The auction ends today for thse wheel skis. 202.53 now .
If you want Wheel skis these should be a good deal anything under 500 $
I am sure Lynn could attest to the costs plus time to make his own. by
the Lynn how is your Skis ?
If I was to make a set like this I would not sell under 500$ Most Skis
sell for $ 750 up for a Pair.
If you are considering Skis - this is a good deal for someone.

I'll file a report maybe later today as to the cost for the ones I
just built and just flew for the first time yesterday...not enough
snow here yet....I'm going in search of some today. But the initial
report is they work just fine for the 1 1/2-2" that I landed in
yesterday...7 landings at 4 different grass strips.

It was 9F yesterday at 3000' MSL, when I went out for a ski test
flight. I thought this would be the ideal day to see a "minus
something" on the OAT of my EIS, so up I went....4000'...10F.....
5000'...12F......6000'..15F....at that point I wasn't gonna see 0 or
anything close to it unless I went submarining, so I gave up on that
quest and went back to flying. : )
Today I go in search of snow....then football.

Hi Dave,Noel, and Kem, I was thinking of finding a 12 gal plus fuel tank
that would fit nicely on the passenger seat? Not sure if that would be high
enough to gravity feed the header, if not it could be pumped in I guess? Jim

Jim,
Could you replace the header tank with just a larger tank behind the
seat ?
Would be a shame to lose a pssenger seat to a fuel tank .

Lynn,
Went out for flight a while ago this AM .
OAT -13 C (9F )
Cabin temp flying 10 to 12 C ( 50 to 54 F )
So basically Heating give me approx a boost in cabin temps about 40 to 45F
increase on a overcast day and not bone chilling but still well below
freezing.
Still on Monster tires in up to 8 inch snow. < snicker>
If i seal up a few more air leaks, surely I would add a few more degrees to
the cabin.
Oh and climb today with 220 lbs of me and 13gals gas was 1300 FPM at worst
in a 582 . :)
Cruise speed at 500 agl seems to be about 86 -87 area at 6000 RPM
WOT i showed 101 MPH average.

I put a aluminum 9 gal. aux. tank in my Avid. It was purchased at an
off-road supply store for $99, and was light weight. It also had the fill
cap and pipe fittings already welded in. It is built to take rough off
roading and installed easily by attaching it to the tubing already a part of
the fuselage.
It is cyndrical in shape and supprisingly small (for holding nine ga.).

My EIS yesterday showed 61 F for the "unit" temp. I think that is
close to what the cabin temp is, at least behind the panel. I was
wearing a bulky down coat at first, but changed it for a simple vest-
type coat later on...more for the ability to move rather than
anything else. Besides, the sun was out and that got the cabin temp
up a bit. I'll take a thermometer along today and see what it is at
foot level and at other levels within the cabin. I've got to call FSS
and see if they know of any snow levels around lower Lower Michigan.
Richard Rabbers reported pretty much no-snow around Benton Harbor
area, and suggested heading north. I would think that lake effects
snow should be somewhere along Lake Michigan.

