Hi Dwight, I thought about a Cont 65 or 85 also thought about the Lycoming 65 hp. The lack of an engine kind of stopped me as I didn't want to go thur the trouble of building one and the lack of electrical on the 65 hp engines. As for being heavy they are not as heavy as the Sub's that have been installed, but they are wider thus reqiuring major cowl rework. As for old tech. yes they are old but they run and run and run, and the VW engine tech is just as old. I went to a HKS 700E and really really like the engine installed it last winter got it flying in April 06 and as of 12/28/06 had 125.1 hrs on it. From my stand point its the best upgrade from a Rotax 582 same power slightly less takeoff roll (100') less ROC about 100' but 5 mph more cruise and best of all went from 4.5 gph to 3 gph. The HKS now has a TBO of 1000 hrs full electrical and starts and runs like a jewel. -------- GB MNFlyer Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=87515#87515

Dave, It's been way to cold here, I hope to be flying again in a couple days, I draw the line below 25 degrees, currently 3 degrees. Oh and is that how you clean the underbody. -------- kitfoxmike Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=87542#87542

Holding Air. I just put on my second set and found that there was a slight leak at the bead on one tire. After the tire softened other parts of the bead began to leak and it was almost like a blowout as it collapsed. I broke the bead on that side and cleaned again the rim and made sure there was no debris there and re-inflated. I am convinced it is not the tire, but likely just the way the bead was set after inflation. I don't know about that for sure. I had the old style taht was made from ground down 4-wheeler tires and they never leaked. I put a set of these on before the big sale due to cracks in the old resulting from an almost groundloop

That got sent before I finished. I was saying I had the old style and they never leaked. I almost ground looped and a crack came down the center of one of the old style tires due to side stress. The tires were probably dry rotted anyway as the kit set in a garage about ten years before I got it. Anyway, I put two of the new style on before the big sale and they both leak. My plane usually sits two weeks between flights due to my work and I have to add air everytime. I think it is the core. I have changed it out twice but still a small leak.

    Subject: Lesson Learned
    From: David Estapa <davestapa@juno.com>
This afternoon while working on my 5 with a 912 S I learned a Valuable LESSON. My engine has been running extremely rough. (Only has just a little over a hour on it.) I manually balanced carbs and did not help. Tried pneumatically balancing carbs and engine was running so rough I could not get the screw driver on the idle stop screws. We decided to shut down and try turning screws with engine off to see if we could get it close enough to try with engine running. When trying to restart the battery final gave up. After charging for 45 minutes we were ready to try again. My buddy in the cockpit said "why don't you pull it through a couple of times to save battery (to pull fuel into the engine). Master off, ignition switch off, and kill switches off. ( I had earlier in the day pulled the prop through about 30 blades to burp the engine). I pulled one blade when the engine caught with everything off. It probably only ran for 2-3 seconds. The second blade brushed my nuckles. Fortunately I still have all my body parts. Further investigation revealed that a wire had come out of a connector on the ignition module and one ignition system was not grounding. Fixed that, balanced carbs and now she is smooth as silk. Sorry to be so long winded, but I thought this was important. DON" EVER LET ANYONE CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU CAN'T PULL A GEARED ROTAX ENGINE FAST ENOUGH TO CREATE SPARK. From now on I will remember my training and consider the ignition live at all time when around the prop. Next time I burp it I will do so as if I'm propping a non starter airplane. Will take longer, but safer. This thing might fly real soon. David Estapa Woodstock, GA S5TD, N97DE

Subject: Re: : King fox Tires first report Hey Dave, What wheel rim and tire do you now have? ( the big one on your website) I currently have Matco 6" rims, and it looks like that is at least an 8" wheel, so I would have to change rims. How high is your axle from the ground with that set up? What axle/rim do you have? Thanks, larry

Lowell, If you cannot see the leak , immerse the whole tire in a tank or a pool ( neighbors if you not got one. ) I use dish soap around bend before installed tire and so far so good but it only 3 days and 4 hours flying. I checked my pressures today and set them at about 8 or 9 psi -- what do you others run at ? GENTRYLL I only have 4 hours on these tires and only thing I notices is it more like being on skis as they do not offer much directional stability- i.e. tracking ? Kind of like driving on black ice . That being said..... I have flown about 4 hours now on them and about 20 or 30 take offs and landings from muddy fields, water puddles on grass about 6 inches deep , laying water in muddy tilled field up to 10 inches deep and grass strips covered in freezing rain and snow . I do not find any more tendency to groudloop that with my old tires but If you not on top of your yaw control , well I suppose it could happen. And wow A Soobie at 575 pounds -- that is remarkable. How is the performance ? Must be a near record for a IV with a Suberu. Subject: Re: Weight
What makes the 1s and 2s and 3s so light is thiner spars, fewer ribs, light fabric, thinner and smaller diameter struts, simple, light engines, single fuselage fuel tank, or smaller wing tanks, minimal instrumentation, no amenities such as cabin heat, insulation, baggage storage, etc. In other words the least amount of materials were used to make a safe airplane with an enclosed cabin. If it wasn't necessary for flight and minimal comfort it isn't on the airplane. And that's why a 503 powered Model II or a B Model Avid with minimal equipment and paint can get off in under 100 feet and climb like a bat. Each succeding Model gained horsepower, comfort, and weight, lots of weight. Of course most builders seem to have to improve things, which almost always means adding weight, often lots of weight which results in some fat Model 2s and 3s. Glenn's model II weighs almost as much as my Avid MK IV STOL (547lbs). I still think the earlier Avids and Kitfoxes when built light are the most fun of the litter.
