Steven, The Kitfox 5's do not qualify for sport pilot. The original ones gross weight was 1400, then later went to 1550, mine is 1500. Only the 4's will meet the gross weight limits. Sorry, LeRoy Kitfox 5 594JD

Steven, I live in Cameron Park and have a Model IV. I'd be glad to take you up for a Kitfox ride if a Model IV with tail wheel would give you what you want, or maybe just for fun. I am not aware of any Vixen's close by, but there is one in the Bay area. I host a Kitfox fly-in on the 9th of June this year. Come by and I am sure there will be some here. Glenn, I believe the first Kitfox to receive the 912 was a model II. But I believe the III was then developed to handle the additional weight better of the 912 four stroke. I think there is a magazine article from way back when describing all that. Charlie, That model III with a hundred horse 912 must be a real screamer? Tell us more about it...empty weight, climb rates, takeoff distances, speeds, etc. I'm sure the group would enjoy hearing about it. Oh yeah, also what kind of prop? I was a tech counselor on a Vixon. The short wing version was rated at 1200 lb and the long wing was 1400 lbs. That was using the 80 HP 912ULS. Also fly a Model IV out of San Carlos, Half Moon Bay. LeRoy, Not going to get into a long list discussion on this as it has been beat around pretty hard.. That is not a completely correct statement. What if on floats ?? What if it is not certificated yet ? Is it a short wing or long wing ? Fly Safe !! John & Debra McBean 208.337.5111 www.kitfoxaircraft.com "It's not how Fast... Steven I own a Kitfox Vixen with a 912 UL that is registered at 1320#. If you find a almost completed kit you can set the gross weight to 1320# and it will qualify for the LSA. Mal are you sure the tube is stainless? it may be chrome plated copper tube soldered not welded into the cap. I bought a regular cap last year removed all the plastic stuff and the sealing gasket inside, drilled a hole in it and soldered in a chrome plated copper tube normally used as a toilet feed stem. when I was finished I cut the tube to length and bent it forward into the airflow. Of course I re installed the gasket. Just a guess but I'd consider taking the hinge apart (remove the pin), lubricate or soap the inside of the hinge and then paint it separately. When the paint is dry it should be easy to remove from the lubricated surfaces yet should hold to the untreated surfaces. Then re-assemble the hinge. I have seen helicopters used in wildlife counting, where they actually paint caribou, pre sprayed with WD40 before each flight so the overspray is easy to wipe off. Given enough warm water the WD40 disappears too.
