I have just finished making nad installing a custom mount for a pitot/static tube
(Spruce) for my mode 4 thanks to Lynn Matteson for his help and info. Know
the problem, the original tube has you drill a 17/64 hole in the spar at a 90
degree piont to install the line that goes to the cockpit. My pitot/static tube
needs two lines.A construction manual I have says there is no tress on holes
at a 90 degree piont to the vertical,so can I elongate the and run both lines
thru, or should I drill two separate holes X distance apart.----Leon Morris/Classic

I've experienced the same missing when flying on a hot day.
I have a choke lever in the cockpit. When it was missing, I
added a little choke and the missing got worse. The engine
was running a bit too rich. The missing is not present when
I fly on cool mornings.
I could lower both carb needles a notch but decided to leave
things as they were...

Hi Leon,
I didn't even drill the one hole. I ran the line over
to the back side of the spar and made a seperate entry
into the cockpit behind the spar. Watch how you bend
the line though for wing folding. And you need the
line to go over the spar near a rib or it will have
fabric stuck to it when you cover the wing. The
fabric dips between ribs a good bit and almost lays on
the spar.
If you go with the spar hole, yes, the least stress is
at the 90 degree point, so that is where they made the
hole. It should be a very smooth hole too, or you add
stress risers, places where it likes to crack, just
like doing a windscreen.
If you make 2 holes too close together, it is possible
for a crack to form between them. A single hole along
the length, but no greater along the diameter of the
spar, is better. If you go with 2 holes, make them
more than tripple the spar diameter apart. I would
tripple the diameter because stress tends to run at a
45 degree angle. That is 1.414 times the diameter. 2
holes x 1.414 = 2.828 diameters. I rounded to 3 or
greater for safety.
To me, this is a place where the pitot and static
lines can chafe thru over time. You don't need any
additional reasons to recover a wing between the
lifetime of the fabric. And then there are those
rivet heads inside the spar to rub on too.
Did anyone else use any antichafe system on these
lines?

Hi Leon,
Yes, I recommend tying the tubes to the spar with
stitching line. I used nylon ties, but understand
that they deteriorate faster than the stitching line.
Tie the tubes well well so they don't wiggle loose
over the years and start flopping in your wing.
Then I drilled a hole in the web of #1 rib close
behind the spar, but out of the epoxy. You need to
look closely at the wing when folded to pick a good
spot for it to line up with your entry point to the
fuselage. Then you also need to add a small plywood
support to the inside of that last rib flush with the
cap strip edges, or the fabric covering the rib will
be pulled and torn by the line as you fold and spread.
You need to leave some slack not tied off so that the
line can move in and out of the wing a few inches as
you fold and spread, since the tube is not on the
hinge line.
I wonder now if you could mount the pitot/static tubes
out near the tip and run the tubes in thru the end of
the spar instead of drilling? It would still be a
good idea to run them thru a protective thin walled
tubing along with your wires to your lights so noting
wears on the spar rivets, etc.
Just an alternate idea....

Don, my engine is a 503 Rotax but has the same carbs as yours. When I
reduce throttle to the mid range the needle controls the mixture. I have
the arctic sparrow adjustable needles and richen a turn or two to keep the
EGT's down when I descend with the throttle in the mid range. When it
starts to get a little too rich the engine "ticks" (four strokes).
It took me a while to figure out what was causing this sound. It could be a
rich mid range (needle adjustment) in his carbs???

Subject: | Re: Tailwheel spring |
Leon,
My 1993 Model IV kit came with the single leaf spring. As you, concerned
with all the talk about tail wheel springs, I switched to the two leaf
spring. I don't recall when, but suppose it was while building as it is
painted white and nicely trimmed. I just came back from a trip to the Brian
Ranch ultralight fly-in near Apple Valley, CA, landing on lots of dirt and
have had lots of off pavement landings in my 870 hours. My worst landing
this trip was at Cameron Park, my home airport in calm wind. To my friends
that were following me, I blamed it on the lack of cross winds which we
found all over the Southern California desert. Actually, I thought I felt a
tug on the rudder a couple of times like a stiff pivot so put it on a block
to grease the tailwheel pivot and the leaf springs looked just like the day
I put them on - the bottom (main) spring opened a gap between it and the
second spring - showing no distortion of either spring element. Because of
all the talk, I examine them pretty carefully from time to time checking
for what might appear as hairline cracking - nothing.
This is one case. I know there have been broken springs, but the two leaf
set-up is not necessarily a problem. That said, I suppose since the springs
are heat treated after forming, likely in a local shop with who knows what
type of quality control, it is possible that there are some variables from
spring to spring.

This isn't necessarily a sound. It isn't necessarily a feeling. Have you
ever gone down the highway in you car and have the engine miss? It's all a
bit of a sound, jerk, feeling, noise????. In other words, how on earth do
you describe an engine miss????

I thought I had read something some where about NOT testing spark on your
plugs by pulling the plug and testing it by laying it on the side of the
frame.( like on a mower or dirt bike). I think that fries the Ign box?
Just a thought, to be careful.
