While on the subject of spinners ... I have a Jabiru engine with a Jabiru prop
and a Jabiru spinner; glassfiber with six screws. It works fine but when I see
it with the engine at idle, I can see it wobbling. So, I try to get it in-line
with the help of a reference stick, a pencil line, marking the "offending" side,
loosening the screws (the holes in the glassfiber are a little bit greater
for that purpose) moving slightly the spinner, then screw again.
But I never manage to get it perfect, it always wobbles a bit, however I work on
it. I remove the spinner about 4 times per year, to check the prop bolts torquing.

Do your spinner spin perfectly smooth or do you also have a slight wobble? Thanks.

      While I am at it:
A big cheer for the departing list moderators and another one for the new ones!

      Cheers,

      Hola Michel:

When I had the 582, my spinner also had a slight wobble. That never was a problem!

Powder coat rusting??? Not unless it has contaminates in it or is
coming up from underneath it or migrated from some other area. This has
to be checked soon. See if it will clean off and then check for pin
holes where it is coming up through. I have used a product called Rust
Fix. It does a chemical thing with the rust and turns black, works good
on my truck rebuild. Probably not good with structural parts. With the
info you have given that is all I have.

Personally I have never used any type of loctite on my spinner bolt, and
it has never been a problem. My prop is also a left-turning one. If
you feel that you must use loctite, then use the blue rather than the
red. Once it's set up the red can be loosened only by heating it, and I
don't think you want to put a torch to your spinner.

I am pretty sure UHS calls for blue locktite on the spinnersi have
      installed.

Don't have the sheet in front of me though.

They do make a class spinner and are locally near me .

That being said , I have not used loctite on some other spinners and
      never had an issue.

I have a 10" UHS fiberglass spinner. The tip runs true, but the
trailing edge wobbles all over. I don't think the mounting flange was
      tooled very well.

Larry, this is one some of the most well written data that I've seen yet
regarding VGs and is exactly what I've been waiting to see before I make
the move to installing some on my S5. One thing, you stated you had a
ten mph increase in cruise with just the VGs on the HZ. What happened
when you installed them on the wings? How, if any, did it affect your
      cruise airspeed?
Great report and one that I'm definitely keeping.

This is a report of my findings using CCI VG's on the Avid Flyer STOL
      wing aircraft.

        Background:

The aircraft is an Avid Flyer TD STOL wing with a Rotax 582, 3:1
gearbox, Culver 74x48 prop. Built according to the kit/plans with no
modifications except for "Grove" landing gear. (heavier) Published
allowable center of gravity is 11.185 to 16.5. This aircraft was at
13.5". Designed stall speed at approximately 900lbs in flight weight is

A powder coat works to prevent rusting by providing a barrier to Oxygen
. It otherwise has no antirust capabilities such as is provided by
chromate epoxy paints. If powder coat is applied over rust, or is too
thin, or incomplete, or the barrier is broken rust will progress quite
happily beneath the powder coat. The only thing you can do is remove
the powder coat, remove the rust, apply a phosphate conversion coating
to take care of any residual corrosion in pits, and paint with a
      corrosion inhibiting paint.

      Deke,

The cruise speed remained +10 with the vgs on the wing. I usually
cruise (stol wing - no where to go) at 5400 rpm (582/3:1 box) and I
always had a comfortable 74 ias. Now, I can hold 74 with only 4900-5000
rpm. Setting 5400 puts it at 85 ias, but with the stol wing, the drag
is already starting to build at this speed. The gain in speed comes
from the tail now doing its job, and allowing the wing to do its.

      acquire this project.

If this is the spinner that has a single bolt on the front, I would say yes indeedy
you need locktite on the bolt. I have that type on the IVO prop that I just
put on and the instructions say locktite and torque to 35inch pounds, right,
no way, I went to 100 inch and used red locktite. Oh and if you haven't had
a spinner come off, wait until one does come off, I personally have had this
happen, thought it was a bird and until I landed and found the spinner gone and
two blades wiped. Locktite and torque and check regularly. After all anything
that is bolted on the airplane needs to be installed as best as can be.
After all you are up in air not on the ground traveling along.

