I coat the ball joints with the high temp silicone sealant that is used on the
exhaust springs. It makes the joint air tight and stays flexible. It keeps the
parts from grinding together too.

Hi Leonard. Thanks for the information on the tube gear. I
use it and like it just fine and will be careful to inspect it under
the bungies.
Would you please put your full name, approximate location,
aircraft and engine type, and build / flying status in your
signature? Mike and I are trying to make the place a little more
friendly and the information helps people get to know each other a
little better.

All,
I'd like to add information on how to set up email
signatures to the Matronics Wiki. I use Eudora and can cover that
program. I'd like a brief write-up on how to create, enable, and use
signatures in
Microsoft Outlook
Netscape
And any other email program you guys are using. (Mac too,
since I don't know that end.) Some of you may be able to just
"borrow" the information from the help files and send it to me.
Thanks,

Hi Scott,
What sealant are you using? I didn't think any of them were
good to 1200F. Then again, maybe I don't need 1200F protection there.

here it is:
ULTRA COPPER Hi-Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker
PERMATEX 81878
Temperature range -75F to 700F intermittent; resists auto and shop fluids and vibration.
Suggested Applications:
Exhaust manifolds/headers, valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, water pumps,
thermostat housings
I know it says 700F but it works fine. I've been doing this for many years and
probably 350 hours.

I use a muffler cement to help slide my Jabiru's exhaust pipes into
the muffler. It acts like a lubricant, then when dried, as a sealer.
These are straight pipes into straight pipe stubs in the muffler. The
stuff I got from Performance Automotive is made by Yale Automotive in
Hampshire, Illinois. 847-683-3388 (this info from the tube)

Guy,
In Microsoft Outlook first open up an untitled message then click on
Tools and Options. Under the General Tab click the e-mail option button and
there you can create an auto signature. Make sure to configure it for
replies and forwards. Then click OK. Your good to go.

Guy and All,
I found a lot of email help at About.com specifically:
http://email.about.com/od/signatures/Email_Signatures.htm
(I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird)
Everyone,
I decided to send this to the list instead of just Guy as there's lots
of other help there.

I used to use furnace cement, looks the same, smells the same and gets just
as hard but is a lot cheaper. Sorry guys there seems to be a theme emerging
to my latest posts. I used the furnace cement when I was a poor student.
Still poor, just temporarily gave up the study thingy.
The thing is both the muffler cement and the furnace first cousin get very
hard and won't allow any flex in the joints.... You may as well just weld
the parts together.
Packing the joints the hi-temp RTV or "Modified Oakum" Glass or asbestos
chord will allow the joints to flex as they have to. I was just thinking,
if you gave the inside of the elbow/pipes a thin coat of muffler cement it
could act the same as ceramic shielding on the inside of the pipes and
actually keep heat away from various parts.

Thanks Rex. (I'm going to call you Rex since I can't bring myself to
call you Rexinator.) I found the About site on Google but somehow
entered further down the tree. This page looks quite complete. I'll
see what I can do with it.
PS Any chance you'd like to add to your signature? I'd love to at

My point exactly ... I have four signatures loaded into Outlook and it's
getting to be a bit of a chore to copy a correspondence, close the message,
reset the signature open a new message and paste the correspondence or
delete and retype a suitable signature. I think we should soon return to
status quo with the occasional contact info.

Subject: | Re: Irons for covering |
Hello Barry, and all,
I, like all of us that spent hours calibrating our Irons,
Manacote irons too, till they were
as good as we could get them. I was ready to start covering, and I
chose the wing to be first.
after I had it covered, it sure looked wrinkled, I called a friend who
had his Kitfox covered, painted,
and ready to fly, and told him,I think I messed up my wing cause it was
so wrinkled. He drove almost
a hundred miles to come and help, he said the wing was covered just
fine. I gave him my calibrated
iron to use, he said I brought my own and do it by feel. His Iron was
not calibrated and he done a
great job, and that was six years ago this month that I have been flying
my IV 1200. Incidently,
while my friend was here that day, he covered both sides of the
fuselage, the verticle stabilizer, and the
bottom, and had it heat shrunk before he went back home, with an
uncalibrated iron.
I finished the covering, had help on the other wing, but done
the rest myself, did I use my calibrated
iron ? you bet I did. This guy just knew exactly how to use that Iron,
He had lots of experiance !!!!!

OK, I have to throw this in. I drilled a hole in the small iron that
receives a precision laboratory thermometer with a dial indicator.
The
hole is more than an inch deep. This way, I have a constant reading
of the
temperature. I believe this could be done with the household iron.
Based
on my experience, most of these thermostats are terribly inaccurate
and
inconsistent. I tried several before finding one that is nearly
consistent.
It is a Sunbeam. I calibrated it by the Polyfiber instructions.
N880BW has been flying for 6 years now and has 500 hours on it and the
fabric is holding up well.
