Barry: What is your reduction ratio? Noel -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Barry West Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 10:29 AM Subject: Kitfox-List: Recovering from lost propeller blades This is taking a lot more time than I thought. You may remember that in January I posted emails that all three of my propeller blades departed my Kitfox IV Classic with a 912S while in flight. I needed to replace the propeller, the engine mount and do some repair to the cowling. I ordered an IVO prop and it came some time ago. John shipped the new engine mount last week and the repairs are done. What I don't have is the drive lugs needed to attach the propeller. These are the female threaded lugs that press into the flange on the drive shaft. Neither Kitfox Aircraft nor Lockwood have been able to get them from Rotax. I wonder if any of you have some you don't need and would sell them (six) to me. Let me know at barry@pgtc.com. Barry West

Makes sense! Thanks Jerry. Graphite and aluminum in the presence of water form an electrolytic cell. The corrosion produced is the same type as is encountered with aluminum and iron, or iron and zinc, Galvanic with aluminum the looser. When the first carbon fiber bicycles became available the carbon tubes were frequently bonded in aluminum brackets where the tubes clustered at the bottom bracket, head set and rear wheel brackets. There were numerous, occassionally spectacular failures of these bikes due to galvanic corrosion. Jerry Liles Randy Daughenbaugh wrote: > Thanks Rick and Kurt. > > Something is going on. You guys are great, I received 11 responses so far. I want to respond to couple of these here. Noel wanted to know my gearbox ratio. It is 2.43 : 1. Some of you did not pick up the original email. Rather than me digging that out you can go to our chapter web site and find the latest newsletter. I wrote an article describing the event and it is in that newsletter. The web site is www.eaa732.org. There was damage to the engine mount and John shipped me a new one last week but there is a lot to do before I need those lugs and I will answer some of you individually. Barry

The IVO is a great prop. It had some problems early on, not serious as I have owned several. Sold the ground adjustable 68 inch that was on my 912UL. Also used it for about 100 hours on 912ULS. Worked fine except on some run ups the tips would stall but not in flight. Just a slight cavitation sound. I bought it (ground adjustable) as IVO was having some problems with lead screw and I had one that was broken. Seems that they had some metal problems and they were on back order so I ordered the ground adjustable unit and used it for my 40 hours of flight test. I have a 72 inch now and it matches the plane very nicely. The worse thing that could happen would be a complete motor failure, at which time you would fly with your last pitch setting. It will get you home very nicely or you can remove the prop. About 5 minutes and manually set for netural position. The plane will fly with any pitch setting. I would recomment the 68 inch prop for the 912UL and the 72 inch for the 912ULS. My origional prop was a 70 inch which I cut down. Call me or contact me off line for more information. One of the contact rings drifted on the insulated shaft so it wasn't under the brush. If you guys notice that the ASI will fluctuate a bit in a slip. For steadier performance of the ASI put a static port on both sides of the plane, connect them together and "T" in the ASI, ALT and VSI. Noel That is something I would like to do after my test flights. I wish Kitfox would have made this part of the building instructions. It will be l lot harder now to install the second static port. Mark Wisconsin Kitfox 5 912 UL DO NOT ARCHIVE ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

What I was concerned with is if the reduction came out to an even number it is possible for the power pulses occurring at the same place every revolution of the prop. I have picked up that could have a bad effect of some props. Most of those props are not recommended for direct drive applications as direct drive applications have the power pulses in the exact same place on every other revolution ( four stroke ). So, Clint, tell me why you think the 68" is a better IVO prop for the 912 UL engine, currently I have mine at 70", but I feel that is too much prop and am thinking of shortening to 68". -------- kitfoxmike model IV, 1200 speedster 912ul Do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=107587#107587

I had a 70 to start. It worked ok but even the 68 inch in my opinion pitched a little high. I would try it first before doing anything. My advise is don't over work the unit. I use manifold pressure gauge along with tachometer. At sea level I would like to see between 22 to 23 inches. If it is a lot higher then that, your RPM's will be on the low side. Hi Michel- I've had that lathe since about 1963, I think, and it has traveled from Michigan to California (about 2300 miles) in a car, and traveled back from there in a trailer. I once loaned it to a guy here in Michigan, while I moved to California. He enjoyed the use of it for about 2 years, until I got settled into a house with a garage where I could use it again, and he delivered it to me out there, while he made a trip to California. I then left California to move back here to Michigan, and had to leave it out there, only to return to California a few years later, to bring it home in a trailer....WHEW! But I digress... The amount of out-of-round that I had was partly due to the bulkhead, as they call the mounting plate, and partly due to the irregular surface of the inside of the spinner itself. I didn't do anything to the inside of the spinner. Correcting that would have taken somebody with a lot more smarts than what I have just to be able to figure a way to hold the slippery, angled thing in the first place! Perhaps a vacuum device could be built that would hold the spinner so that it could be turned true inside. Yes, I did invent the wheel...it had four sides... Better get in out of the sun, Michel. : ) Lynn do not archive On Apr 16, 2007, at 4:01 PM, Michel Verheughe wrote: > > Thanks guys and sorry for a bit late answer.