Subject: | Ski-building story |
Here's the ski-building story, from my perspective:
I didn't have a tubing notcher, and the cheap one that our EAA
chapter has, had been used without lubing the main shaft, so I drove
about 360 miles roundtrip to buy a heavy duty one, and a tubing
bender. When I got home, my Spruce order of 4130 was there. I had
been battling the flu, so wasn't in the greatest shape to begin
bending right away, so the first practice bend came 6 days later.
Then came building a jig, and that took 3 days. I had to build a
symmetrical jig to build asymmetrical skis, a right and a left, so
that took a little thinking, namely a full scale drawing to help
visualize the thing. My first thought about the jig would have had me
cutting the jig apart to get the first ski out...no wonder these damn
engineers get paid so much money: )
I got the parts all cut, bent, notched, angled, and welded up, and
primered in the next 4 days, then came rigging the cables. I did as
much nicopressing as I could at home in a heated shop before I had to
go and break ice off the hangar door and set up the plane for the
finish rigging. That took the better part of 2 days....getting the
tail up on a stand, alone, for the 5 degree-down setting was a chore
with only 5 gallons in each tank...don't try this with full tanks.
That done, the front cables and shock cords came next. There were
too many angles involved (for me) to simply use trig to figure the
maximum length for the front cables to allow 20-35 (I settled on 25)
down deflection angle. I could do the math for the "flat" angle, but
the skis being 20 inches out from the fuselage meant involving a
secondary angle, and my solid geometry skills got left behind in
college (about the time I left engineering studies for photographic
studies), so I did a simple mockup at home, in the warm, and came up
with the proper length cables. Got the hardware all installed and
took it out for some taxi tests in the 1 1/2-2 inch snow on my
runway. Lotsa strange noises emitted from the combination of frozen
ground, wheel-penetration skis with little tail wheels at the back
end of each ski rolling over frozen mole runs, etc., and the fact
that I hadn't been in the plane for 26 days, all added up to a breath-
holding 20 minutes of thrashing around on the runway....(these noises
diminished when I turned the ANR's on : ) ) I was learning to lift
the tail with power and forward stick, and that was kinda scary at
first, then I got used to doing it and getting the tail turned around
in good shape. I could have and was, turning using only the tail
wheel (no ski back there...yet, or maybe ever) but wanted to learn
turning using the rudder only and stick and power. All went well, so
I did my usual turn in front of the hangar, then decided to go out
again, powered up and went back out...the sky was too full of snow
for actually flying it, so I did some more "weld-breaking tests" then
decided to put it away. All looked good after post-taxi inspection,
so I hangered it. At first I couldn't understand how all the snow got
in the hangar....then I though about that "going back out" again
move...yup, I gotta learn to close the hangar doors before that
maneuver next time.
I made 7 landings at 4 airstrips the next day, all on about 2 inches
or less of snow, so mostly the wheels were doing all the support of
the plane, so the skis themselves were not tested yet...maybe today
if I can locate some snow.
The cost of the materials came to about $439 USD (tubing and plastic=
$284, hardware=$155) the tools that I bought (that I either needed or
WANTED) came to $537, and jigging was a mere $20 or less. My flight
instructor assured me that I would want to double up on the front
cables and shock cords, so that'll add a little more hardware.

I had that happen on my IV. The symptom I had was covering most of
the length of the runway at 20 feet with the throttle at idle. She
just wouldn't slow down! Ultimately I pushed it onto the ground
(which wasn't very graceful). If I had been thinking, I'd have just
shut off the ignition... :-)
I was never happy with the original cables I used so I ended up
replacing them with something more sturdy and didn't have any more
trouble.

Oh no, not the dreaded pot scrubbers again! Actually, I had taken
about 2/3's of the PS's out of the heat muffs....I figured I must
have stuffed 'em too full, as I wasn't getting the air flow that I
thought I should be getting. Along with stuffing them too full, I
also had originally installed some rigid aluminum baffles inside the
heat muffs, and I removed those as well. Taking some out seemed to
help, but the air flow is still pretty low. I might have too many
180's in my scat hoses. : )
Now remember that the 61 F was only the unit temp of the EIS, and
that may be elevated by the heat of the electronics inside the EIS
box. Somebody else that knows electronics, specifically this unit,
might be able to answer that one.

Snowing like crazy today up here in Osceola County, Lynn. I did some x-c skiing
yesterday and there was a base of 6-8". With today's snow, I think your skis
would put you down most anywhere.