      Deke and Don,

All too often it is the "behind the scenes" people that do the most work
and receive the least thanks. So, from me, thank you both. I hope you both will

continue to contribute to the list, as it has become (imho) the "go to"
place for all questions Kitfox. And then some.:-) It is nice to know that no
matter what one comes across, from a mod.1 to a mod.7, someone on the list has

the answer. You can be proud of what you have accomplished here. Admittedly, I

receive far more from the list than I contribute, but that's because I'm
still wet behind the ears with my Kitfox. I wish you both the best of luck and

      future success.
      Best Regards,

Hum, thinking of it, my mounting flange is also glassfiber and maybe it

      Michel,
Just a thought here. Have you tried this. Remove the spinner and place it
big end down on a flat surface, then lay a pencil on the surface( you may have

to block up the pencil to the location of the holes) and then simply slide
the pencil on the surface as you draw a line around the spinner. That should
give you an accurate "reference" line for the screws. Providing of course the

spinner is symmetrical in relation to it's base,or big end.
      Regards,
      Greg G.

      Michel and others-
I mounted my mounting flange in the lathe and made a fine cut on the
flange so as to minimize the runout. I couldn't take much off, as the
      fiberglass is thin.

      Deke,

The cruise speed remained +10 with the vgs on the wing. I usually cruise
(stol wing - no where to go) at 5400 rpm (582/3:1 box) and I always had a
comfortable 74 ias. Now, I can hold 74 with only 4900-5000 rpm. Setting
5400 puts it at 85 ias, but with the stol wing, the drag is already starting
to build at this speed. The gain in speed comes from the tail now doing its
job, and allowing the wing to do its.

| Subject: | Kitfox powder coat surface rusting?? |

Well stated Jerry. The only thing I would like to add is rusting usually
requires an electrolyte like water or even water vapour. Ferrous metals
kept in a really dry location (say Nevada) won't rust without the aid of a
humidifier in the hangar. With any miniscule amount of moisture in the air
and microscopic cracks in the powder coat filiform corrosion will creep
under the "good" coating. The sooner corrective action is taken the better.

Subject: Kitfox-List: Kitfox List Admin Retirement

For those of you out there who aren't aware of it, Don Pearsall and I
      have
been the co-administrators for the kitfox for a lot of years. After
      long
period of discussions between Don and I, I'm posting this message to
announce my retirement from the duties of Kitfox List Administration.
      Many
years ago Don and I simultaneously assumed the management of the list.
Previous to that Don hosted it and Jim Crowder was the moderator. It
      even
goes much farther back than that, but that's another story. It's been a
very rewarding job that has led us through several challenges, including
      the
complete loss of list functions due to server problems, changes to
      hosting
entities, and finally to where we made the decision to move to Matt
      Dralle's
Matronics where things have been more automated and very stable. It was
      a
lot of work making the changes, but the result was worth the effort.

It was a couple of years ago that Don and I started talking about
      retiring.
Don sold his project a few years ago and he no longer has a Kitfox and
      has
been spending his time, money, and effort as list admin out of the
      kindness
of his heart. I'm still flying my Kitfox and have no immediate
      intention of
changing that, but I've been doing this for a very long time and we've
      both
decided that the time has come for us to gracefully bow out and leave
      the
administrative functions to some new blood.

Shortly you'll be receiving an introduction letter from long-time list
members Guy Buchanan and Michael Gibbs as new list administrators.
      They're
both very capable guys and I have no doubt that they'll do an effective
      and
fair job in the management process. I have no doubt that you will all
      give
them the full support that you've given to Don and I.
      Best Regards,

      Deke Morisse

I am keeping a copy of your report too Larry. Great
job! You got the kind of gains VG's should provide,
though it seems most were gained from your tail
      installation.

I think VG's can provide a significant drag reduction
on a lot of planes, homebuilts and store bought, if we
just experimented more with them. Looking at a
friend's Aztec made me think those engine cowls have
to be draggy and could use VG's to gain some speed.

I might try some on my lower cowling to enhance
      cooling too.

These little devices can have a lot of beneficial
      applications.

      Thanks for the report,

      I figured as much Clem,

But it was an opportunity to write you again, if just
      to bug you, ha ha.

My computer is screwing up lately too. One of my
cleanup programs seems to be attacking my word
processor and a few other things it thinks are bad. I
am trying to not to lose documents over it, but have
no time to fix it right now.

My cousin and her hubby just left after being here for
4 days. I needed the entertainment break, but now I
am behind and have to catch up again. The good news
is the house got cleaned and better organized. The
bad news is I slept on the couch because the rest of
the house isn't furnished yet. One day... I mean,
      aaaa "I have a dream..."

Well, back to catching up some more. I am no where
near working on my plane yet. Poor thing. And my
flying skills are not getting excercise either. :-(

      Hi Mark,

What weight, temperature, and altitude were you
      testing at?

It will be interesting to see your GPS results to
confirm speeds. I think you are probably right on the
static error, but GPS testing of the ASI will be more
accurate. The higher stall seems close to mine, but
again weights need to be close.

Wait a sec! If that's a Aluminum spinner you don't want to use a lead
