Frank,
Not sure you will be able to read all this small print (our picture sizes
are limited on this site) but hopefully you can. This is one version EAA's
Sport Aviation magazine provided on who did what regarding the original
design of the Avid Flyer regarding both Dan Denney and Dean Wilson. Some
say Dan was given a lot more credit than was true, but I tend to believe he
may have been the originator of the concept, with Dean being the aircraft
designer to actually make it happen. But check the history yourself, and
make your own determination.
Incidentally, I own the original Avid Flyer yet. Dan Denneys name is in the
logs as well as Dean Wilsons (Dan's was much later than Deans), so there is
no question they were both involved with this airplane. Rather than to
dispute who did what, I just consider N99AF to be the prototype for both the
Avid Flyer and the Kitfox, giving them both credit. Whatever the truth may
be, we are all fortunate these two guys did what they did, because the end
result provided all of us with one GREAT AIRPLANE! It was a trendsetter if
there ever was one. I think if one did a research project on it you would
find it to be one of the most copied aircraft designs in history, if not the
most copied.
For more information about Dean Wilson you might want to look back a few
months in Kitplanes. There was a write up about Dean in there. Not totally
accurate, but fstill a great article about Dean.

I have seen several, so called, histories of the Kitfox posted in different
places and they all seem to be pretty much the same however I wonder why no
mention is made of Dan Denny's prior relationship with the Avid Flyer Co.
(He did not just appear in Southern Idaho with a new plane) and the genesis
of the Kitfox. That Dean Wilson was the designer of the Avid which the
Kitfox was copied after. Anyone know or care to comment. (let's be nice!)

Malcolm, I have to disagree as mine is 6200 and goes to 7000 WOT
with the new prop blades from GSC, but I still got some tweaking .
winds forcast 25 to 40 knots here today so I gonna do indoor sports.
Would be agood day to do some backward flying videos :)
Agree though on adding pitch to reduce EGT temp but that being said I
set pitch for RPM then adjust needle in carb to change EGTs if
needed depending on time of season.

In michigan some people belive that adding a little pitch will lower
the egt in colder OAT. some kit foxes wil go VNE at 6800 rpm in livel
flight. if you set static rpm at 62500 like most recomend it usually
won't do 68000 full out. malcolm

I have a pretty good article from an old issue of Sportman Pilot which
can be purchased here:
http://www.sportsmanpilot.com/BI/BackIssues.htm
Vol. 12, No. 1- Spring 1992 - Tom Fletcher's Kitfox
It claims that Dan had the concept and he partnered with Dean for the
designs. They collaborated to create the Avid Flyer and soon went
separate ways. Dan then created Denney Aircraft and the Kitfox model 1.
Mention is made about an radial engine called the Pong Dragon which is
what the round cowl design was originally designed for. This engine
never made it into production as originally designed, but Denney kept
the round cowl because it looks great and was so popular.
Overall it's a pretty complete synopsis of the Avid/Kitfox story.

Didn't Denny have something to do with the Montana Coyote? , developing
or promoting it for/or with "Doc" out of Helena Montana?
I visited the production facility once while it was being set up, and
the airplane was basically a scaled up version of a kitfox.

It's a bit of a balancing act. Cold days can make the engine run lean.

Your right. The bubble doors suck :). I just made a simple pin lock for
each side. My next project was to be a a cam driven dual through to each
door side, not necessary now. I think there was a pic on the list of
one. Also SS had a set up, maybe John has one available.

BY no means do I know much about 582s, but I thought the crank was a
disposable, non-turntable item.

I have a 582 with 292 hrs and am ready to tear it down for a rebuild.
It is a grey head so I want to get the case machined for the ceramic
water pump seal update. I am looking for a place to do the machine work
(prefer the west coast for shipping reasons) and I need the crank
rebuilt. I can do the crank at the local shop, but need a source for
parts. Has anyone found a good source for rotax parts that has
reasonable prices ?
Thanks

I wanted the Avid Amphib. My shop was too short so I built a MK IV
instead. I still like the idea of the Catalina and sometimes wish I
could find an unbuilt kit. Perfect for wet Louisiana. The jigs still
existed when Avid moved to Montana. I have no idea if they still
exist. The good people at Airdale might know.

looking to find the rods and needle bearings for crank end . Correct me
someone but if I am not mistaken the 582 blue head crank is the same as the
618 crank ?.
