ups. (I neglected
to
install the supplemental resistor in the tach's circuit, per the Rotax
SB).
I'm sure the current tach reads 200-300 rpm too high at idle. I've
checked
this with hand-held digital tach. The clutch manufacturer represents
that
clutch disengages at 2400 rpm. At idle (throttle full back) my tach
reads
about 2700 rpm, so in reality, it's probably turning just at the
threshhold
where clutch engages.

Marco , I would get a tiny tach. They are accurate and simple to
install
( about 1 minute)
I know nothing about cluthes nor do I have any use for one. But With
the
prop not engaged I think your 582 should easily idle below 2000 and
smooth
as well.
I would call a Rotax guy like Bob Robertson to get his opinion and order
a
tiny tach from him. They are cheap and Bob ships overnight.

resolve
the puzzle of idle speed that won't go below 2400.

What kind of tachometer do you have??? The electronic "Kitfox tach or
one
of the newer digital tachs that have no moving parts e.g. Tiny Tach?
last
year I had a lot of problems with my engine. By the end of the season
(floats) I came to the conclusion that there was a problem with my tach.
The cheapest most accurate way to tell if I was right was to install a
tiny
tach. The short story is I was right.
My Kitfox tach was reading 250 rpm high per 1000rpm indicated. e.g.
2000rpm
indicated was actually 1500rpm, 6800 rpm (take off max) was actually
5100rpm.. Wonder why I had problems getting into the air and climbing
with
floats or why I had to shim the hinges in my elevator. ( from idle
vibration)

Noel,
I haven't been able to get my 582's idle speed below about 2400 rpms.
I've
adjusted the carb slides and throttle cables, rejetted the idle jets
(twice), everything that's been suggested. It will go no lower. The only
thing I've found that will slow it down further is to apply the choke. I
don't do it for very long, not wanting to soot up my plugs, but by
making
the prop free-wheel, it works very well to stop the floating.

If you put your scrubber in the heat muff the air will come out slower and

Not sure if it would make any difference but I read somewhere about these
scrubbers being used in aircraft fabricated heat muffs. However, it made a
point to use the ones made from Brass (on the same shelf right next to
stainless). I can't remember why they specifically called for Brass except
maybe brass is softer and less likely to wear a hole in the muffler/heat
muff or, maybe it was heat retention?????. For whatever reason, I use the
Brass ones.

All,
For some reason, everytime I mention that I have a Kitfox for sale I
always get three or four "new" people on the list that's interested in
info and pics so, here it is one more/last time. 2000 Classic IV w/582
for sale. Send request off list for info/pics. I may have to drop the
price if somebody don't get off the dime....Tell all your buddies and
your local airport.

I don't know about the stainless steel scrubbing pads you have mentioned but
have you ever seen steel wool burn? One spark will ignite it like it was
made out of gasoline. I have carried it before in a survival kit. One good
spark and you can easily start a camp fire. I have heard that it burns so
well because of an oil used in the process of making it. I would test a
piece of what ever you are using just to make sure.

For whatever reason, I use the
Brass ones.

Brian,
These scrubbing pads are no where near the thin consistency of steel
wool. I understand what you are saying but the products are completely
different.

The picture you sent look like the mounting brackets that I received from
John McBean
My scoop is different. The rear of the scoop extends back to the rear
mounting bracket on your cargo pod.
It has an adjustable door on the rear that I can adjust from inside the
cabin to control the radiator heat. Just like on a F-51.
