Since it was lost in the fuel system discussion and you wanted this to be kept, I'll copy it here. Thanks for the kind words. Bob In Cessnas, Kitfoxes, and the like, your head, the CG, and the CL are all within a few inches. Basically, the airplane maneuvers about this small sphere that your head is in and yaw is not as pronounced. In the Glasair, Lancair, and some of the other pocket rockets, the pilot's inner ear is actually pretty far aft of this; naturally the pilot can better feel yaw. As an interesting aside, yaw dampers in airliners typically only have max rudder authority of a few degrees, but turn them off and people in the ends of the cabin can get sick or have trouble standing. The Kitfox was designed to be a light airplane and here comes the tie-in to altering an airplane's design. We all like to have "stuff" that adds weight. If we put that weight in the center of the airplane, it diminishes our useful load. However, as we add say a heavier engine in the front and ballast in the tail, bigger tailwheel, aft batteries, etc, we don't just diminish the useful load, we diminish the inertial stability of the design that the flight controls are sized to manipulate. Handling a cross-wind gust at low speed can come closer to the limits of rudder control, ground-loops become easier, and spin recovery takes more effort. Keeping your airplane light will help keep the inertia, and controllability, as it was designed to be. Bob Aero Eng, A&P -------- Remember that internet advice may only be worth what you pay. Hi Mark (and others) - I haven't really introduced myself to the group. I work in DC as an Aircraft Systems Engineer, although my position description says "Aero." I also try to keep my A&P active on the side. I haven't outright built anything since a glider in the late 1970s, but have bought and sold "clean-up" project planes. Tired of blowing 8+ gph of avgas in the last one, a 100 mph Beech Sport, I recently bought a time capsule of a hardly-started 1992 Vixen kit with quick-build wings. One of the few things that has been started on this kit is to convert the gear so it can be a taildragger, using a Grove spring. The structure is much like later models from the factory that can go nose or tailwheel. I've been searching the archives here and on the predecessor Yahoo group for what others have done and had problems with and really appreciate the history. I intend to finish the gear mod and expand the cargo compartment, but want to get it done and keep it light so otherwise plan few mods, probably powering with a 100-hp 912S or 120-hp 3300. I live close enough to DC that I'll need a transponder and comm radio. I enjoy reading of you guys who are actively flying and if you are close enough for a ride I'd love to pay the gas. Bob BTW to Mark. As I understand, you have an 80-hp engine and are doing close to 90 mph (80 kts). Others probably can tell better and checking the real speed with a GPS is a good idea, but on 80hp you're probably close to what the airplane should do, especially if the tires are unfaired. -------- Remember that internet advice may only be worth what you pay. From: "helicop" <garymail@bellsouth.net>
I am new to the list and recently really became interested in the Kitfox. I had not even seen one until this past weekend when Don Smythe had made arrangements for me to see Ronnie Lindsey's 5 and Warren Miller's 4. Being a big guy (6-2 250) I soon realized that the 5 was more comfortable for my size. As Don, Ronnie, and Warren can attest, I have alot of questions. Right now I am trying to figure out if a Series 5 will fit inside of an enclosed trailer. Do any of you have any experience with this, or know anyone that has. I am not sure about the width or height, but I am sure you would probably need a 8.5 foot wide trailer. If you have any information, I would really appreciate it. Also, I would like to thank all the members of the group for sharing their information and experience. Alot of you go to great length to answer a question, and although I may not have any clue of what you are talking about, I appreciate the effort. I admire those of you that built your Kitfox, because it would take me 15 years to get it out of the box. I would much rather enjoy the flying. Thanks again, Gary Goss Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=92946#92946

my 912 engine began running roughly a few weeks ago and I attibuted it to cold weather. adjustments to mixture did not alter the rough running. in checking the plugs those in the front two cylinders were wet, sooty black and the those from the rear cylinders were toasty brown. (Pictures available upon request). any suggestions about the possible cause of the obvious uneven burning of the fuel/air mixture between the front and rear cylinders? LeRoy, Thanks for introducing yourself. This might be a good time for a reminder. I have a spreadsheet with all the airplanes that list members have reported to the list. I enjoy referring to it from time to time and think it might be time for an update. I will post the spreadsheet as an attachment for those who have not seen it. I would also be interested in adding to the spreadsheet anyone who is building or just interested. As far as I am concerned anyone who has in interest in the Kitfox is well within the bounds of the fraternity. I can add catagories as need arises. John, Your rear plugs will burn from a brown to gray. Your front plugs will burn jet black. Stand back and look at your manifold. The long straight unobstructed distance gives you that look to the front cyclinders. The rear gets a 90 degree bend to the rear cyclinder. The color of the plugs is normal. Jeff Classic IV 912UL ----- Original Message ----- From: kerrjohna@comcast.net To: Kitfox Sent: Monday, February 05, 2007 12:15 PM Subject: Kitfox-List: rough running 912ul my 912 engine began running roughly a few weeks ago and I attibuted it to cold weather. adjustments to mixture did not alter the rough running. in checking the plugs those in the front two cylinders were wet, sooty black and the those from the rear cylinders were toasty brown. (Pictures available upon request). any suggestions about the possible cause of the obvious uneven burning of the fuel/air mixture between the front and rear cylinders? John Kerr

Leroy Have you had the opportunity yet to assemble any performance figures for the plane. Cruise speed, rate of climb, fuel burn, take off distance etc. I'd be interested to hear about the Revmaster in a Kitfox. Hi Leroy. I almost missed your post as I have been buried with work and only reading certain topics. I hope you post a new subject with your performance specs when you know them. I have a new Revmaster in the garage and wonder what it is capable of. Lowell I'm unable to open the file. How about some help as to what program to use. Is there a trick to get it open? Thought I had this #@%^ computer figured out.
