I see. I may be late figuring out what everyone else already has,
but.. It must be that the carbs are cold due to lots of gasoline being
evaporated. This is how icing is caused. And another symptom of "way
too rich"!
Can you report back when fixed? I am looking forward to hearing that
your engine is running great again.

I don't understand what you mean by carburetor temperature. Where
do you measure it?
I like Rick's suggestion. It maybe that one float valve was better
able to contain the pressure than the other when there seemed to be a
difference from one side to the other.

Subject: Kitfox-List:
Engine Running Rough
In January, 2007 my Kitfox IV with a 912 S engine threw all three
blades of my GSC propeller. There was one big "bump," the engine
stopped and I landed without incidence. Observation of the engine
revealed that both carburetors came off and the engine mount was
damaged. I sent the gearbox to Lockwood and performed a runout test on
the crankshaft with no damage either indicated. After installing a new
propeller and engine mount, the engine ran fine for about 12 hours of
local flights.
Then, Saturday before last, June 16, during a Young Eagles rally,
the engine started running rough. It would idle smooth but became very
rough at about 3000 rpm. I suspected a kinked fuel line, removed the
fire shield, saw nothing, and replaced it. Then it ran smooth and I
flew it a few times with no problem. The next day I flew it about an
hour with no problem. Last Friday, June 22, I started it and it was
rough again at about 3000 rpm - I mean really rough and would not run at
a higher rpm. In both of these situations the right carburetor was
considerably cooler than the left.
At this point, I thought it appropriate to run a compression check
but when I removed the first spark plug I saw it was heavily coated with
soot. I removed all the plugs and they all were the same way. Then I
opened both carburetors, top and bottom, but could see nothing that
would cause the mixture to be rich. These plugs only had about 25 hours
on them. I installed a set of old but clean plugs and put the
carburetors back together, started the engine and this time it went to
about 4000 rpm before cutting out and running rough. Now the
carburetors are both about the same temperature. I removed the top
plugs and the ones on the left side were clean and the ones on the right
side were covered with soot.
What to do? I tend to believe the shock of losing the propeller
blades caused some kind of problem with the carburetors.

Bob,
I thought I would add that if you have the plastic line for the brakes, there is
enough, provided you have the gundrilled Grove. Meaning you just cut the line
where you need to and connect, just go down to the auto parts store and grab
some new inserts for the end of the hose.

Have you checked Rotax SB 912-053? A group of fuel pumps is suspected of delivering
excess fuel pressure which can cause rich conditions and rough running.

Greetings Kitfoxers,
If you are planning to be at NWEAA Arlington this year be sure to visit the Seaplane
Base at Lake Goodwin Resort, about 7 miles west of the airport. A shuttle
will be running between the main gate at Arlington and the seaplane base Friday
thru Sunday. A Bratwurst dinner will be held at the lake on Friday 6:30pm.
A limited number of tickets are available through NWEAA for $7.50 per person.

Well if anyone is interested there is also a yellow balance mark on most tubes.
This wasn't mentioned in my Sky^%$# instructions. In any case
yellow marks were 80 off on my tubes from stems and red tire marks.
Maybe everyone knew this but me. To Kitfoxmike, it's funny that when
I got home and read your suggestion about spinning the wheels with a
grinder, that's exactly what I had done that day. Works great!

Not a problem. I get to change my tires and I'm taking the rims to the tire place
and let them do it, I'm going to let them balance as well. I think since
I'm going with the king fox tires that I might have troubles after they brake
in,so to speak, they generally puff out a little more with use, then I'll probably
have to balance again with the grinder trick.

For those of you interested , Wag Aero sells the plans for the North-Aire floats
. These are made from aluminum and you do all the work cutting bending rivetting
. However mine are made from a plug modeled from the North-aire plans. Glass
and vacumn bagged . There were 4 sets of these floats made from glass . They
have flown for hundreads hours on several different aircraft . They are very
light and tough .
Any ?'s

Subject: | EGT mal function |
Hi everybody,
I'm new to this list and I already have a question for my Kitfox Classic III.
I just bought my Kitfox but have a problem with the EGT gauge. I - well - my
kitfox has the Rotax 582 engine. The EGT indicates the temperature of 1 cylinder,
not the second. In flight, the reading of the first cylinder also stops,
having no egt readings at all.
As I looked in the engine compartment, I see that the EGT probes are well connected
to the cylinder but both lines that are made of metal touch each other
while between de engine and the instrument.
Do I have to put some tape around them to avoid contact ?
How did you guys solve this problem.
Greetz,

Hello Michel,
Well, I think we have a problem here :-) My name is also Michel and I
am also from Belgium, although I have been living 30 years in Norway.I
also have a Kitfox III which also had a 582 but now changed for a
Jabiru 2200. Incidentally, I think the Kitfox Classic is the model IV
and not III.
> Do I have to put some tape around them to avoid contact ?
Well, since the EGTs are thermo-couplers and measure a variation in
electrical resistance, it is certainly not good to have them shortcut.
But I fail to understand why this would show one working correctly and
the other showing nothing. Another thing is that the EGT probes have to
be connected to the exhaust manifold (hence the name) and not the
cylinders but I guess that's what you meant.
By the way, do you fly a Kitfox in Belgium? Under the experimental or
the UL rule? The reason I ask is that I know there are no Kitfox
registered in Belgium under the UL rule. You might be the first. I
always wondered why. Norway that has half the population of Belgium has
about six Kitfoxes in flying condition.
Greetings from Norway where the summer isn't much better either,
Michel Verheughe

Mine did the same thing . Changed the thermocouples and fixed the problem . It
does not matter if the two wires are run touching together back to the instrument
just make shure you have a good gromett through the firewall to keep them
from rubbing and shorting out . Do you have the old style clamp-on, or the new
thread in thermocouples?
Good luck hope you get it fixed soon

The thermocouples probably connect to an "extention cord" to reach the
instrument. Eight connections there all togeather, any one or more of
witch could be somewhat corroded. Also you might try to switch the
thermocouples around to determine if one half of the gauge is shot. Jim