chapter has, had been used without lubing the main shaft, so I drove
about 360 miles roundtrip to buy a heavy duty one, and a tubing
bender. When I got home, my Spruce order of 4130 was there. I had
been battling the flu, so wasn't in the greatest shape to begin
bending right away, so the first practice bend came 6 days later.
Then came building a jig, and that took 3 days. I had to build a
symmetrical jig to build asymmetrical skis, a right and a left, so
that took a little thinking, namely a full scale drawing to help
visualize the thing. My first thought about the jig would have had me
cutting the jig apart to get the first ski out...no wonder these damn
engineers get paid so much money: )
I got the parts all cut, bent, notched, angled, and welded up, and
primered in the next 4 days, then came rigging the cables. I did as
much nicopressing as I could at home in a heated shop before I had to
go and break ice off the hangar door and set up the plane for the
finish rigging. That took the better part of 2 days....getting the
tail up on a stand, alone, for the 5 degree-down setting was a chore
with only 5 gallons in each tank...don't try this with full tanks.
That done, the front cables and shock cords came next. There were
too many angles involved (for me) to simply use trig to figure the
maximum length for the front cables to allow 20-35 (I settled on 25)
down deflection angle. I could do the math for the "flat" angle, but
the skis being 20 inches out from the fuselage meant involving a
secondary angle, and my solid geometry skills got left behind in
college (about the time I left engineering studies for photographic
studies), so I did a simple mockup at home, in the warm, and came up
with the proper length cables. Got the hardware all installed and
took it out for some taxi tests in the 1 1/2-2 inch snow on my
runway. Lotsa strange noises emitted from the combination of frozen
ground, wheel-penetration skis with little tail wheels at the back
end of each ski rolling over frozen mole runs, etc., and the fact
that I hadn't been in the plane for 26 days, all added up to a breath-
holding 20 minutes of thrashing around on the runway....(these noises
diminished when I turned the ANR's on : ) ) I was learning to lift
the tail with power and forward stick, and that was kinda scary at
first, then I got used to doing it and getting the tail turned around
in good shape. I could have and was, turning using only the tail
wheel (no ski back there...yet, or maybe ever) but wanted to learn
turning using the rudder only and stick and power. All went well, so
I did my usual turn in front of the hangar, then decided to go out
again, powered up and went back out...the sky was too full of snow
for actually flying it, so I did some more "weld-breaking tests" then
decided to put it away. All looked good after post-taxi inspection,
so I hangered it. At first I couldn't understand how all the snow got
in the hangar....then I though about that "going back out" again
move...yup, I gotta learn to close the hangar doors before that
maneuver next time.
I made 7 landings at 4 airstrips the next day, all on about 2 inches
or less of snow, so mostly the wheels were doing all the support of
the plane, so the skis themselves were not tested yet...maybe today
if I can locate some snow.
The cost of the materials came to about $439 USD (tubing and plastic=
$284, hardware=$155) the tools that I bought (that I either needed or
WANTED) came to $537, and jigging was a mere $20 or less. My flight
instructor assured me that I would want to double up on the front
cables and shock cords, so that'll add a little more hardware.

God, those look VERY similar to what I just built...and they are less
than 200 miles from me, up near Grand Rapids. Somebody better jump on
those for the price that is showing now. I have never done any Ebay
purchasing, but maybe I'd better learn....that is SUCH a good deal

The last 3 or 4 times that I've tried to climb to lower temps, I have
run into a temp inversion...really strange to me. Is this normal? I
know about the 3 degrees F loss for each 1000' altitude, but lately I
haven't seen it...yesterday it was about the opposite.

I was going to ask you about that possibility, Marco, but I wouldn't
have got an answer back in time to go anyplace today. I called
Lansing FSS, and they advised against going anywhere today, as snow
was coming in. Right now it's just a sleet-like snow coming down,
with VERY slow accumulation. Got any possible good strips up around
you that are turf, marked well, and not all criss-crossed with
snowmobiles?

Not a bad idea, but the lawyer cost would be prohibitive, I'm sure.
The problem with mine is that they are designed around my 16x7.50x 8
tires. The ones on eBay right now are for taller tires, and narrower.
I could adjust a few things in the jig I suppose...hmmm...still that
liability thing, though.
One more thing about gathering the materials for the skis...not
knowing what would work best, I ordered 1/4" and 5/16" shock cord,
already having some 3/8" on hand from my pre-Grove gear days. To my
dismay, I found that the 1/4" was stronger than the 5/16". I ended up
using the 3/8" cord and Spruce's end fasteners.
Oh yeah, mine weigh about 13 pounds each and have 1/4" thick UHMW
polyethylene bottoms/shoes...so far no snow sticks to them, and very
little piles up on top of the part behind the wheel. That may be due
to having not much snow to test them on.

Unless your EIS was installed in the Merrimac I doubt it would generate
enough heat to be noticed. At one time the used to have small heat stoves
in electronic circuits to keep frequency crystals consistent. Even those
have all but gone.
I is more probable that the display light will give off more heat than the
EIS box. The new wide screen plasma television screens give off lots of
heat.

It is extremely common in my country, Lynn. During the winter, if
there isn't much convective wind, like under a high pressure, the cold
air runs down the mountains and stays in the valleys where, usually,
the airfields are. Climb up, and you'll meet warmer air.
In places like Greenland, it also causes strong winds called katabatic
winds. In Norway, it mostly creates freezing fog in the valleys. I once
observed such a fog flowing down a fjord, like a big stream. It was
very impressive and moved relatively fast.
Noel, yes freezing rain would be a sign of an inversion, i.e. warmer
air above colder air. But this kind is mostly met when a cold front is
passing.

Thanks for the report and good luck with your ski flying, Lynn. My
experience is that the wheel penetrating skis with the little wheels
behind, makes it easier to prevent a ground loop as it provides a
better directional control.
So, watch it when the snow is gone and you have removed the skis! :-)

Hey guys thanks for the input on the fiberglass tanks,I've decided I'll
buy new tanks from John at Kitfox.I did talk to one more kitfox owner
off the list who has the Skystar 13 gal factory Kreem coated tanks and
after more then eight years with auto fuel no problems.Now for you auto
fuel burners like me I did the EAA glass jar watermark test today and
what a surprise.In 1998 I did this test and the winners
were.Amoco,Marathon,Mobile,Union 76.The worse was Sonoco.Today here in
Carleton,Mi I tested Mobile,Marathon,BP,Shell,Speedway,Citco.Only Mobile
remained clear fuel and clear water with no rise in the water mark hands
down my choice for fuel.Shell comes in my next choice,clear fuel but
cloudy water no rise,my old favorite Marathon fuel turned cloudy,the
water turned cloudy no rise in water.Speedway not so good,cloudy fuel,
very cloudy water.BP didn't do so well,cloudy fuel and water and the
water mark rose very slightly.The fuel from south America was bad,Citco
fuel was cloudy,the water was very cloudy,and the water mark rose

Don,
I checked with our local fuel suppliers here a few weeks ago and they
told me that Sunoco in Ontario is the only one that has ethanol gas. I
don't buy Sunoco anyhow, but If I needed gas I would.
I have yet to see it marked on any pump either .....YET.
Regardless of the fear - who has actually had a problem from ethanol
gas. ? I have heard of it but not seen peronally.
So I can say that on 2006 alone I used over 1200 US gals of gas in My
kitfox and tanks not leak yet. Although I might be eating those words
though anyday.
I am not a supporter of ethanol but I am a supporter in buying gas. I
will not limit my self to only buying one kind of gas because of
speculation. If you fly anywhere and need gas ,especially on floats
then you must learn to adapt or not fly anymore.
If and when my tanks fail, then I will replace them with what ever I
need.
Everyone can talk and test but how many Kitfoxes have had a issue with
this so far ?

I have a used Rotax 582 and Kitfox Classic IV Firewall Forward Kit for sale, for
$3000. This includes:
- Rotax 582 grey-head with about 510 hours
- Firewall Forward Kit for Kitfox Classic IV
- GSC 3-bladed ground-adjustable wood prop
- Grand Rapids technology EIS, with altimeter option, and all probes
- Misc carb jets and other odds-n-ends
I purchased the engine used in 1998 with approximately 400 hours on it. It had
never been overhauled. I stored the engine until 2003, when it was overhauled,
and updates applied, by Lockwood. I installed it in my Kitfox IV and flew it
for about a year and half, for another 110 hours. I took it out of service about
one year ago and replaced it with a 912S. I was considering keeping the engine
for another project, but have now decided to sell it.
The engine is in need of service. Approximately 10 hours before replacing the
engine it began running rough and lost about 10% of its max power. I believe
the engine experienced a cold seizure and may require overhaul (or attention from
someone more adept at 2-stroke engine maintenance than I am).
The firewall forward kit includes all major components: firewall, cowl, engine
mount, exhaust, cooling system, etc.
I prefer to sell all components together, but I'll sell them separately if I
don't get any takers on the whole package.

Probably not what you're looking for but Cain Field (38C) just off US-131, South
of Big Rapids is turf. Maybe they plow it, maybe not. Then there are the neaby
inland lakes, e.g. Canadian, Chippewa and alot of others big enough for a Fox
on skis. Ice should be plenty thick with the cold weather of late and covered
by a foot or more of fresh snow. Look out for the ice shanties.

Can't you deal with the product liability issue same way the kitplane industry
does? Sell it unassembled, as a kit. You weld and prime, purchaser does the remaining
"51%". As for the lawyer stuff, I could help you there, maybe in exchange

The problem with mine is that they are designed around my 16x7.50x 8
tires. The ones on eBay right now are for taller tires, and narrower.
I could adjust a few things in the jig I suppose...hmmm...still that

knowing what would work best, I ordered 1/4" and 5/16" shock cord,
already having some 3/8" on hand from my pre-Grove gear days. To my
dismay, I found that the 1/4" was stronger than the 5/16". I ended up
using the 3/8" cord and Spruce's end fasteners.
Oh yeah, mine weigh about 13 pounds each and have 1/4" thick UHMW
polyethylene bottoms/shoes...so far no snow sticks to them, and very
little piles up on top of the part behind the wheel. That may be due
to having not much snow to test them on.

Will you be able to do that without cutting fabric? I have 2x 6 gal wing tanks
and 1 gal behind the seat header. Would sure like another 5-6 gal near the CG
without cutting fabric.
